- From its revolutionary first game, to its legendary sequel, to the way Episode Two left things off on a massive cliffhanger, to the torturous wait for a resolution to that cliffhanger that has endured ever since, Half-Life is a series that has left a major impact on millions of people in more ways than one. And, impossibly enough, just days from now, we'll finally be getting our hands on the next full-fledged Half-Life game, when Half-Life: Alyx launches as a VR-exclusive title on PC on March 23.
Given how much of a focus narrative and storytelling have been for Half-Life as a series throughout its life, this is the perfect time to look back and refresh our memories on all that has happened across its multiple entries so far. And here, that is exactly what we'll be doing, starting with Half-Life and ending at the notorious Half-Life 2: Episode Two cliffhanger.

I find it funny that VR is the sole reason we even get a new half-life game at all and people are still bitching about it. I for one am super hyped about half-life alyx on monday. My body is ready =)

Edit: After that, it's actually a really well done and well-researched video. Unlike most of these "Half Life Story So Far" videos -- which are just random "youtubers" who know nothing about Half Life and are just trying to get clicks off the release of Alyx by reading wiki articles into a mic -- this guy is pretty obviously a fan of the series. The video is worth a watch.

There's an alternate timeline where Cave Johnson buys Black Mesa, names it Blaperture Mesa, and shuts down the research that led to the events of Half-life. Pretty weird.
Even stranger is *how* Cave Johnson knew how stupid and dangerous that research was.

For one, stories have never been evolving, as the story telling form isn’t gonna magically get better and new stories can only come from new events, of which it is doubtful that new ones happen that are greater than stories already told of events already happened!Sadly, it’s possible all the best stories have already been told.

You always play or watch things by the order of release, not the chronological timeline. A perfect example of that is the Star Wars prequels which are best appreciated AFTER the original trilogy.
@@old-dream-left-behind The Machete order is the best though: 4-5-2-3-6 . You start and end with the best movies, and don't get spoiled about Vader. You take 2 and 3 like a sort of flashback that explains the background of Vader. You can add Rogue 1 before 4, and Phantom Menace is mostly skipped as it doesn't really add anything, but can be seen before 2.

This game is gonna be the ONLY reason I get VR. I'm a HUGE fan of this game, and can't wait to play the newest one.

I don't think they ever stopped. They workshop and plan each game so it's incredibly brilliant. I'd rather have 1 good game every 5 or 10 years, rather than blah ones every 2, y'know?

It is still so unclear to me why gman gave them the sample that caused the resonance cascade... effectively signaling the combine to invade earth? Yet, he supports / hires Gordon to fight the combine? Gman seems like a 4th wall plot piece, who’s sole purpose is to create the story... his motives are otherwise contradictory...
At the end of Half-Life, G-Man reveals that the goal of his employers was to gain control of Xen, for as of now unknown reasons. He set those events in motion by manipulating various scientists at Black Mesa to make the resonance cascade happen, thus sucking most of the inhabitants to Xen into our dimension. After Black Mesa went to hell, G-Man spent the next two days observing the events that transpired, ultimately "hiring" Gordon Freeman, and placing him into stasis...only AFTER the Nihilanth was killed.
20 years later, long after Earth had been dominated by the Combine, G-Man takes Gordon out of stasis and places him into City 17. His motives are unclear, only musing that "the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world". Gordon isn't placed back into stasis until after he destroys the Citadel's dark energy reactor, resulting in a massive explosion that essentially makes the Combine's quantum tunneling device unstable...dealing a massive blow to the Combine's operations.
Based on G-Man's speech at the end of Half-Life 2, there are two possibilities:
1) G-Man needed to show off Gordon's skills to his employers and other potential clients. So he chose to insert Gordon into City 17 because of the uprising the resistance was nearly ready to launch, figuring Gordon would display the same skills he showed off in Black Mesa.
2) G-Man doesn't seem to care much for the Combine (as we now know after Half-Life: Alyx), so he let Gordon lose in City 17 to ensure that the resistance was successful. This also has the added effect of keeping Alyx Vance alive, whom the G-Man seems to have a purpose for.
So basically “Man in the high castle” but replace Nazis with aliens.”

They are no canon anyway and not made by Valve I think
@@SzatanistaDzezowy they are gearbox creations and think of them as canon-lite. So they are able to re-visit them on a later date if need.

@@Biggy_Jimothy Blue Shift brought Barney, who is on of the supporting characters in HL2. Opposing Force though was weird and not really in the mood of the series imo.

Yes and it is actually spelled Grigory. It's a slavic name which fits because half life 2 takes place in Serbia, a slavic (eastern europe) country and the name means to shepherd a flock which fits his story perfectly.

So, I’ve never played this game, can anyone answer why the soldiers are sent to kill the scientists as well as the aliens so nobody knows anything and yet the commands they are receiving don’t acknowledge how the soldiers know about the aliens themselves too?
The soldiers were sent to clean up the project and kill anyone associated with it this was to prevent anyone knowing who caused it and to prevent further damage. Gordon Freeman was the man responsible since he was at ground zero along with Ali. As soon as the xen crystal was inserted into the machine G-man whispered into Ali's ear "prepare for unforseen consequences" hence why in episode 2 he nearly fainted. Gordon survived the initial explosion by the xen crystal teleporting him to safety in a different universe then back inside the test chamber. Gman was interested in Gordon because he battled threw all dangers he faced and survived everything thrown at him and killing the creature holding the portal open on the other side of xen. This convinced Gmans employers he had limitless potential. Gordon accepted the deal Gman offered him and he was was stored in the void for 20 years so nobody could harm him or freeman causing harm to anybody else.

Not sure where you got the details about the Xen aliens and their homeworld and how something about the war forced them there. There is no indication in the games that Xen isn't their homeworld and the only thing we are told is that they have been at war since before humans discovered them. Also, I cringed so hard every time you pronounced Nihilanth incorrectly. Otherwise it was a good video.

No. Though Alyx is amazing, Walking Dead, Asgards Wrath and Boneworks are all phenomenal VR games

I think that it sucks you didn't show a single image of the original game. Black Mesa is not an official remake and while it might be prettier, it's not a good idea to present it as a Half-Life replacement when the original game still runs and plays great. As the original still provides a better experience gameplay wise. Black Mesa is best experienced AFTER having played the original.

Guess you'll only have to enjoy it by reading the gameplay or watching it on RUclips. VR Is an incredible thing & for Valve to make a HL game for it is the best decision they've made in years, it will revolutionize vr platforming & open the minds of other great artistic creators that want to take the same path & make a vr game. It will inspire consumers to save up some doe & take a chance with the headset, a very good investment I'll tell you that 👌 Speaking from experience since late 2016
