  • Today were are helping our friend Rich replace the gas struts on his RV awning. He was told by RV repair places and even the manufacturer that he needed to replace the whole arm. That is not the case and we will show you how to change them out yourself and save 400 bucks or more in this video.

    Very helpful video, thanks. We had situation where someone retracted the awning without releasing the ‘tilt adjustment’ knob. So the support arm snapped at the top. We got the support arm as a used part (was also told that we had to buy a complete arm assembly!). To replace the support arm we had to remove and reinstall the gas strut. This is where video was helpful.

    Great video. Another tip I learned along the way. When extending the awning out, stop when you have awning out just 12" to 15" out. Wait about 20 seconds then extend all the way out. This is better on the gas struts and last longer.

    Just what I needed. Tho I have a different model Carefree awning your video showed me how to get the strut back in. A slight brush against a street sign (my bad) knocked the awning top off. Some hex screws fix that but I could not get the twice as long gas strut back in. Way too strong to hold compressed. I'll give your fix a try.

    Nice video, thank you. I'm curious, it appears you never needed to remove the third pin during this procedure. Why was it necessary to remove the push nut for that pin?

  • @MYCHANNELWITHMYSTUFF
    @MYCHANNELWITHMYSTUFF Год назад +1

    You should be able to just unscrew the strut from the eyelet at each end of the strut without having to pull any pins or spacers.

      That was not an option as there was no way for it to come off. I have done that in the past on the gas struts for like an SUV rear hatch but not on these. Maybe because they have so much force.

    Could an old strut also cause the arm to be stuck in the "out" position? Our awning detached from the arm and we aren't able to lift it back up past a certain point (it's the arm without the drive shaft)

    • @Jimmy2Tech
      @Jimmy2Tech  2 года назад +1

      By the sounds of it an old strut could cause issues since struts can either leak and not hold weight, or they end up locking into place.

    how do you know what strut to buy?

    • @Jimmy2Tech
      @Jimmy2Tech  3 месяца назад

      There is usually a number on the old strut that you can use to search google.

    Can u use a regular bolt if the original bolt is un available ?

    • @Jimmy2Tech
      @Jimmy2Tech  2 года назад +1

      That should be fine. Just try ro match material so you have the same rigidity of the default bolt.

    Are the strut sizes different depending on the awning model?

    • @Jimmy2Tech

      They are different depending on your awning model so bet to get the number off your old one or measure your old one.

    Do you have to replace both struts when you only have one that’s bad?

    • @Jimmy2Tech
      @Jimmy2Tech  Год назад

      No, you can replace just one. But it is recommended to do both as one will have a strong force.

    how do I know which gaz strut to by?

    • @Jimmy2Tech
      @Jimmy2Tech  2 года назад +1

      Hello Marie- Reine,
      A lot of times the number is on the strut and you can look it up by that or cross reference the number. If it is not you can call the manufacturer and they can tell you what size you need. Also the website we got ours at www.liftsupportsdepot.com/ is a good resource to find your replacement. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

    How do I know when my tt struts need replacing

    • @Jimmy2Tech
      @Jimmy2Tech  Год назад +1

      You will see them start to leak fluid out or they will just not support your awning anymore and 1 or both sides will sag.

      @@Jimmy2Tech thank you! My awning problem went back to a bad motor. They don’t tell you that it gets so much condensation and water in them.

    WWWAAAAAYYYYYY too much work here, it takes two people ten minutes to change a strut and does not involve removing those pins and spacers.

      I'm not sure how you got that done, but i would love to see the video on how it is done. That strut holds some power.
