I was introduced to the Band way back in 1968 when my history teacher strolled into the classroom with Music From Big Pink under his arm. He asked one of us to get the record player and blew our young minds. So how cool is that? I'm 70 and I remember that day as if it was yesterday.

I agree with you I love Rick Danko's soulful voice on the songs he sings.

It's seems right that Garth is the last one standing . He was classically trained in piano and musical theory. When they first started playing together he made them give him $10 a week. This way he could tell his parents that he was giving music lessons and not wasting his education playing in a band!

The first time I became aware of Robbie Robertson was through his 1988 hit ‘Somewhere Down The Crazy River’.

As a Cajun who can trace his roots back to Acadia, this song always had a special place in my collection. It's funny you mention how Canadian it sounds because when I hear the accordion and fiddle I always think of how Cajun it sounds. I guess we're both correct! 😁

Absolute Genius Band ,don't usually get 4 members of a band that all have individually great voices ,of course Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm ,Rick Danko and Richard Manuel ,RIP the lot of them , my favourite tracks were ,It makes no difference, whispering pines, the weight, and the night they drove old dixie down.

I love all those tracks toe, especially It Makes No Difference. Rick Danko's voice on that is heartbreaking!

Byron Berline, perhaps the greatest fiddler of recorded history, playing those haunting parts. Also, might be the last great vocal performance of these guys on record.

If this song had been sung by The Eagles or CSNY, they would have played it non-stop on the radio..

You want to react to some Songs of the band, where Robbie also sings, try 'Out of the blue', 'Ain't no more cane' and 'To Kingdom come'

Robbie didn't sing lead much. I think one verse in Kingdom Come and it seems like another song that didn't make a record. Robbie was a great songwriter and guitarist, but his voice left alot to be desired. And why would he sing when there is 3 of the best voices in rock history in The Band?

Yes, you are so right. He wrote in his book Testimony, that he felt it was his job to right songs for his 3 singers. The Nigth the drove Old Dixie Down, for Levon, The Shape I'm in for Richard, and It makes no difference for Rick. He was right, of course.
