    Welcome! Today I'm sharing my experience of building our monolithic slab foundation from scratch with no experience!
    In this video I share my experience of building our home and the lessons I've learnt along the way. I made a huge mistake with our engineered slab/floating slab that I'm so glad we caught.
    If you're thinking of building your own home from scratch, or even just laying a foundation, make sure you watch this video to learn from my costly mistake.

    This is what I needed. To see someone else building something all by themselves. I have a garage and a house to build, but was losing motivation. Watching this gets me back in the mood to start getting past just having the plans sitting on my pinball machine collecting dust.

    Don’t let the little things get to you! That was a small mistake that you will learn from. Overall you are doing amazingly well with this construction job! For you to undertake such a difficult project, basically by yourself, is really a huge accomplishment! One tip when using the angle grinder is to use protective glasses that are slim arou the face, so you don't get any sparks into your eyes, that might require surgery (drilling or scraping the eyeball to get them out).

    I have been the 'company representative' to the general contractor for our last 3 builds our company hired done. I got used to my own set of paper plans. Print as large as possible, we used a local print shop. This way if anything changed along the way, I wrote it on my copy. These notes helped with billing and future questions, like 'why did we do that?' Keep on trucking, you are doing good!!

    Hi Biata ! Happy Mothers Day and noticed your daughter eagerly helping with the vapor barrier application so you are doing great with parenting and construction. I never did like
    math that much . If I understand correctly your read on the plans resulted in adding more
    concrete on the top instead of gravel at the base level. Despite the extra $1,000 cost the
    positive is that you have a thicker concrete slab which has to be a good thing. You are doing a magnificent job and the rebar lay was an awesome achievement on your own. 👍👍👍✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻❤

    Hi Biata I am very impressed with your work and commitment to doing things well, I am a carpenter so I was truly impressed with your forming for the slab !!!
    Like your concreter said most forms are a bit sloppy in construction so be proud of that.
    The extra 1000 dollars will be worth it as your base will be that much stronger so it will be a sound investment.
    I came across your channel by accident and am now a subscrber and will watch your progress with keen interest.
    If you ever want any advice on carpentry matters please don't hesitate to ask. John in the UK xx

We don't get snow or cold weather like you do so I'm not sure how it works. Are you putting in floor heating as well? Take care, and remember to use gloves when handling the rebar, you can get some very bad cuts from it. See you next week, Naomi x

    Grinder should have the guard on and the handle on top. This protects from exploding discs and having the handle on top allows you to stop kick back. Kinda like you wouldn't put the chainsaw handle on the bottom of a saw.

Just a regular slab. It takes three separate concrete pours! We just chose the engineered route with in floor heating! Cheaper with concrete even with my mistake!

    Great videos I have always wanted to build but as an inner city resident never had the opportunity, Plans should be viewable clearly on your phone at any magnification. You view on phone issue losing clarity can be solved. its possibly two problems. Try reprint from cad to PDF at highest resolution. Its also possible your PDf viewer doesn't process detail and it needs setting change or another PDf viewer, PDF viewers often have settings to optimize speed or optimize resolution. select optimize resolution. Even if you fix the view on phone as an older viewer I would have a paper print set at the site and red pen the checking of every dimension.

    What about cutting all the extra out of the each p stirrup and going to Harbor freight or I guess up there it’s called Princess auto and buying a cheap welder and learning a new trade if you don’t already know how to weld metal and then you don’t have to buy the extra concrete?

    Wow, concrete is pricy in Canada. Here in California (where everything is usually expensive) a yard is $134 delivered.
    You've saved yourself far more than $1000 in the labor you've done. Had a plumber quote me $1200 to connect a drain pipe to a shower pan. (it cost me $90 in supplies to do it myself)

    Haha..you got the spinnah! You've probably figured out by now, just pull a little tension on the wire ties and then spin, they'll snug themselves right up.
    That sure sucks about having to add more concrete. Me being me....I'd be shortening them up. I'm also a welder.

    • @SimpleLivingwithBiata
      @SimpleLivingwithBiata  Год назад

      Haha it was tricky to figure out at first but I got the hang of it! Very cool that you’re a welder! I’d love to learn! It would’ve been a smart idea to shorten the P stirrups. Although there were 114 of them haha! But because the plans called for 20” of concrete in the haunches I may have failed inspection if my inspector measured it

      @@SimpleLivingwithBiata Heh..good. It takes a few times to get the hang of and only a couple of more to master.
      I was just trying to think out of the box, a way to make things work without having to add more concrete. A guy with a welding machine...well...chop chop, zap zap. For something like that it wouldn't take long. I used to have structural steel certs. Marrying rebar back together is easy.

    its a magnificent endeavor might be certain to raise the rebar about 2 inches from the base of your form so concrete gets all the way under and around it... then again might check with someone else before going through the extra work.
    Personally i would have staked the extra rebar into the ground to hold up the corners and the framed rebar so it would be easier to tie. however i don't think you wanted holes in your insulation.
    that's a lot more than i would have imagined to go into a foundation

    Even on my printed plans, there are issues with both legibility and where the engineers put the Wrong number in a couple of places. And yes, verified Wrong, by the engineers.

  • @gavinsmi
    @gavinsmi Год назад

    I’m not much of a commenter, but this video popped up and I couldn’t help but laugh because I’m doing almost exactly the same thing, and while researching I found almost nobody doing quite the foundation my engineer had specified. My mistakes have been similar. I should have had a second hand for dirt work, because the “top” portions of the foundation (mine has three deep “ribs” through it like the outer edge) weren’t precise enough and I didn’t consider the impact that would have on the 7” slab with rebar and pex (in floor heat) in it, cutting 2” insulation to fit SUCKS, taping it sucks even more (especially when wet), and I’m sure we’re about to have the same amount of fun lining up anchor bolts, if you’re pre-installing those. If you haven’t already finished the rebar (I’m about to finish mine), my one newly learned tip is to be extremely careful with where the rebar lands in the poured concrete, including distance from the forms and insulation, but probably more importantly the distance from the surface.
    Really great to see such a similar scenario to my own playing out, by someone willing to film it. Every time I start I lose patience for it as soon as the camera battery dies or card fills up.

      @SimpleLivingwithBiata  Год назад

      Hey! Thanks for sharing this with me! I had a similar experience with researching this! There wasn’t a lot of good quality videos outlining every portion of a mono slab build. Cutting all that insulation was sooo much work. The p stirrups have a special place in h*ll lol. I never want to do that again
