I feel exactly the same. Troy kind of touched on something that made me realize why I often feel so distant; he said that God will approach you (He has, many times) and He will base His closeness to you later on your reactions to his attempts to approach you in the present.
I probably didn’t explain that very well, but in simpler terms, God has asked me to do things for Him in the past and, for one reason or another, I haven’t responded to the requests. In most of those cases, I didn’t realize or recognize that the request was coming directly from God, but the fact that I rejected the requests (I think) had a big impact on my relationship with Him now.
I’m trying to change that now, but I know that I haven’t been the most obedient of servants, so I guess I can’t expect it to happen overnight.
Just don’t give up. Even if you don’t feel His presence, He’s still there with you and always will be.
I need prayer. I’m trying desperately to get off medication I know I don’t need. Please pray for me to be delivered. Please. I need God’s help.

Sit and praise the Lord. I put on worship music music very low. I either ask him a question I might have or something comes into my mind. Then with my notes app on God’s messages and the date entered, anything that comes into my mind I write down what comes into my mind and this is how I start my conversation with the Lord. It’s so easy. There is an excellent video on RUclips and the channel is House of Rest Church and it’s titled: learn 4 keys to hearing gods voice/Dr. Mark Virkler. He explained that for years he didn’t think he could hear from God and someone finally showed him that the voice was in his mind. I just recently found this and it has made a world of difference. Now I look forward to my prayer time and I always write down what comes into my mind and sometimes I reread it when the Lord puts that thought into my mind. Mark also answers the question, What if it’s not God’s voice.

I feel like we only see a portion of the lives of the people in the bible. Those were basically the things the Holy Spirit highlighted because it's not like God wants us to read the entire book of someone's life. I believe Moses also received just as much communication, but it's not not shown to us in the Bible. It's not good to compare with others. i've been learning that in this season and having an individual relationship with God is the most important. Troy's relationship with God and how he communicates with God will always be unique and different than other peoples because other people do get specific words like Troy. They are a blessing to us because they are being obedient to God. we can also be obedient to God and listen to what He asys and follow. For all of us God will give us all that opportunity, the deeper we get closer to Him and it will be in another way.. so we should be eager and waiting and listening so we can know what is going on in our own lives as well as globally. :)
