I've entered my guitar journey 2 months ago. I have watched many videos, I admit I learned something. BUT YOU in 2 weeks have tought me SO MUCH MORE! Your personality, mood, good cheer, just make one want to love music more! I have a practice routine, I keep a time slot for noodling, jamming to a backing track, and just plain old learning. I see you have been at this for a chunk of your life, and I must say Mr. Justin, what a great service to the world you give. God Bless You!
Justin is the best. For an alternative view (and some different lessons ) check out Marty Music. He's different, of course but good. He also brings in his teacher for some lessons. No disrespect to Justin, just more knowledge is better, no?
Great lesson. On the start of the main riff, I think Jimmy does a very slight bend on the 5th string and 5th fret (D note) and plays together with and open D (4th) string. It gives the D note a slight dissonance to emphasize it.
The riffy part - you need to hit the D on the fifth string and the open D on the fourth string together or simultaneously. As you do that, you bend upward the D note on the fifth string (so the open D on the fourth string can ring out) and vibrato the D on the fifth string.
Best one I have heard yet. PDG. I found my own way of strumming the chord that sounds just as good with less hand movement. It's up and down and you select which notes to play. Also must use a little damping with your right hand on the bridge. You just play the individual notes kind of up and down. Hard to explain but it sounds really good. You can hear the picking direction when you listen carefully.
excellent but if you bend that first D a little and match it with the open D, it souns more like the led zep 2 version. it gives it that weir sound. love your sg sound
Justin, another great lesson! I’ve spent the past 3 days focused on this song and Hey Joe (another great lesson by you!). So much overlap but such different sounds. Thanks for breaking down this solo (as well as the one on Hey Joe). Always enjoy your lessons and your teaching style.
That “2nd part” is the difficult part so I’m glad you shared your version. I’ve had some other songs with difficult parts and I find that if I start and finish on the same notes and always hit those root notes, it’ll be ok.
You absolutely NAILED the tone for this one. It’s so iconic, yet so many people can’t get it right(and not a Vox solid state amp in sight). There’s all kinds of debate on what guitar and pick up is used but I think you have answered those questions:it was his Les Paul, on the bridge PU and reverb with a pre-delay.
Studio version sounds like bridge pickup..Live it's always Middle. There is footage of it on TSRTS and one sees Jimmy adjusting the Neck Vol control during the riff... Same with Rock and Roll live . Main body of song is middle position.
I like how you put the 1 or 2 rhythm punches on the low E & A strings, power chords, between the lead lick phrases. Haven’t seen that on any tutorials before. Okay so maybe they were overdubs by Jimmy, but they certainly effective here. You are not the average guy. I like that. Thanks for the great opening demo.
Great information and lesson! I’ve watched several lessons on this song but yours has been the most informative and enjoyable one yet. I just wish that I could play a fraction as well as you can but I am practicing every day and trying real hard.
Another great lesson from Justin. The amazing Joe walsh on his lesson Les paul set up. Explains how he finally worked out what jimi was playing on the intro to this song. On the A string 5th fret bend sharp and play the open D string at the same time to get that sound! followed with the E power chord.
I seen a video where joe walsh show'd how to push the a string 5th fret up a hair to allow a distant d note between it and the open d string on the main riff. Sounds gorgeous.
just have watched the first 5 minutes and have to say... that again this is a stellar lesson 👍 that the sound you have dialed in is perfect for this song imo 👍 ...ok I'll go on now with the lesson :)
Thank you for all you do Justin. I sit back and learn from you without saying anything. Absolutely not a better guy to learn from than you. Happy new Year to ya!

Thanks so much for this Mr. Justin S. To me, this is one of your best easy guitar lessons ever. It's so simple and easy to understand now, for me, the tone when you're playing this, just sounded like the original recording. I've tried other lessons here in RUclips but I didn't learn from them. And good thing, this was just recommended to me (by RUclips, of course) today. Happy New Year to you, and I wish you the best of lucks, as well... 😊
Yep, almost everyone I've watched misses it. Only a handful hear it and play it. Such a crucial element to get that huge sound of the riff as Jimmy intended
Hi Justin been watching you for about 3 years now, I really like your teaching style and have learned alot from you . I was wondering if you would consider doing some more Elliot Smith songs. I really liked your previous Elliot Smith lessons. Thanks for another great year of teaching guitar and giving people the gift of music!
dude ...that was bad ass.... u r da man! thanks justin....ur o.k. . Ill call Page for ya and see if the album is down strokes or alt. picking ...no worries mate.

Great lesson as always. I don't have an electric guitar, and not really a song I'm interested in learning, but I still love to watch all your videos. You make it look so easy, but I know that's just practice. Take care of yourself and your family Justin and have a Happy New Year. From Charlie in the States.
On the original recording the guitar tracks are obviously layered so you might hear 2 or more layers at anyone time not just one. On the Rock Band ogg multi track for example you have stems for main, solo and guitar overdubs which consists of mainly strange effects used underneath the main track. Its well known Pagie used both Les Paul and a Telecaster on recordings so you have more than one tone variation its not all one single guitar track this come over clear when you listen to the Rock Band ogg and the mixdowns (Various versions are out there I have 3 including one called showcase) more so than when you listen to the actual album ! I'm using Adams Studio Monitors and the multi track stems and various mixdowns sound incredible.

Started with Justin 2 years ago, can confirm!
Wish I had a teacher like him 30+ years ago, when I was stuck with piano in music school...
Thank you! Wishing you all the very best. Cheers.
Well said! 👍👍👍

It gives the D note a slight dissonance to emphasize it.
You’re absolutely right. In fact, I’d say that’s what makes the riff so special. Well done.
It may sound minor but you're so right, that little bend is so much of the feel of the riff.
You’re absolutely right,it’s subtle but it’s definitely there and things are never quite as simple as they first seem with Mr Page are they.
I came to the comment section to see if someone caught this. 90% don't plays this riff correct.
I really appreciate your thoughts throughout this lesson, please never feel like it's not appreciated. Great lesson, thanks so much for sharing.
Thing is when you go on talking you are giving a ton of knowledge, I really appreciate hearing the wisdom.
Great lesson. It was so inspiring that I couldn't resist, I had to grab my guitar and start playing/learning. Thanks Justin!!!
Amazing timing! Literally went looking for Whole Lotta Love lesson this morning, and this turns up on my RUclips feed!
I honestly just love the solo of Whole Lotta Love!
The riffy part - you need to hit the D on the fifth string and the open D on the fourth string together or simultaneously. As you do that, you bend upward the D note on the fifth string (so the open D on the fourth string can ring out) and vibrato the D on the fifth string.
what this guy said!
The Phil X tip
Agree
Exactly. This video is how not to play it.
Correct. Steve Stevens does a good demo of this and it makes all the difference
I'll start out with a thank you, and i'd like to add that your general aura in passing on the information is just enthusiastically spot on. Alex D
What a great guitar instructor!
thank you :)
thanks justin for your teaching style honest and very enjoyable
I love your channel. I owe most of what I learnt on guitar to you.

Hearing that solo played slowly sounds great in itself. Cheers Justin

Fantastic lesson

You are so wonderful for teaching us..
Intro was so fantastic that I had to watch whole lesson. Thanks.

Exactly! It’s the key ingredient that makes the riff so memorable.

When I was 15 this was the first song my Mom wanted me to learn. Decades later, perhaps I'll finally do it a small bit of justice. Thanks!!
