    Thank you so much for this video, my daughter has a tongue tie and I’ve been so stressed about it. Been referred to an ENT and a pediatric dentist, one uses the scalpel and the other uses a laser and I’ve been told from different LCs that the scalpel is better. This has caused me so much stress and anxiety over who to choose and what to do. I sincerely thank you for discussing the different techniques, hearing that the method doesn’t matter has greatly decreased my anxiety!

    Thanks! Very helpful video. Why do you think it is that this is becoming a more common procedure than say 30 or 40 years ago? Is it just that tongue and lip ties are more well understood than they used to be? Grandparents don't seem to understand our desire to do the procedure for our little one. 😕

    I got my tongue tie surgery yesterday, and was immediately able to stick my tongue out, lick my lips, etc.. i noticed when i got home it was harder and there’s a lot of swelling under my tongue and it became harder to move it. taking a closer look, it looks like the doctor only cut the thinner layer and left the thick layer of the frenulum. i think the doctor didn’t cut enough off, because there’s swelling around the frenulum which is restricting my tongue movement.. which looks like it could be a permanent issue. should i wait it out a few more days, or call the doctor ASAP?

    • @GeneLiuMD
      @GeneLiuMD  5 лет назад +3

      What happened? How much to cut is really an art, not a science. If you were able to move the tongue enough immediately, they likely cut "enough". Swelling and muscle soreness absolutely kick in after the procedure for a few days.

    My 6 month old has tongue tie and the emt recommended I should wait until she is 3 or 4 yrs old to go under anesthesia b/c he said it is going to hurt a lot now and he might cut something else because she moves a lot now. I dont feel right about it. I do want to get done and I didnt have it done before b/c her ped said she was too young to do it. I do want it done on her to prevent any future problems specially when she starts speaking. What do you recommend?

    • @GeneLiuMD
      @GeneLiuMD  6 лет назад +3

      The issue with waiting until 3-4 y/o is that they almost never cooperate at that age and either (1) you strap them down screaming...which would be even worse from a flailing around and PTSD standpoint or (2) sedate them. And they typically would take longer to "figure out" how to move their tongue more and take advantage of the release.
      I personally find it very easy to perform the procedure in the office up to at least 9-12 months of age. Starting around 6 months of age, it's not unusual for a child to need tylenol and/or ibuprofen afterwards. Obviously, every physician has their own preferences or comfort level. If you don't like or agree with the first recommendation, I would consider a second opinion with someone in your area that might consider it at an earlier age.

In fact, my speech clinic doesn't provide referrals for this procedure because of the high probability of re-attaching and no proven changes in expressive language abilities. I stand by anyone who chooses to do it and anyone who chooses not to. Go with your gut.

      It does not change the size of the tongue (including the length) in any way. It does potentially increase the range of motion, though.

    Hi there!! What is posterior tongue tie ... my baby has hard time in feeding. Im very much confused .. i have consulted lactation consultant and pediatric surgeon for tongue tie .. still breast feeding hurts.. surgeon said baby has no tongue tie but lactation consultant says baby has tongue tie. .

      The "classic" tongue tie is where the band attaches very close to the tip of the tongue. If the attachment is not that close to the tip of the tongue, but the little band is still short enough, it can limit the tongue range of motion...even when it's nowhere near the tip.

      Thanks for the reply gene .. DS is able to lift his tongue .. i feel lk the tongue length is short.. when he open up his mouth.. the tongue is not not reaching out .. we can see his gums .. how we can rectify this issue..?? My surgeon denied it is not tongue tie..
