There are companies that do this anyway but the lure of a fairly hefty sum of money means some companies will overlook this in favour of simply taking anyone who has a big enough bank account. And if someone gets turned down by the more discerning agencies then the lure is that they’ll just go to the more unscrupulous places and hand over the money anyway. I’m a scuba diver myself who’s training for cave diving. “A bit of a head scratcher” when talking about the yaks and reduction of helicopters. No, no tf it is not a head scratcher. Whoever wrote the script for this video is absolutely apart of the problem. Everest is not your yearly vacation destination, it is not where you go to base camp to spend a week when you want to experience the wilderness. And unless youre fully committed to devoting every second of your time to climbing preparation (no lounging on couches and sipping tea while having a laugh) or fully devoted to the support system of those climbers, then you don’t freaking belong at base camp. The reversion to yaks makes perfect sense, the issue is that there is too many people on the mountain and too many of those people are completely care free. It is that simple, there is too many people. If you have an issue with traveling by yak and were expecting a helicopter transport so you can get an easy ride all the way to base camp, then you don’t belong on the mountain in the first place. The trek to base camp with all your tents, food and water, and climbing gear or materials has stood as a proving ground for decades. If you have an issue with doing that trek the “old fashioned way”, then you don’t belong on the mountain.

Certified summiting of three other 7,000+ meter peaks (of which there are dozens in the Himalayas) before you even get to go to Everest. It would spread around the work for guides and benefits to the local economy away from that one mountain (Everest), and it would reduce crowding and accidents on Everest because only proven, tried and tested climbers would get to even be there. The 'mystique' of summiting Everest would go back to climbers who have earned it by previous hard mountaineering experience and previous support to the local economy.
To address trash issues, they should build permanent, minimal housing (Yurts of wood stone) with heads, cooking gas etc. at each camp to reduce disposable waste. Everyone pays use fee. 1/3 of climb tickets go to high bidder, 1/10 to lottery and the rest are waiting list. Tickets are non-transferable at normal price. The high-bidder money goes toward cleanup, construction/accommodations and Sherpa fund.

They should have a limited Permit Draw program for each season for say 100 permits. Come up with a system to give preference points to verified experienced climbers. It shouldn't be about how much money you have to spend, but how much dedication and experience you bring to the team/endeavor.
It use to be that way. You couldn't step foot on Everest without having climbed at least three 8000ers before applying for a permit. The government changed that rule a few years ago. A lot of experienced climbers are still upset about it. I don't blame them either.

Better idea would be to police the agencies that offer the trips, ensuring that they are vetting prospective climbers for suitability and experience with challenging climbs.

Their actually is a refundable deposit for packing out your trash. Most climbers just consider it part of the climbing fee and leave their tradh
I've been thinking about the rubbish problem. I think they should make a rule that every person must hand in 5 kg worth of trash on their way out. If they don't hand in trash, they will be fined. It doesn't matter if someone else picked up the trash for you, as long as you hand it in. If your whole team hands in a dead body, then you will all be exempt. @@cowardlylion9947 People have been saying it for years even mountaineers and sherpas have been saying it. Money rules there and the people taking the money have no idea what was actually going on the mountain.
I agree. There was a rule in place before that you had to have climbed at least 3 other 8000ers before applying for a permit to step on Everest. Not use when they changed it but they are regretting it now.
Supposedly 478 permits were given out in 2023 - I wonder how many were actually used...
Bottom line is the ONLY people who have the funds to do stuff like this are rich people. People who don't care about anyone but themselves. They should close the mountain all together
Proof that rich people poop 💩 too.
...as Prince said, 'FOREVER is a mighty long time'. Please stop abusing this poor word, "for the near future" contains enough weight
We all have to start somewhere. This looks looks a good start for Everest.
Tourists in line to climb are just damned fools
