I am running an older block with Vortec heads and from what I read is that electric water pumps work great with this. You can run a secondary water line from the water pump to the front of the intake. It solves the coolant issues with the vortec heads on a older 2 main block.
Hopefully Y’all had a Good Thanksgiving, I sure do appreciate you taking the Time to get these Vidja’s out to us. Been Looking Forward to this One and Getting Wrapped Up under the Power Barn.
Good call on not using steel shim head gaskets on a block that hasn't been decked. Especially when you are installing heads that have had a shop butcher the "resurface" job 👍🏻
I have a 95 K2500 with the 5.7 TBI . At 188,000 it needed a valve job. I pulled the heads and sent them off to my local machine shop to be checked for cracks and have a complete valve job on them. Meanwhile back at my shop I figured I was so close to the bottom end of the engine that I’d go on and do a full rebuild on the shortblock. The truck is mint and definitely worth it. After finishing the rebuild it ran great for about six months and began drinking coolant. It sucked so much down so fast while I was on a trip with it that coolant was getting in the oil and it beat the bearings out of it before I got it home. The heads on the TBI and later Vortec 5.7s were garbage. Extremely thin and subject to casting shift. I’ve seen them crack between the valves many times but the passenger side head on mine cracked under the valve cover next to a head bolt boss which is why it never skipped or ran bad. It was just dumping the coolant into the oil drain passage of the head and down into the crankcase. After sourcing two core heads at a salvage yard and going through the engine again it’s been fine for the last four years.
You should have been a teacher you’re absolutely one of the best that I’ve seen I’m working on one right now . I’ve learned a lot even though I’ve been doing it for years. Thank you.
Woo hoo!!! What could be better than a new video from Mr Chad after a wonderful Thanksgiving! Hope y'all all had a great day yesterday with your families! 💙🙏🏼
I would not tighten the timing chain cover until the harmonic balancer was installed on the crank snout. Gives a better chance of the crank seal to adjust to the correct position on the crank snout. Just saying.
I have converted a couple of these trucks to carburetors. I have had luck with not running a fuel pressure regulator and just put a "T" fitting and there happens to be right around 5psi and it seems to work fine. Fuel feed in the right side. out to the carb from the left side and return line out the bottom of the "T". Cheaper than any regular. Also a 230/234 cam in a 350 probably wants a 2,500 - 3,000 stall to do a burnout. I really enjoyed this series. Having done this myself, I can appreciate the work you put into it. You might also try a lower power valve. Measure the idle vacuum and divide by 2 to get your size. Chances are it's open at idle and causing it to load up and be lazy off idle.
If you’re worried about the fuel pump dead ending, you could install a needle valve bypass and just crack it open to keep fuel moving through the pump. The pump should easily overcome the bleed to keep pressure at the carb and the moving fuel will keep the pump cool. It’s not a terribly accurate solution, but I would think better than nothing.
In my experience I’ve always eliminated the vacuum advance hose on a motor with a healthy cam! Just work at getting your total timing with mechanical advance and try that! You also may have to re jet the carb and possibly change the power valve!
Excellent video Chad :) also don't for get on back fire wall ground with connector had do before distributor too after also and fire not bother my video sound you talk or anything to! I always spend time on motors, especially when a cam is put in.. I think carbs really need to be paired with exactly the motor you're running, sizing the jets is super important. She sounds great though, I bet another week of fooling with it she'll be right where you want her, until it's time to upgrade again!! Thanks for the video, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your family (and or friends). We did here!
Thank you again Chad for that drive - it's like going down memory lane driving the back roads of my home town back east in very rural farm country. Just beautiful especially this time of year.
May have told you but I had a 1978 big bronco and 89,000 it started blowing oil out both tailpipes all over my camper that I was pulling. Ran a compression check and it was good so I wound up installing new valve guide seals and it was still blowing oil. I had a friend that owned a shop and he ordered me a new reman long block cause deer hunting season was the next week. So I pulled the block and started transferring accessories and intake and holley 650 over on the stand. Turns out the edelbrock intake that was on the old engine had a whole right below where the power valve was on the holley and I remembered it having backfired when I was pulling the travel trailer through the mountains. The whole was about the size of a quarter and it was sucking it right through the intake. Edelbrock gave me a new intake under warranty and i went ahead and installed the new engine. Made it to deer camp that night and drove to 1985 when we got a new van for the Kids and wife. 21 years (1996) later my son and I were in texas and saw it sitting on a used car lot. My son wanted so I bought it back and towed it home to north oklahoma. He drove it till the engine wore out and I pulled the 400 engine out of the truck I that I told you about having the rocks in the carburastor. Thats what you do with old trucks.

Hey Chad... you've got to release a DVD with your video out-takes. You know the ones, where you throw a tool into the woods or take 30 minutes to cuss something out. We could all use a good laugh. I appreciate your sense of humor when things are looking futile. Oh and uh - by the way, as with the beginning of your videos where you say you are "stupid"... brother, you possess a wealth of knowledge far exceeding that of the Library of Congress; and not just that but a good sense of how to use it too. A good month "holding the light" for ya would do most of us a whole lot of good in the learnin'. Thanks again for a great video.

Augh-- Ya... 🔧🛠 👨🔧🧰 It just wouldn't be a "This N That Garage" video without a few misfortunes but don't fret, once again our mechanical messiah shines like a diamond when it's all said and done. Regarding background noise "FireDragon" etc, are probably louder for you than us the viewer. Those go-pro mic ports are fairly directional and as long as you don't have the port facing the noise it seems to do a good job of filtering a good percentage of it. Funny thing with those dis-tib-u-tars, sometimes you have to growl and bite the vent tube of the carbur-auster before they'll drop in. Superb sunset finish- line. "Augh-Ya" Thanks for the content !
Sounds pretty good. Couple things, your right in that once upgraded to the higher lift cam, you'll probably need to run high octane fuel to tame the ping. As well, since the larger cam has less vacuum, you'll probably want to swap out the power valve which comes in with an extra shot of fuel when vacuum drops under wot. And the stumble off idle can be helped not only by up sizing the squitter tubes but get yourself a holley cam kit which allows one to adjust how quickly the shot comes in off idle (can also upgrade the pump shot to 50cc from standard 30). Oh and please use the manifold vacuum port for dizzy and not ported as it's only used for lower emissions and fuel saving by retarding at idle unlike manifold vacuum which is always "on". Good luck and good job! Happy thanksgiving! P.s your close enough to me you could have borrowed my aluminum holley brawler 670 which sounds like exactly what you need!
My truck done the same thing.I fixed it by using a bypass regulator and sending some fuel back to the tank via the return.without a return it's pushing the needle valve open and loading up.especially when it warms up.

Glad it's up and running! Fun fact: a mechanical fuel pump will pull through an in-tank electric pump. I did a 4.3L to 350 swap on an '87 TBI and it's pulls good and doesn't starve for fuel. I ordered a pump for an '86 with a return line fitting on it

Vacuum secondary is the way to go with this, but definitely still want 2 metering blocks for a little performance action
