  • Each pannier has its purpose. Know what kind of riding you wane to do and what you need to carry. If you are getting into this for the first time, it is likely you will get both styles in time for different reasons.

I showed up in camp loaded up all crazy like that, and they started calling me Jed…for Jed Clampett, of the Beverly Hillbillies (loaded their truck that way). Just sayin’. Now my KLR rolls smooth and clean. I have the adventure model, and love my Kawie hard cases. Still dig the nickname, though.

I have covered over 30K miles on a Gen 1 and most those miles I was loaded like this of more to include a round trip on Route 66 and the Mojave BDR. Never had an issue, never bothered me. I trim down some items but people are very quick to say something about my load, but guess who they come to when they forget something or need a repair. I prefer solo trips, but next time someone needs something after saying how light they can travel I will tell them "Too Bad, carry it with you next time". But seriously, I have done all my long trips (4-20 days) on my own with all my crap and I love every minute of it.

My biggest fear with hard panniers is, that in case I drop the bike, the whole wight of it will crush panniers. While soft ones will survive.
Though I don't know about leg protection by hard or soft ones. I'm NOT driving off-road, just talking about parking tip over or something at slow speed.

I have a set of both and have dropped the bike on amd off road at slow speeds. Each has its purpose. Hard ones make it a bit easier to pick up the bike because it keeps the bike a bit off the ground. I am running soft ones more often because they have better cargo options. I'd say soft is safer and hard are more convenient.

Consider that if you go down on hard luggage there is a significant chance the hard case can pin, pull or crush your leg and cause significant damage-

I mentioned that briefly regarding my friends BMW GS. This is a preference and purpose for everything and everyone. I have both and use them for the type of riding I'm doing. Soft is my "Go To" unless I just riding local

I use soft on my ADV and leather on my bonneville (which is rigid for shape but soft for the fall and looks classy)
