Night Scanning: the Tecsun PL-330 Radio on Shortwave

  • Winter evening in Ohio is a good time to scan the shortwave broadcast and HAM frequencies. Join me for a stroll up and down the finely tuned dial of my Tecsun PL-330 AM FM SW SSB receiver.
    Propagation conditions seem a bit more favorable tonight for teasing out the signals.
    We'll drop in for a bit to hear the Boys of Radio talking about: radio (in a segment I now realize I should have named--in the inspiration of the Coverdale Psalter--'Wonders in the Land of Ham').

    Central Ohio, I'm in Ohio as well. Bought an RTL-SDR v3 a few years ago, ever since I've been hooked. Bought an Eton Elite Executive, and an ATS-25, going to be getting a PL330 soon. Going to be upgrading from my RTL-SDR to an SDRPlay RSP1A. An MLA-30+ was a game changer for me (where I live I deal with two noise sources which makes using the telescopic troublesome).
    I mainly hunt around MW and SW for OTRs I know 740 and 900 airs them (and I think 680 does as well), and I know 6160 airs them (there's probably a few other SW stations that air OTRs).

    With your PL-330 on ETM mode, press and hold the "6" button. If your firmware supports this hidden feature you should see two digits appearing at the clock display. You can change this value from 00 to 04 by rotating the tuning knob. This adjusts the ETM scanning rate, with 00 being the fastest and 04 the slowest.
    The catch is that the faster the scanning speed, the fewer number of stations that the ETM system will register. The scan rate adjustment works on later firmware versions like 3305 and 3306 but may not work on earlier versions.

      @@josesebastian5986 I was hoping that owners of earlier versions of the PL-330, specifically the one with 550 memories instead of 850 can verify if their radios support these hidden features.
      Mine came with 3306 and there's also another undocumented function when I long press the "9" key. I'm not sure what it does but it might be an adjustable dynamic noise reduction feature or an electronic squelch.

    • @ma-mo
      @ma-mo  2 года назад +3

      Okay, I tried this ETM scan speed feature; my very early (3303) model apparently does not support this.

    • @StratmanII
      @StratmanII 2 года назад +5

      @@ma-mo Thanks for confirming this, sir. I don't think you purchased a prototype unit. It's just that the Tecsun engineers decided to add on a couple of undocumented features along the way as they refined the radio's firmware.
      You won't miss much by not having the ETM scanning rate adjustment. I usually leave my PL-330 on the slowest scan speed so that it registers more broadcasting frequencies.

      Apple iPhones and many high quality electronics are name in China. Most televisions, radios, phones, solar batteries - I could go on and on with examples.
      If you are inferring very low cost radio transceivers (HTs) such as the BAOFANGs ($25) as compared to Japanese HTs (>$150) I agree.
      The BAOFANG radios are not "bad", they are very popular based on the high number of units sold - you just get what you pay for.
      I own a PL-330 receiver and it's quality is VERY good. Also, the current US version of the PL-330 is priced around $70.
      I do not consider the PL-330 an "entry level" receiver based on the provided functionality - or its price.

      Interesting comment, I'm guessing you have never been to China. This misconception about cheap Chinese products is just that, a" misconception" the only reason the western world has this view on Chinese made products is because consumer demand on low cost items. Most of the top brands we know are either made in China or assembled or have parts made in china. Been to China a few times and Was a real eyeopener. Most of the products made in China for the Chinese market is not sold to the west. They have amazing quality. What stood out most to me was clothing and electronics in particular mobile phones. My wives brother for example has a Chinese mobile phone which cost three times the price of an iPhone and leaves our top phones for dead.
      Just saying.
      By the way I own a Sony icf-SW 55 which I love and is my favorite radio but I also have a Tecsun pl 660 and pl330 both of which receive just as well. True that the build quality on the Sony is far superior but you can't compare build quality if you don't compare price as well.
      Anyway just thought I'd share my two cents worth:)
