- ‘For if a person fatigued with long and hard labour, or with a violent agitation of the mind, takes a good dish of chocolate, he shall perceive almost instantly that his faintness shall cease, and his strength shall be recovered’
The Cacao tree was first domesticated by the Olmecs in Mesoamerica, possibly as early as 1500 BC, and was then first encountered by Europeans in the 16th century, when it is said that the Aztec Emperor Montezuma welcomed Hernan Cortes into his dominion with a mysterious dark drink. Indeed, Chocolate was originally consumed as a drink, and was a cornerstone of Aztec life, whether used as currency or as part of religious rituals. Brought back by the conquistadors to Europe, Chocolate slowly spread through the continent, particularly among the ruling classes, up until the industrial revolution of the 19th century, when technical advancements allowed for chocolate to be made into a food, at a far lower cost. This paved the way for Quaker families, such as the Cadburys or the Frys, keen to find an alternative to alcohol, to make the snack available to the masses…
Tom and Dominic have partnered with @cadbury in celebration of their 200th year anniversary, to explore the story of how chocolate, from its Mesoamerican origins, became a British favourite.
Over the coming months, Cadbury will be announcing more plans for its 200th anniversary year, including ways that fans nationwide can get involved in the celebrations. For more information, visit: www.cadbury.co...
I cannot thank enough to the gods of podcast for these two. Is such a luxury to listen to smart people talking these days...
Definitely an endangered species
I thoroughly agree ! Rare and rarified ! To listen to anybody speak on a subject that isn't 'themselves' these days is so sooo refreshing .
Tom's intro accent reminded me of the exchange between King Arthur and the French soldiers in Monty Python and The Holy Grail 😆
Probably grew up on it
He's channelling countless British actors doing Hercule Poirot
😂
Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries!
@@Elitist20 I fart in your general direction.
We grew up in the 50’s about a mile or so away from the Bakers Cocoa Factory in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The aroma of cocoa would carry on the 2 days a week that they would bake it. So delightful.
10:25 I won't do it in an Italian accent - He said [breath] [Italian Accent] "eet seemeda mora" - I will. 😂
A 53min chocolate ad. And loved it. Next. Pot Noodle. 👍
Lucky to get sponsored by Cadbury, good episode too as usual.
Thanks Dabtican! We loved working with them on this 💜
People don't regard tea as erotic 🤣🤣 I bloody love this podcast
These guys are so good at what they do
I do love your episodes, all of them. Educational and very entertaining!! I mostly catch them via podcasts, but I’m here to tweak your comments on Quakers. We are all considered clergy, actually-no laity! The idea is that we all have some sort of ministry to contribute, sometimes officially “minuted” to do so, but always under girding our daily lives and actions.
Very interesting -- and impressive.
Just returned from Europe with a "stash" of Cadbury chocolate in my luggage!! Loads of Daily Milk and Flakes...the Best. Though Swiss choc is a close second. Best of all...I simply love these two chaps for such interesting, intelligent and amusing content.
As they used to say in the late 90s... Sweet!
Chocolate: Start your day off with a bang!
Very entertaining. FYI Cadbury chocolate Easter eggs are still very popular in the US.
The _Whizzo Chocolate Company_ would definitely love to add powdered millipedes and the galls or livers of eels to complement their "Crunchy Frog" chocolate.
I think that idea has got legs.
Tom's French accent is excellent too
Brilliant! I'm off to the shops to stock up on Dairy Milk ...
We love this 😍💜
I remember seeing adverts for Iceland Moss cocoa in original versions of the magazines in which Dickens's Our Mutual Friend was serialised.
Loved this episode ❤🔥
Glad to find you again on RUclips!
Question: do you have a St. Patrick's Day episode?
They do, its from March 2022 on Apple podcasts
Wow, what a studio you got there
You can’t leave us on a cliff hanger for the Second Punic War, that’s barbarism
It's outragious behaviour.
Very poor behaviour indeed.
‘Allo ‘Allo vibes at the start!
In 2005 Starbucks had Chantico, a rich hot chocolate drink that sold as a six ounce shot like espresso. As soon as it became many people's favorite, they discontinued it. In my recall of the memoir of Casanova (1725-1798), this was his favorite breakfast drink as well.
I wont do it in an Italian accent.......proceeds to do an Italian accent 😂😂😂❤
If you ever get a chance to watch someone make their own chocolate from the harvested plant onwards, do it. It's absolutely nightmarish. A huge amount of work and time and a hundred ways to screw it up. Chocolate would still be for only the very rich today without the industrialization of it's manufacture.
I've been to the Ghirardelli factory and it's really a process that needs machines, it's too intense.
As a grade schooler in Pennsylvania we went on a class tour of Hershey's chocolate factory (apologies Cadbury). For a 7-year-old that was a pretty magical experience. That was in the early 70s, and soon afterwards they discontinued those tours due to industrial espionage. Very Willy Wonka-esq.
Love you both.
Fan of the show from New York here... It's actually a less cut-and-dry reason for the foul taste in American chocolate. And it has to do with a strange phenomenon regarding the visceral reaction to a chemical called: "butyric acid." This is a chemical used in the processing of solid chocolate in America (but not in European chocolate). In short, if you are exposed to this taste as a small child--- then you will not notice it. However, if you first taste this chemical beyond early childhood... then it'll remind you of vomit. Similar things can be said of children never getting exposed to other strong scents/tastes such as cigarette smoke, fish, etc. (those with smoking parents won't mind the smell... but others will absolutely hate it)
Monty Phyton had a sketch about a chocolate selection, and when Tom mentioned the ancient medicines like eels worth and liver covered in chocolate, reminded me of Phytons cockroach 🪳 whisp. Fantastic podcast
I recommend the song ‘Chocolate Wings’ by Bent.
It can be Cadbury's chocolate as in 's that denotes the chocolate belongs to Cadbury . As in Tom Holland's book .
Say what you like but Hershey's can be had with fruit, nuts, and many other delicious ingredients... but not Lichen.
Love the show guys. Hanging on every episode from the tax dodging U.S.
Loved this episode people.
Dammit, now I have to go buy some chocolates 😆
Take it easy on Adams and Jefferson.......other than that - delightful as usual. Jefferson as wrong on most things? ....worthy of an episode.
EXCELLENT!!
I love fake accents in a foreign language to mimic the original language, perfect comic relief.
Loved this, love chocolate...
I learned that chocolate arrived in Ireland via ships from Norway. Captained by Norwegian Forest kitties, crewed by tabby cats.
Can't we just be happy that it did arrive? 😂
Super interesting stuff, especially Bourneville part for me. Cadbury is not my favourite, far too sweet. Chocolate with alcohol in it is a nice combination and dark chocolate with chilli 🌶
You guys only did ONE episode on the first world war, will there be more?
Tcho is a company in California and makes amazing chocolate.
Why is this removed from Google podcasts?
Because google podcasts is being wound up, in favour of RUclips
These guys are the bizz.
My God, it's Max Von Sydow!⚰️
The ironic thing is that Cadbury have removed most of the cacao from their "chocolate". I left the UK in 2006 and it was OK, a little sweet and had a poor texture. Went back recently and it was terrible. And expensive.
A comment about the tedious, ubiquitous and misogynistic ‘woman having orgasmic response to eating chocolate made by a man’ in adverts (Flake, Lindt and others) would have been interesting. But I suppose Cadbury would object to that discussion.
Meanwhile Nutella is taking puerto rico by storm
I LOVE MOUNDS BARS COCONUT COVERED IN DARK CHOCOLATE, I LOVE REESES' PEANUT BUTTER CUPS COVERED IN MILK CHOCOLATE, I LOVE BUTTERFINGERS, BRITTLE COVERED IN DARK CHOCOLATE AND I LOVE CHUNKYS, MILK CHOCOLATE, RAISINS AND PEANUTS ALL MIXED TOGETHER. GO USA!!!!
Tillamook Cheese!
You haven't lived!
You said that Quakers shared an entrepreneurial spirit (borne from necessity) along with Jews and… Armenians???? I didn’t know the latter were around in Victorian Britain?
Hang on... Jefferson was Cornish?
Listen to the episodes on the American War of Independence
Will do! This needs an explanation.
Good stuff gents.
I'd love to try the original drink as I only drink coffee black, espresso if I can get it, so can do without sugar and milk. Would be a good comparison, may the best bean win.
Couple of things I've heard but not sure how true. The success of Quaker origin 'refreshment' companies in the UK was largely because in the days before food legislation, Quakers were one of the few groups of people who were trusted not to cut corners for profit.
The slight vomit flavo(u)r of US chocolate comes from a method of production used during WW2. People got used to it so it stayed the same.
Vomit flavor? Not Hersheys.
@@dogeared100 Slight.
It's the butyric acid in it apparently, which actually is present in vomit.
Love the concepts they come up with though. We need more peanut butter and chocolate products in the UK IMO it works well.
Noooooo! They’ll try to cancel chocolate now!!!
Yeah, some folks lie awake at night mortified by the idea that somewhere someone might be enjoying themselves.
Tom’s posture needs fixing
Hate the Hershey hate, Love the show but where you get off dissing my favorite chocolate bar like that!
All the Cadbury Chocolate in the US was made by Hershey, then Cadbury was bought by US giant Kraft. That wasn't popular in the UK.
The policeman out of ello ello
I'm offended by your libelous comments on cheese in the United States.
Vermont and New York both produce excellent sharp cheeses.
Otherwise I enjoy hearing you discuss Britains decline, I enjoy it a great deal.
Here here.
I love cadburys chocolate
the cadbury flake was inspired by my work ethic.
“Green and Black” is making the best organic Dutch processed dark chocolate powder right now. Their bars suck and there are much better organic bars with much less sugar or sugar like stuff like Stevia et al. As someone beaten with English Quaker “purity” (hard to tell between the contextual story telling lol) truth seeker, I can not tell a lie . . . One can only hope . . . hours of self loathing to come.
Does the UK have good chocolate? Cadbury is painfully sweet. Anything of real quality?
American Chocolate is an acquired taste .... just like Haggis.
To Europeans it smells of vomit!
Harsh
As an American I just can't tell the difference.

First we will talk about the history of chocolate in Meso America starting with the Olmecs. I saw a head in the British museum. On to the Spanish and what they wrote. WTH.
