    I have absolutely no experience with model construction but saw some model sets in Walmart the other day and thought they looked cool. I also am dealing with depression and my girlfriend recommended finding a hobby and I decided that this would be something I would be interested in. I always liked legos so this is the next step up in my mind. I have always wanted to do models but never had the initiative until now. I will get back to you with how it goes.

      Plastic modeling is a great hobby. When I started off I got into 1:72 scale military subjects. I really enjoy modeling the M2 Bradley or the M113. I started off with the small scale stuff and then I started building car models. Like kits they sell at Walmart. Depending on where you live you can also attend local IPMS meetings. I live in the Southern California area so there are a couple of different modeling club meetings that I can attend. If you need help finding out more about modeling clubs then please let me know.

    Depends where you are coming from. Since I started with 28mm miniatures I find smaller scales easier to work with. For most others starting out I think 1/35 could be easier due to larger parts. The techniques are the same regardless of scale.

    Thanks for the video, I have had experience building gundam and other snap together models in the past but since want to move onto military vehicles. but making the jump to gluing, pudding, painting and the additional tools the model has always been an intimidating step for me. this helped sum it up a bit better. thanks for this video, it's a great help taking some of the scare away from that jump.

    My first kit I grabbed just a month ago was a Tamiya M48A3 Patton and while I think I did decent on first construction, I dont plan on touching paint just yet. Probably gonna pick up that same Emhar model when I do try painting lmak

  • @ThePaintingClinic
    @ThePaintingClinic  11 лет назад +2

    True. Destroy is just my choice of word since when I royally screwed something up that killed my interest in the kit and most of the time it ended up in the trash.

  • @spiteu9272
    @spiteu9272 3 года назад

    The "you are going to destroy your first few kits" statement is facts.
    When I started about 5-6 years ago, I did not have the skill to make things work. I would often put the model away and move onto another one.
    Knowing how to achieve what you want is the skill, knowing how to make things fit or to modify the kit is daunting but leads to some real progress.
    The biggest thing I learned and helped to finish more models; "Battle Damage" you can explain anything away as just battle damage.

    I’ve been watching a ton of modeling videos over the last 48 hours. I’m going to the hobby store today to get 1 or 2 1/72 and 1/48 Tamiya WWII warbirds. I’ll be painting with a brush, but I’m ready to go. The cementing part will be fine for me. It’s just the painting. I made the Tamiya R34 awhile back. I stopped because the painting pissed me off and took too long, but I used can, painting one thick coat, and didn’t wait long enough. Idk. Basically, I’m hoping it’ll go well.

    great info for the staring modeler, most of the stuff you said was spot on, a tip i've picked up is to glue parts from the inside of the model when possible, that way when its all assembled, the glue marks are hidden inside and you dont need to clean aything up, also tamiya extra thin is my go to as well, i used testors for quite a while, but compared to the tamiya stuff, its garbage

    I plan to use brushes. I like airbrushes. But I don't have the money and like you said in the video I am getting back into this hobby after being out of it for 17 years. The last models I painted were not good at all. Lost of too thick paint. A mini tiger tank painted yellow with black spots, a M48 patton painted green with yellow stripes. I used enamel paints back then. This time I got acrylics and more knowledge than I did in 1995.

  • @ThePaintingClinic

    Green is slightly more coarse so has better gap filling qualities.

    Hi thanks for the video! I've run into a problem painting my first model. I'm building a U.S.S Missouri model and along the hull I had to tape it off to paint the bottom portion of the hull. I was super happy with my color I mixed and was pleased with how it looked brushing on acrylic paint. I let it dry over night and when I went to remove the masking tape it pulled off some of the paint. I had some paint on the tape and when I pulled it off it took a few spots of paint off from the bottom of the hull. I'm guessing this happened because the paint on the tape dried along with the paint on the hull and when I pulled the tape of it took some of the paint below the tape line with it. I can just tape it again and touch up the spots that came off but I want to know how to prevent this from happening again. I have a feeling it wont look right after I do so a second question would be how do you get acrylic paint off a plastic model if make a mistake? Thanks for the video

    • @ThePaintingClinic
      @ThePaintingClinic  5 лет назад

      Remove the tape as soon as possible, like within minutes if possible. Also some acrylic paints work differently than others. Vallejo Model Color for example is vinyl based and very prone to peeling off in big chunks once it starts going because it's flexible. Depending on where the mistake happens you'll likely have to sand it off or just paint over it. If it's a small piece you can soak it in Purple Power or Simple Green.

    For beginners this would be a fantastic video :) the only thing I would say is that you can never fully "destroy" models. Theres always the stripping option or (dare I say it) re-priming it if its just a cheap one. But again, great video :) really enjoyed it

    Great video! I do a bit of model making in college, but I really want to get back into plastic kits. I did do a bit of it a few years ago with ok results I guess (no airbrushing, just brushing the paint on) and then stopped. Just a question about the rattle can method. Do companies like Humbrol have spray can products?

    Your first bit of advice is wonderful! Inexpensive kits are great learning tools. I've recently been hitting some new tool Airfix kits to improve my skills; cheap but, decent fit. I find it's easier if I only sort of like the subject.
    However, the corollary to getting mad by wrecking some good kits is to be terrified of wrecking a good kit by a lack of skill. Eventually, you've got to risk it.
    Personally, I've got too much invested monetarily and... mentally with too many of my kits. Either they were gifts from someone important or they are no longer in production or what have you. Am I good enough to finally tackle that Wingnut Wings Albatros DVa? Who knows? I should just open the box and start cutting things off of sprues...

  • @ThePaintingClinic

    I don't wash it unless I need to clean off a bunch of sanding dust or something similar. It's not a bad idea. I just don't think it is as necessary as others think. Many will disagree with me.

    Thanks =D

      @finchgould6538 9 лет назад

      Bread CrumbWhen to paint is all about using common sense. Of course you don't paint the interior of a car after building the kit. And you should use a primer coating. Buy a rattle can with primer. Some people say a primer coating is not necessary anymore, but ,again common sense,I would think it's probably a good idea to use it anyways and Doctor Faust also recommends it. It's four months ago since you posted this message and I don't know what experience has told you in this time, but you could also consider using spray cans to paint ,if you don't really get the results you want with brush painting. Use brushes for the small parts. There is a lot of very useful advice here on YT on modelbuilding, but it is important to realize that it's a hobby and that in the beginning you should build the way you are comfortable with ,you will learn a whole lot by building also.

      I use both the Tamiya Extra Thin cement and the Testors glue in the black bottle. Both are good but I find myself using the Extra Thin cement because it flows so beautifully in the seams/joints. The Testors glue is thicker. When I want a big glob of glue I use the Testors glue but when I want a nice flow action between to joints I use the Tamiya Extra Thin cement.

I have no idea i used to build model cars almost 10 years ago so I'm very nervous lol but what would be your opinion on those models they are both by tamiya both 1/35 scale

      +Gary TheGrey I have no idea since I've never built those specific kits. Tamiya is usually decent, but some of the old kits can be ill fitting.

    I’ve been using just standard Tamiya cement for seam welding on my Gundam model kits. What’s the benefit of the extra thin cement other than that it flows better via capillary action?

      Mainly that. It's also thinner so less likely to end up with globs of cement when it dries.

    I realized that I sort of like imperfect production kits. It's a good opportunity to problem solve. Now if the kit is just awful production that's a different story. Wonderful camouflage job by the way.

      I am like you. It gives a nice challenge sometimes. But I have built my share of kits that require help fitting pieces together. Sometimes it is nice to not have to do that. But I agree with you. It is fun to have a kit that needs a little help.

    Now this is a old video but thank you, it is very informative :)
    But a question what scale is best to start with? 1:72 like this?

      Best to start with whatever you feel more comfortable with. I started with 28mm miniatures, so 1/72 feels good to me. Other find it too small.

    Styrene is what plastic model kits are made of. I don't know about toys.

    my first kit was an uss missouri from usa revell and it came out ok but I was not happy with the build cuality (it had a lot of extra plastic in the spot where the molds meed ) and the second one I got was a Bismarck from german revell and the build cuality was a lot better but the bigest poblem is the litle flag decals the are hard for me

    Styrene-that's the kind of plastic that common toys are made of correct? There are scores of different plastics..

    When you said about those things to not buy and build those Harder and rare models first I disagree on not to buy but I agree not to build it first what happens in the future the kit won't be for sale anymore longer so you can buy but don't build it first save it for the future

      TheSteven798v2 You've got a point there. The models are not available for a very long time.The models don't spoil. And you can enjoy the awesome images on the lid of the boxes, they're like art.However I would not buy very expensive models just for stock;if something drastic occurs in your private life for example,you may not have time for or be interested in modelling anymore and that would be a waste of money.Nowadays some models can be quite expensive..And if you're an absolute beginner, buy one model at a time and build it ,you may come to the conclusion that modelling just isn't your cup of chocolate after all and then you don't want six modelkits lying around in your room.

      I'm just saying if you have a lot of money it's a good advise for rich people
