The closest comparison to Ant is Dwyane Wade. Wade won a championship in his 3rd season at the age of 24. In his 2nd season, at 23, he was on the all NBA 2nd team, and All Defensive 2nd team. These same journalists used to say that Wade was the 3rd best shooting guard of all time after Jordan and Kobe. I'm not ready to put Ant ahead of Wade. Young Wade was a beast. People have short memories.
That said, Ant's game shows how much the game has evolved. He's way ahead in 3pt shooting which will help lengthen his career. Wade never mastered the 3, but it was also not necessary in his era. Now, with advanced stats driving shot selection and efficiency, it's necessary. Ant also started younger. He's on track to pass Dywane in counting stat totals if he stays healthy and motivated, but people forget that Wade won a chip in his 3rd season and was one of the best players in the game by his second year.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 Месяц назад

Yup, his game most resembles Wade, except for the 3s. And Wade had the Euro-step, something I don't think I've seen from Ant yet. Wade was a beast.

    • @johnbarkley925

I love Ant but besides 3 point shooting he is way behind Jordan at everything.
Scoring, rebounding, passing, perimeter defense, shotblocking, clutchness, 3 point shooting, attacking the rim.
Ant would be an 8/10 at best in some of these categories while MJ would be a 10/10.
The gap is pretty big if you ask me.

Ant has better size than Wade so he can to his spots at will. Wade fell off every year after that title because of his style of play leading to injuries. Splitting defenders and rising up over the big man is a crazy style of play to keep up for years. Dude was fearless.

As a long time MJ fan and new Ant watcher I can see the similarities. Ant is a touch shorter and bit heavier than young MJ was and MJ was a smoother moving athlete but otherwise the similarities are apparent. It's a bit early at this point to say - but watch out for Anthony Edwards in the All-Time Great Debate in 10 years. He is very similar to MJ athletically, explosively, in the way he plays, and in attitude and agression on both ends of the court.

@@rayleigh8 Upper 50s and have been a Jordan fan since January 1984. What differences do you see in the way they play the game? Kobe looked more like MJ just not as athletic. MJ was in attack mode more often than Ant. But when Ant is in attack mode he seems impossible to stop like MJ - although Ant doesn't have to deal with hand checking or defenses focused on stopping just him as much. And he has way more floor space to work with than players had in the 80s and 90s. Ant can score from anywhere on the court like MJ. MJ was smoother and seemed like he could levitate. MJ's hands allowed him to manipulate the ball in mid-air like no one else could. But they are both great athletes. To be honest I have only started to pay attention to Ant after all the MJ comparison talk started and he has had some pretty remarkable games since then.

@@benjaminsmith2287 According to Pat Riley there were similarities to the way Wade and MJ played the game - “He (Wade) had a game similar to Michael,” Riley said on a conference call earlier this week. “He was like a cat. He was like a cougar when he put the ball on the floor, and he started going to the hoop. And we used to watch it on tape all the time, we used to say look at how low he is to the ground. And he still has the strength and the power to go right or left spin and dunk the ball or little floaters and stuff. That’s Michael.” And “If you watched him stand and cross his legs and put his hands on his hips, it was like how Jordan would rest during free throws,” Riley said. “He had a game similar to Michael. @@user-xy8ep2qk7v With all due respect to Riley, yeah MJ and Wade were tenacious players. And both had mid-range jump shots and great D. But there were big difference. Their height and build were different. MJ had that hold the ball with one hand thing that only a few players with huge hands have. DWade had the Eurostep, something I didn't see MJ do. And I think Wade utilized the crossover more. I see quite different players, styles. The closest to MJ in style was Kobe be he too didn't have the hold the hand with one hand and I think Kobe was a better 3 point shooter. Ant is very similar to MJ in many ways plus he has the advantage of playing in the MODERN NBA where he benefits greatly from the floor spacing, no hand checking, and "modern" officiating. It is nearly impossible to defend him one-on-one without being able to HAND CHECK him and there is SO MUCH ROOM for him to operate on the floor and when he gets into the paint.

With hand checking he might actually be better defensively and in return be even better offensively because he's bigger and stronger than most 2s. He's got Zion power in a 2 guard body without the injury issues. Those other smaller shooting guards benefit more than he does. He doesn't get the calls because he's so much stronger. Just like that dunk in Phoenix, gets hit in the head and no foul. Happens all the time because refs don't like giving him the whistle because he's defying what that position is supposed to play like.

Ant and Kobe were on winning teams by year 4 or earlier because they each played with multiple All-Stars and All-NBA players throughout their first 4 years. MJ didn't play with an All-Star until his 6th year when Pippen became an All-Star in 1990 or an All-NBA player for 8 years when Pippen was named to the All-NBA 2nd team in 1992.

@nydibs: While that’s true it wasn’t because of a lack of talent, they just couldn’t put it together. Wolves for whatever reason seem disjointed & lackadaisical, Ant & Jaden McDaniels were drafted the same year & marked a new era for them add Gobert & Conley their defense & veteran presence skyrocketed, Ant as young as he is a leader. GM Tim Connelly knows what he’s doing

The difference between SGA & Tatum atleast is that SGA was traded from his original team & asked to be incredibly patient with OKC as they built up what there current team is. SGA is young because 27 is considered the start of your prime, Luka was just dominant out of the gate so he’s got that Lebron like effect & Tatum was too but also had a great team around him. Ant just happens to be really young lol

Jordan did it with a smile, too--in his younger years when they were getting bounced out of the playoffs. In order for the Bulls to get past the Pistons, MJ and the entire Bulls team had to toughen up. That's when he adopted the scowl. Rember Jordan trading blows with Laimbeer? That only came after he took his lumps for a couple of years. We shall see if Edwards makes that same progression.

Knicks are relying on one undersized guard.

What separated Jordan from Kobe was the efficiency. This can not be understated enough. Right now it's early but Edwards career efficiency is trending more Kobe and not Jordan. This is not a knock at all as most people consider Kobe the 2nd greatest two guard ever. If Anthony can continue work on his shot selection and play smarter, his efficiency should gradually go up. This can not be said enough. Efficiency is one of main reason why Kobe has 1 MVP and Jordan has 5. Look at all winners of multiple MVPs over the years and they were all efficient players for the most part.
