    I'm not sure why RUclips is suddenly showing me all these barefoot videos but I've been surprised to hear how much difficulty people generally seem to have with transitioning! I've been barefoot for about a year now and I just full sent it one day. I bought a pair of Vivobarefoots and began wearing them exclusively the moment I got them. I quickly bought a pair of running shoes as well, and I do all my running/hiking in barefoots. I haven't worn any of my old "normal" shoes since, and I've never had a single problem with the transition, no pain or difficulty or anything, so I'm genuinely surprised to see these videos and read all the comments sharing "barefoot transition horror stories."
    I did spend a lot of time barefoot as a kid-- probably most of my childhood when I wasn't in school, I was not wearing shoes. I have never worn shoes in the house, so all of my home time has always been barefoot as well. And for the past year I have eaten a carnivore diet, which has eliminated inflammation, loosened muscle tightness and strengthened my entire body.. I wonder if that has anything to do with it, too.
    Either way, I'm finding it very interesting that this journey takes years for some people! It didn't take any time at all for me, I just swapped one day and that was that. Thanks for sharing your story, I learned something today!

      I feel the same way, but I've always been a toe-runner even with "regular" jogging shoes and I always wore skating shoes which are flatter and less pointy so I guess I didn't come too far in shaping my feet the wrong way to begin with

    I'm 55yo and slowly making the transition to barefoot shoes. Thanks for this, it's a great help. I'm always barefoot indoors and feel like this has been a big plus with the transition. I feel good so far, taking it easy, and am confident that I'll integrate barefoot shoes completely at some point.

    I made the transition too. I went too fast, thinking “I’m different and will adjust quickly.” No. Doesn’t work that way, no matter your level of positive thinking. Thankfully I held onto my goal through my recovery and listened to advice as presented here (though from earlier sources).
    The benefits of barefoot shoes are incalculable for me. It’s worth the effort and time it takes.
    But listen to what she says and listen to your body along the way. Your patience and efforts will be rewarded.

    I wish I’d come across this video two years ago! I decided to give barefoot shoes a try and immediately ditched my old trainers. I developed bad plantar fasciitis and very tight calves. I went back to regular shoes and sprained my ankle playing my first soccer game with them and have been dealing with the aftermath ever since. I’ve been working on exercises to regain my foot and ankle strength and hope to eventually re-transition to barefoot shoes!

    Maybe it's because I never wore shoes with much of a heel and started walking completely barefoot through the forest before buying my first pair of barefoot shoes, but switching to barefoot shoes was no problem at all for me, i just put them on and started walking with them. It's interesting for me to hear that it can take years to switch, I imagine your feet must have been already very specialized to walking in fashion shoes.

    I began transitioning to minimalist shoes a few months ago. I had posterior tibial tendonitis and was put in a boot for two weeks, but I could not get out of the boot without excruciating pain. What do do? Started foot exercises 2x a day and learned how to tape my feet with kinesiology tape just to be able to get out of that boot. After a year of doing this, I bought a pair of Altra shoes, but I put my custom orthotic in these shoes as I continue to build up strength and flexibility in my feet. My goal is to go completely minimal. My feet were ridiculously weak, but the podiatrist's recommendations made my feet worse. Physician, heal thyself!

    I was a barefoot hippy in the 1970s and always go bare indoors and in my garden (extra fun in the snow) When I heard about zero sandals I had to try them and it was love at first try. No need for transition. I even ran in them. Now I run more seriously I went for Altra shoes. Zero drop and generous toe box but with a bit of cushion for the heel. I had to go for a men’s size to get the right fit though. Worth trying if you find them a bit tight over the arch. Definitely need to try them all on to find the best ones for your foot shape.

    I have been running with barefoot shoes a couple years now and I really like it. The only issue i still have is that my big toe is still a bit crooked inwards and the progress seems to go very slow by itself (if there is any progress at all, hard to tell). I have cheap toe spacers, but they seem to me made for tiny women's feet so they likely don't do anything. I have considered buying a better pair of spacers that fit my large feet, but your rubber band trick seemed clever too so might try that first!

  • @MsTigerVeronica
    @MsTigerVeronica 2 года назад +8

    I think what needs to be mentioned is measuring the size, width and lenght of the foot as well as being mindful of the natural shape of the toes and selecting shoes based on these parameters. I feel that online barefoot shops (at least those where I have been shopping) have started to include these size parameters into the description of their products. That is massive help in selecting the right fitting pair, since our feet vary so much it can take time to find a good match as there should be some additional space available for the toes to be able to strech into the different directions.
    Also for excercising, there are few nice products in the last years which people can have in home. For instance I have a rug which emulates the look and feel of tree roots, it is from a small brand called Rootyrug. Very cool, my small son loves it too. 👣

    • @darlenehume4707
      @darlenehume4707 2 года назад +2

      Rootyrug?! That sounds awesome! I’m gonna look into that. I am in the process of making something like that. You use a boot tray and fill it with small round-ish river rocks. I plan on putting it in front of my kitchen sink and standing there barefoot while I do dishes.

    I've wear Vivo trainers, five fingers, and Xero DIYs. During the transition, when I over did it, the insides of my knees would hurt, i guess where my natural arch strength was lacking. I would hobble around in cushy crocs and my old cushy running shoes, it supported my arch until it could recover.

    I started using barefoot shoes a couple of months ago. Besides of my yoga practice (or thanks to) I got to notice that my body was getting tighter and tighter. I was also noticing that my body was getting out of balance more often (in the sense of some areas getting tight, creating uncomforting or hurting feelings). In any case yoga was helping a lot. One day, last week, I decided that was a good moment to make the first small run. I was aware that my achilleas tendon was a bit tight and probably my back leg area muscles were too. The result was I rupture of fibers in the soleus. I would be happy to understand to to transit the adaptation to this kind of shoes and which physical changes they create, because I am feeling a lot of them, but I cannot really transit and be aware of them. And I would also like to know how this adaptation would differ from one person to another (one being a trained person with good body condition, and other with a sedentary lifestyle). How each of them should face such adaptation? Thanks for the help!

      There's really not much you can do to transition into going barefoot, it's going to hurt regardless of how much you prep or exercise. The only way to do it is to power through it, don't push yourself though, but know that while pain is inevitable, it's infinitely worth it.

    Hi. Just found your channel and it looks great. I bought a pair of Vivo Barefoot shoes a couple of year's back but for various reasons have hardly used them. Fancied the idea for trail walks etc. What I'm not clear about is whether it's wise to only use barefoot shoes occasionally or should it really be one or the other (after a gradual transition). In short will using barefoot sometimes but not other times be bad for my feet and muscles? I can't find much info on this when I try to research it.

    • @LauraTryUK
      @LauraTryUK  3 года назад +2

      Hey David, a great question. A gradual transition (wearing both barefoot and your normal shoes) would be a great way to move over the total barefoot.
      Wear barefoot for a few kms/hours of standing around, then switch, You will know if you have done too much barefoot - your body will tell you.

      If you have never used barefoot shoes, i would not recommend having only one pair running shoes. Personally during my transition when I planned to run a short distance I used my barefoot shoes while for longer distances i continued using my asics. If you need a new pair of long-distance shoes now I'd recommend a pair of Altras as they have a zero-drop heel but still quite a lot of cushioning and then also have a pair of "real" barefoot shoes for walks and short (very short in the beginning!) distance runs. When you are ready, progressively increase the distance with your barefoot shoes until you can skip you cushioned shoes completely.

My question is if I should use forefoot/midfoot strike -which I recently adapted-with both of these shoes or should I only use forefoot with my new Altras and perhaps go back to my old semi heel strike while finishing my run in heeled Asics to give my calves a break?Thanks

    I have a question - how long and how often do you do the rubber band stretch and doing the toe exercise with your hand that you showed in the video? I have "bunionettes" which is like a bunion but on the little toes side of the feet, and it is genetic. They are so bad now that the toe escapes from the plastic separaters so they don't work. I am going to try this and see if it helps.

      Hey Sarah, I do the toe exercises most days when standing at my desk. No set times or durations, just when I think of it. The rubber band and other stretches just when I think of them. I'd like to do them more but sometimes have other stuff to do also.

    Do you have an idea for a pair of barefoot sandals for the transition ? I tought about xero z-trail but i think it is maybe still too much because I train to be capable to do 50 km walking atm. My classic sandalf died sunday and I bought my first barefoot shoes and I started to train at the gym sometimes barefoot (in general for the big first heavy exercise) and I try to be barefoot at home. But I think minimal shoes and sandals are too hard for me maybe ? I want to say for walking long time. Because I feel nothing special if I stay barefoot at home all the day or I can walk or run 1 km barefoot on road too. But walking during 2-3 hours barefoot if not the same (long time with pression on my foot and heel).

    Try the running technique POSE ( extra good for cadence between 180 - 270 ) or CHI ( extra good for cadence that are max 180 )
    Both are very good for barefoot running.
    Personal do I use POSE. it can bee used on ice, with heavy backpacks, even without shoes on asphalt without injuries or hurting if you get the technique right.

    You definitely gotta go slow and listen to your body. I'm about a month in after almost a decade of wearing pretty much only stability running shoes because I overpronate. I also sprained my left foot on my way to work back in 2016, worked that full shift and then the next 2 days before going to the hospital, and I never did anything to rehabilitate it so it's weaker than my right foot. This has become apparent in my transition. For the first couple weeks it was cool, I would just do like 20 minute walks around the neighborhood, but then I did a couple longer walks and the posterior tibial tendon in my left leg started hurting, so I'd have to take a day or two off of walking for it to stop hurting, and then I'd go out and it would hurt again. My right foot is pretty much fine, no issue there, everything that's come up has been on my left side, which makes sense. So, it's gonna be a while until that side has caught up. I should get toe spacers. My toes are decently straight and can spread out, thankfully, but I think the extra width would help make it easier to hold up my ankles. I have to completely change the way I walk so my ankles don't collapse anymore, which I'm sure my previously injured foot is not happy about. :P

    The walking technique should be the most important thing when using barefoot shoes or barefoot.. do not hit the ground with the heel first. When walking, hit the ground with the front forefoot first, which carries the impact. the heel is used for support and balance. it is weird at first, but this is how we are meant to walk. walking forefoot first also improves running performance greatly, as the brain does it automatically after few weeks or months.

  • @superH3108

    Our feet were meant/ created to be bare and that's why there are a number of sensors/nerve endings under our feet which connects from top to toe. When we walk on sand, gravel and tiny stones/pebbles,our entire body gets a stimulation through these sensors. Apart from that it allows your body to connect with the earth and absorb free Electrons from the earth's surface. When you consider the above aspects, there's no alternative for going barefoot. The effects mentioned above are scientifically proved facts and no shoe can come even closer to the effects of walking on naked feet.
    Go barefoot always for good health and happy feet !!!!

    • @shemashekarshalom539

      It is possible to transition faster. I went almost immediately from standard modern shoes to exclusively minimalist shoes.
      You can search ‘Xero Shoes Born to Run 2’ here on RUclips to get some suggestions on how to transition.
      Basically
      1) listen to your body, pain usually means stop doing something.
      2) You are at your most vulnerable at the beginning, it takes time and patience. Overworking your body is a good way revert progress made.

    does anyone know any good barefoot shoes for cycling?

    • @rangik7221
      @rangik7221 2 года назад

      What sort of cycling?
      I do mountain biking, using flat pedals with steel 'pins' which grip the soles of the shoes. I generally wear 5 10 Freeriders, but have brought a pair of Freet connect 2 (a 'barefoot' running shoe) to use on the bike.
      I have only had the shoes 1 day, so it was just a short test ride, on the road about 1km, to see how the pins feel.
      The shoes felt good, could feel the pins but wasn't painful or overly uncomfortable. They 'stuck' to the pedals nicely. I will lower the pins to 3mm, from 5 or 6mm, to see how that feels or if it changes the grip.

      @@nycbike73 that is going to be one hell of a search! I've only seen narrow clip shoes, I went to flat pedals because I couldn't get decent sized shoes, all way too narrow. Even the 5 10s feel narrow and I leave the lacing towards the toes really loose.
      I think Shimano released a clip in sandal.
      Good luck with your search. You could ask your favorite bike shoe manufacturer for a custom made shoe 😉
