One thing that doesn't make for a happy retirement is a retired husband who has no interest in anything and rarely leaves the house. I am 72 and still working and plan to continue as long as I am able. Retiring under these circumstances is too depressing to even consider.

40 now, and everything is paid for. Fortunately, I had a college economics teacher who taught me a lesson when I was 18 years old. That lesson was: you can't buy something else for every purchase you make. Having multiple sources of income is prudent, as is living within your means. I have a 13-year-old vehicle because it is all I need, I like it, and I can do whatever I want with it. My net worth is $4 million, and I can pay my bills without stress, but I don't live like I have that. I have no complaints.

I fully agree; I'm 56 years old and recently retired with approximately 1.2 million in outside retirement funds, no debt, and very few dollars in retirement funds in comparison to my portfolio balance over the last three years. To be honest, the financial advisor's role can only be ignored, not dismissed. Therefore do your research to get a reputable one and that should be any individuals main route into the market.

I think the retirement crisis will get even worse. A lot of people can’t save because of low paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates. And now that home ownership is out of reach for middle class Americans, they won’t have a house to retire with either.

Yes, a good number of folks are raking in huge 6 figure gains in this downtrend, but such strategies are mostly successfully executed by folks with in depth market knowledge, And it also all depends on how long you're willing to hold for, stocks might likely tank further, but making serious gains in this downtrend wouldn't be a problem if you're a pro.

But here's the rub...if you hate your job there's a good chance you will hate retirement. People who are unhappy when young are generally unhappy when old. The only difference is the person's mind. Some people have learned how to be happy in almost all circumstances. My bet is 99% would look at my life and would absolutely hate it, think it insane. They would be miserable. So I don't see the point about what some people like or dislike about retirement...or anything else.

I find that there are people who have been in a management position (as an example) for most of their lives with 70+ hours per week. Pressure is common and often. As a result , they don't know how to relax. They haven't given time to develop hobbies or other activities while they were working, all they know is their job, and the the communication skills they do have are suited for peers or subordinates, not their wives. Retirement may as well be as foreign to them as living on another planet.

The only excuse I can relate to for early retirement is lack of adequate money. You need planing for money that you will need before you retire . Lack of adequate money combined with old ages is recipe for hardship and depression. Work till you know you will be o.k with money.
We are in a age that retirement especially early retirement is much easier than when our parents retired. There are a lot to do in life than working for someone. You could always find some charity work few hour a week like teaching someone something you know . Then look after your health by doing some activity you like could be as simple as walking a couple of miles every day. Read books soon you will find not enough time to do more. Find good movies to watch every day and travel to far away places at least one a year. Remember, retirement is part of life once you underestimate this you will enjoy it more I’d it is well planed. Good luck.

People first off don't listen to a young girl telling you how to retire i. First step before retirement
Pay off all debt. Have enough cushion in checking account. Invest in conservative funds
CDs etc. Might want to talk to a fiduciary about the correct investment choices. Hope this helps

You provide factual and useful information. Given your apparent age, for you to talk about retirement is like a priest discussing best methods learned from Kama Sutra. Your presentation is more like a class on Retirement 101 rather than someone who is talking about something that is personally meaningful. Still, good info. Thanks.
