Very interesting to see the history from a third person point of view. I've never imagine that it is something that's gonna happen in my lifetime, yet it is. I found an interesting survey from a group of Taiwan contain provider asking on street whether Taiwanese know 1)whether they think they are related to china (no), and 2) why it says china on their passports (....) and what would this be perceived when crossing boarders. It is sad that we take them as sincere countryman and act like so, but there's no reciprocal. And it needs to end up at least right now in a military showoff...
I don't know which survey you found, but nope, their passports show TWN (Republic of China) instead of CHN (People's Republic of China). And ironically, they can use their TWN passports to enter most countries without visas, while the CHN passport holders cannot.

I am merely being sentimental from an individual's perspective. and it is interesting to investigate how and why that the dynamic and attitude changes, not just in formal news, but also within people on the island. and on the visa thing, I don't know where your pride comes from. it is quite exactly what ought to happen after Chiang Kai-shek's regime chose to fled mainland and with basically all resources and elites they could scrap. Yet they were the legitimate government supposing represent and protect all its citizens. sounding familiar? chiang gave up on alleviating the poverty issues and mediating national tension. of course you can have a good life with resources supposing for a whole nation and future generations.

If people don't reciprocate your feelings, you cannot use that as an excuse(!) for violence - it is people's own choice, who they want to associate with. And it is not possible to consider someone to be "sincere countrymen", yet "need" to make a "military showoff" at them. That these military things are happening shows that there is nothing to "reciprocate" to. The Taiwanese are not "sincere countrymen" to the Chinese, simply by China's actions.

Since then Taiwan has resisted the People's Republic's military and political pressures with the help of Republic of China troops which were sent to Formosa to establish a provisional administration in the aftermath of Japanese retreat. There is no historical or legal basis for any country to claim Taiwan because Taiwan is a country of its own.
