  • A short animated film about the Belgian political structure.
    The text was written by Marcel Sel, a Belgian writer, author of Walen Buiten, a best-seller on the «Belgian Crisis».
    The music was specifically composed by Laurent Aglat for the film, and Emma Dornan's beautiful voice gave the commentary its magical tone.
    The film was directed by Jerome de Gerlache.

    We certainly do not agree that fries should be called 'French fries'. In fact, they should be called 'Belgian fries'!

      +HelenaHaruko How about calling them 'chips' in English? Like the other English speakers in Europe do? :P

    • @HelenaHaruko
      @HelenaHaruko 8 лет назад +12

      +Kyuu -bbles It's a good suggestion. The only problem is that in Belgium (in Dutch) chips is what British people call crisps. So it would be very confusing for Belgian people who only speak English at an intermediate level or are not aware of differences between American and British English (which is the majority of Belgian people I think).
      Also, proud as we are of the quality of 'Belgian fries', I would prefer a word that distinguishes between the Belgian product and what passes for 'fries' in other countries.

    • @kyuubikira
      @kyuubikira 8 лет назад +5

      HelenaHaruko Yeah, I blame the Americans :c Just call them 'fries' then, since it was only the yanks that call them 'French fries' anyway~ :P

    Dude... We eten mossels met onze eigen frieten he! Why everybody is saying 'french fries'?? Fries where in 1680 invented in BELGIUM! So why the fuck would we eat french fries?

    • @lenaberben
      @lenaberben 8 лет назад +4

      "To french" is de manier waarop onze frieten worden gesneden. Daarom worden ze french fries genoemd, als in "frenched fries".

    • @missjul8
      @missjul8 8 лет назад +2

      It is recognised universally as "French fries", even in Belgium. Not sure why they/we agreed to that XD

      ***** It's true. Even when I saw Stromae in concert here in the USA, Stromae made a joke about it. It's coined as "french fries". But when I order them I just say "ya I'll have the Belgian fries" and Americans look at me like okay... They're really just called "fries" anyway. Frietjes!

    I'm belgian and this is hilarious... I don't really get our system (like the most of us 😂)... but what's hilarious here is that no belgian cares if the political explanation was right but the fact that you said 'french fries' and 'swiss chocolat' triggers them more then ever... I just love my country 😂😂

    The only offensive thing in this video is that they claim we make " Swiss chocolate " like our own isn't good enough . Belgium makes Belgian chocolate and it's the best it the world , end of story :P

    I'm British but hate the benefit sponging culture and how people here milk the NHS here. I have been to Belgium 5 times and spent much time learning the culture and the language. I do not wish to visit the French part as I prefer Dutch speaking Flanders. The architecture, the food and the beers are amazing, the countryside is clean and well kept, as are the cities. The people are friendly plus Ostend and all along the Belgian coast there are beautiful sandy beaches. So unless you have been to Belgium and understood it, please do not put this country down.

    Belgium is one of my favourite countries, and this is part of the reason why. Yes, they're a bit flawed, but I actually really like that. It's charming. Also, they enjoy life properly. Granted, Wallonia is a bit of a development country: I went to Liége once, and it was filled with sad faces and the sort of concrete blocks of flats you'd expect to see in Romania. Oh well.
    If you're looking for a boring country, try The Netherlands instead.

      ik vond dit video super beledigend en waarlijk respekloos tegenover
      Belgen zuals ik en jou... You see guys there's nothing wrong with a
      country which have more than one language, Belgium may not run perfekt but
      no country runs perfekt and our multilinguism makes it a little
      complexer but I find in absolutely amazing to live in a trilingual
      country! I love my country for that, because we human beings of this planet have to accept and deal with multiculturalism in one way or another if we want peace, and therefore Belgium's amazing! Because we learn at an early age to feel strongly bounded to another culture and another language, which is unique! Why do you think Israel-Palestina are thinking of forming a state like ours? Because WE live together and live in peace and love! We show that it's absolutely possible, so don't you try to make my beautiful country and
      its amazing population look so ridiculous!

    Okay here is the real belgium:
    1. Belgium is not a city in france, that's what people that don't live in belgium think.
    2. Swiss chocolate ain't our chocolate, we are not switzerland we ARE BELGIUM so the chocolate we make here is BELGIAN CHOCOLATE....! We are known for our DELICIOUS BELGIAN CHOCOLATE !
    3. We might be a little country but we ARE STRONGER than you think.
    4. FRENCH FRIES ARE NOT EXISTANT, IT IS BELGIAN FRIES but sadly people think they are french fries and think it was made from france.... IT WAS MADE IN BELGIUM !!!! SO PLEASE START SAYING BELGIAN FRIES OR JUST FRIES BUT DON'T SAY FRENCH FRIES. Cause we made it and we're proud we made it
    5. WE ARE NOT A BORING COUNTRY! If you say we are then EVERY COUNTRY is supposedly BORING TOO because WE ARE A COUNTRY WITH NORMAL PEOPLE AND MANY EXCITING DIFFERENT PEOPLE!
    6. Maybe we are a weird country BUT THAT MAKES US SPECIAL.
    7. Sorry but it's all true

It would be like "Germany for Dummies", and only talking about Hitler and the Nazis. And before you say "its all just banter, your getting too worked up about this", speaking as a Belgian, I was very offended by this and I hope others see just how stupid this video is.

    How ignorant can a person be, seriously. If making videos like these can you atleast look into your research more deeply?
    i'll explain why we are this complicated
    Very important word: HISTORY!!!! The reason we speak 4 different languages in Belgium is pure history. Long story short a peace of the northern Netherlands and a peace of eastern France merged together, boom, there you have 2 languages. There was a country but they had no king so they just took a prince from germany and there you have language number 3, a couple of deccades later, english became the international language so we all had to learn it.
    I think it's a good thing because the average belgian speaks 3 - 4 languages at the age of 20, when you're about 16 you can even learn spanish in high school. comapred with the USA or the UK, they only speak 1 languages on average.
    I don't see how this is complicated, I even explained it in the most simplistic way possible.
    another thing. I don't want to prag or anything but the reason we are this complicated is because it's really effective. We have the best social security, education system and healthcare, hell, even the best airforce. Ever seen what the calculations of an architect looks like when he/she is building a bridge? Nothing in the world that is effective isn't complicated in the end. Think about that when you spread your ignorance and our flaws into our faces.

    Flanders and Wallonia hate and love each other.
    The Walloon citizens are irritated by the Flemish mostly for their separatist-minded politicians, whilst they love Flanders because of the economic transfers, together with their overall friendly behavior. The Flemish on the other hand dislike the Walloon citizens for being 'lazy' as they do not have the same economic output as that of Flanders (this concept of them being lazy is mostly due to historical events, it used to be that the Walloon had the bigger industry, and then the stereotype was reversed, where the Flemish people were seen as lazy and unmotivated).
    But the Flemish citizens do love the Walloon cause of their great taste of humor and having the nicest and most natural, beautiful regions in Belgium.
    That's why Belgium will remain Belgium, and not separated into Flanders and Wallonia respectively. They have an intense dislike of each other, whilst still preferring them big time over any other alternative.
    Edit: so seven years later I stumbled upon this and wow, was my English poor at the time. I rewrote it, kept the contents the same, to make it a lot easier on the eyes to read it. It does appear that this comment was the start of my journey into national Belgian politics. I am currently studying political sciences, with the intent to try and secure a seat in the Flemish parlement! I'm quite curious to what the future will hold, but I also realised that I have a burning passions for politics.
    Now that I watch this video again, I must say that this video is very flawed. It mostly comes down to relying on stereotypes whilst not taking into account the history of Belgian political and administrative development. It is generalising the complex ("inefficient", as she mentions in the video) structures to it being a flaw of the Belgian culture, more so than to the very complex eco--cultural landscape of our country.

    Dear belgians:
    Of course you don't produce swiss chocolate, but there are just a lot of people who confuse the two or don't know about belgian chocolate because swiss chocolate might be more famous internationally. That's what that joke is about!
    The video doesn't say that belgium is boring either, in fact, literally the complete opposite.

    The way I remember it, the Dutch speakers never asked for mono-linguism. The Flemish would have been happy with a bilingual country (one where all government officials speak both languages). Regional mono-linguism was demanded by the French, who, after they realized they couldn't get rid of the Flemish and were forced to acknowledge Dutch as an official language, did not want to force their government employees to learn another languages (The educated Flemish were already used to having to speak French to get anything done didn't care).

  • @Warsie
    @Warsie 9 лет назад +7

    I remember someone mentioning they were from the US and spoke French somewhat. They knew one of the languages was French, they were lost and so thought that speaking French to people was a good idea. Unfortunately, they were in the Dutch region, and apparently everyone snubbed them or ignored them. When they got desperate and spoke English, everyone was amazingly nice to them. Someone posted that on tvtropes, and several Belgians said that shit seemed legit

    • @SuperLiss24
      @SuperLiss24 9 лет назад

      yep this seems legit to me, us Flemish people do not get along with the french speaking people in our country, but we are very fond of everything American, and we also feel proud Americans bother to visit our little country ^^ We're very polite people at heart, but those damn Walloons just bring out the worst in us.
      Moral of the story: When speaking to Flemish people as a foreigner, speak English and witness what great people we are :D

    • @Warsie
      @Warsie 9 лет назад

      Lol its hilarious. Does the opposite happened ie you get ignored ar if you speak Dutch in the French speaking region?

    • @SuperLiss24
      @SuperLiss24 9 лет назад

      definitely :D That might also have to do with the fact that Walloons don't learn Dutch in school as intensively as we learn French, meaning they probably won't even understand you if you speak Dutch to them ^^ Then again, they're also not good at speaking English; they just only speak French and are very bad at learning other languages, whereas Flemish people are overall pretty flexible with languages :D

    This clip is basically a right-wing propaganda piece. The book mentioned in the description means "Walloons Get Out". Walloons are inhabitants of the southern part of Belgium: Wallonia. The title is a common slogan used by the extreme right-wing Flemish party, which is anti-immigration, anti-Belgium and anti-EU among other things. They are anti-Belgium because they want an independent Flanders, which is the northern part of the country.

    Belgium provided the uranium for the A-Bomb dropped by the Americans on Hiroshima. It came from the colony of Belgian Congo.
    Belgium is also the world’s main diamond centre (in Antwerp) and second largest petrochemical center. 90% of the world's raw diamonds are negotiated and distributed in Antwerp.
    Antwerp is the world's 6th busiest port in terms of cargo tonnage (2nd outside East Asia, after Rotterdam). It is Europe's 3rd port for container traffic, after Rotterdam and Hamburg.
    Belgian physicist and mathematician Ingrid Daubechies (1954-) developed the mathematical model used by the FBI to stock finger prints.
    Belgium has one of the lowest proportions of McDonald’s in the developed world.
    UNICEF report on child well-being in rich countries ranked Belgium as the best country for children's educational well-being.
    Tax levels in Belgium are among the highest in the world, with about 40% of gross earnings given up in tax for a single-income family. A study for 2005 showed that Belgium had the highest average income tax rate out of 30 OECD countries. Total taxation represents 45.6 % of the country's GDP. Inheritance tax can reach up to 80%. The Royal family alone receives 12 million € of tax-payers' money each year.

    The Belgian motorway system is the only man-made structure visible from the moon (at night, due to the lights all along the motorway network).
    Belgian Jesuit missionary Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688) founded the Observatory of Beijing. He was the secretary of the emperor of China Kang-Hi, for whom he also built 400 cannons. Verbiest is credited to have built what may have been the first steam powered car in about 1672.

      Nope, as Belgium was the second industrialized country in the world after GB. During the 19th century, it was the wealthiest country in the world, and eg. Liège was the second largest industrial center after London. So, 4th might depend on what you're looking. Those rankings don't mean much if you don't detail you reasoning, but well, why not? 4th seems decent. At that time, NL was loosing its colonies and was mostly unindustrialized, somewhat poor farmlands.

Belgium is a great and lovely country, and so do all of the other country's in the world. So why are you saying all of this? I think no country deserves it that people make such a video. Of course not everything can be great, but you are making everything negative. I hope the maker read this and understands that this isn't how a human should act. So please, I hope you understand me. 😭
    Greets of BELGIUM!

    to all non-Belgians who might be misguided: of course foreigners don't 'have to speak Dutch' in Flanders, the political structures are organised in Dutch

    Woow i have never seen something that stupid ... Belgium is a beautiful land and is maybe a little bit complicated and weird for outsiders but all the people who live there are super nice ! And the food is delicious, you don’t have to judge a country from what you hear ! I love Belgium 🖤💛❤️ 🇧🇪 oh yeah , we can not forget about the part that Belgium started Europe once and now the country is the capital of Europe ! 🇪🇺💙

    Then how come Belgium became and is a developed country ? How is it a comparatively more prosperous than huge majority of countries in world?
    How does it maintain its edge over other countries in this highly competitive world?
    They must be doing something extraordinarily intelligent despite such inherent complexities in local governance.

    We do not make Swiss chocolate. And we are most certainly not known for being boring or dumb. Fries are actually Belgian Fries, but the Americans during WW2 in the Ardennes called them French because it was in a French speaking part. What the heck? For the rest, yeah... spot on.

    Every country should be like this...and then they wouldn't have time to meddle in other countries affairs. Anyhow I liked Belgium when I was there and I love cycling, beer & chocolates.

      Indeed. Not bad but quite some factual errors (see above in this thread). Understandable if you know the author (Marcel Sel) is known as a fierce French-nationalist who is often very aggressive when flemish ask equal rights.

    Small detail: In Belgium, every year again, 12 Billion Euro (i.e. 2 000 Euro per person !) flows:
    - from the Northern region of Dutch-speaking Flanders
    - into the eternally jobless, green-communist-minded, French-speaking Walloon southern region.
    If ever someone wonders about the outcome of the next elections and why a government can not take shape anymore then: It's the EU on a smaller scale ...

    I’m Belgium and I hate that the world thinks it’s boring and I’m pissed at this video
    We are better than most countries we are bilingual
    We make sure people who can’t work get paid either way
    It is Belgian fries
    Belgian chocolate
    Belgian beer
    Well you’re Welkom world
    We are the center of Europe and we make sure everyone can communicate with us by speaking at least two languages
    I’m only 13 now and I already speak French Dutch and English
    Ask an American to speak anything but English and they won’t succeed
