The Multipurpose Dock Ship Bahia (NDM Bahia) is a French-made Foudre-class amphibious assault ship. The ship, built for the French Navy by Naval Group and named Siroco, was in the service of the French National Navy from 1998 until 2015, when it was acquired by the Brazilian Navy.
The NDM “Bahia”, whose initial name was “Siroco” in the French National Navy, began operations in December 1998, being used on the international scene in various missions, including the humanitarian one in Haiti, on the occasion of the earthquake that devastated that country, in 2010, and combating piracy off the coast of Somalia in 2013, ending its operational activities in that Navy in July 2015.
Occupation
Employed in transporting troops, vehicles, helicopters, equipment, ammunition and supplies directly to the area of ​​operations. Although designed for high-intensity operations, it is also suitable for low-intensity operations, such as humanitarian missions and disaster relief. It has the capacity to load and unload, by sea or air, and to operate with landing craft in the open sea.
