Have the right people, at the right place, at the right time, with the right tools, and then let them work. The workers are there to produce value, management is only there to facilitate that work. On the whole "milking the cow" thing, sadly that's how business works. Long-term health is not important, it's what can you show the shareholders at the next announcement. There's no use doing something that will benefit the game in 2-5 years and not now, because then you have nothing to show at the next meeting. Also, if your idea succeeds, you probably won't be in that position any more and you've just handed a win to the guy that took your job. It's why politicians here in the US don't do anything real to address our problems and instead slap on quick fixes like bandages on sucking chest wounds. CEOs absolutely have agency in corporate affairs. They are THE boss. I also agree that they have a vague idea of what the employees are doing but have no idea what the employees actually do (the processes, time involved, the amount of employees/specific talents necessary to do the process). I’ve seen it firsthand even in small businesses. They can’t even make a schedule which I guess is why most usually hire a secretary to do it. Most of them are just guys with money and an idea to grow it but don’t know how to do the idea so they usually partner with a friend that does, then hire people to do everything, and once they are big enough they cut the other guy out and sometimes sell the company and keep 100% since they removed the partner.

I don't think it will really matter. As just some random player, from time to time, I can say that, prior to this announcement, I had no idea who held the position she is vacating, and I think she is a role above any possible cutoff point where they might be a fan/participant AND corporate component. The masters of Hasbro, till all are one, don't take their own products home, and use them as a consumer; they produce them to sell them, to make a profit, and that's their job, so I don't expect anyone who gets the job to suddenly be a devoted player, who also happens to work there, and willing to risk that promotion to try and persuade Hasbro from just maximizing profits, as their job is profiting off of Magic, and D&D; not playing, and enjoying the game(s). It might be nice for that person to have e such caring, but then I feel like that person wouldn't have climbed so high in that environment.
My only hmmm point with this, honestly, is the lack of a replacement already bring planned. It's fine that she is stepping down, whether to get poached to another job, retire off of her perks, or just focus on something else, and it's great that it appears to have been amicable; they didn't shit-can her for Markov Manor, or the $1,000 boxes of Reserve List proxies, but I feel like it could have been "hey, I'm considering leaving, so we should probably promote/hire a new body, while I wrap up my time here, enabling a smooth transition", and the fact that they didn't; that even her peaceful departure seems to be happening in a time frame where they hadn't already picked someone else, and might not have that person prior to her last day, is a little bit odd, especially on corporate stuff, where they don't like surprises. I don't think it will be a problem; that they will suffer for her absence, or we will notice it, or her replacement, but still a little bit odd.

I've been developing a TCG for the last 5 years called Kingdoms TCG. A project born from my passion for TCG's having grown up playing them and then continuing to play them into adulthood paired with wanting to be a game designer. The game has a MTG vibe to it in that you have a commander (we call them royals), 2 actually, any legendary creature (we call them heroes) and/or planes walker (we call them lords). Separate land deck. 2 draws per turn. Hearthstone combat but there's a second zone where u can keep units safe (called ur kingdom), and face is only an option if your unsafe units are all tapped (or card effects, keywords ect.). I've been doing an open beta in my local area since last July. Nearly all the art is local to my city. Every set I release has serialized product in it. Current pull rate is 1 in 10 packs. That obv wont stay that low forever but my manufacturer can scale up to 9999 per card in a set. I see this as its own reserve list in a way, but I also do really like the idea of doing one time arts, and one time borders, ect. I recently released a 1 of 1 steamboat willie card to be found in the most recent set. My philosophy is also that people shouldn't have to spend more than like $60-100 bucks on singles to build a deck, because no individual card should be worth more than a buck or 2, unless you want it to. Look it even rhymes. That's a good slogan. Kingdoms TCG - Cause no 1 card should be worth more than a buck or 2, unless you want it to! Anyway, vote me for CEO! Oh wait, I am the CEO. Or well, I'm soul proprietor. Uh...? Kickstarter soon! Well soonish. Kinda like when u see a poster for a movie for the first time soon. Like a year-ish.

From an outside perspective she did a great job on paper, WotC made record profits for the otherwise struggling company and there was no known beef. So they'll probably look for someone similiar or more aggressive next. I believe she was "underpaid" at least compared to her male counterpart before her, maybe that was a factor. Or anything else happened, we may never know
I do think CEOs can have great impact, not so much on the product side of things but by shaping a companies work culture and environment. How they use that ability is a different matter entirely.

Went from the best job I ever had to arguably the worst almost immediately. The whole vibe at every level of leadership changed, supervisors started pressuring us to break the law to meet our sales goals, all of our systems stopped working because they laid off the people who maintained them, impossible goals were implemented from top to bottom, customer complaints about being scammed by sales shot through the roof, etc. It depends on who the replacement is, but this can make a very big difference.

      @JD-gk7eh 4 месяца назад +1

@@wesleywyndam-pryce5305 Collectability very much has everything to do with scarcity and monetary vale. Like, what are you smoking? Things become collectable and thus valuable because they are rare, often because people did not keep them because no one though they'd be wanted. A standard edition of Monopoly will never be collectible because anyone with $20 (or whatever MSRP is) has been able to get one anywhere for 70 years. Baseball cards from the 1950s? Not rare at the time--they were everywhere. But no one saved them and they became rare. Baseball cards of the 1990s? Not rare then, not rare now because they were kept.
What you are complaining about is that these are also game pieces, not just collectibles. That's a different argument. But arguing that things can be collectible when they're commonplace and cheap is just not how anything that's been prized as a collectible has ever worked.

Also I'm glad you point out the truthiness of this - how the CEO's get the credit for work other people do. The only "bigger" organization I can think of where the owners and upper management are actually involved are large RUclips channels like Linus Tech Tips (whether you agree with their practices etc or not). And that's still small on the corporate scale considering LMG has around 100 employees. For frame of reference, my first actual job was at a McDonald's and we had upwards of 150 staff, and the store manager was known to occasionally cover the till, flip burgers, and do whatever else needed to be done right beside the other staff if he was on shift. He didn't just park himself in the office and let other staff do everything, even though most times there were enough people on shift.
I really hope they get someone who's actually familiar with the major properties (Magic, D&D, etc) as president instead of someone who just knows how to run a business, because CEOs of THAT nature are a dime a dozen, but CEOs that actually understand how the general public see the business and what they offer are much rarer - I might even suggest Mythic Rare. So giving us someone like Forsythe I think would be much better for the company than some random "all I know is business" outsider.

The CEO doesn't matter usually, but it IS a good indicator of the direction the company is taking under their umbrella. Cynthia Williams had a big digital gaming and distribution background, and WotC had a period of targeting digital markets and gaming under her reign. Now that MTGA is established (and probably no longer in a growth period), digital distribution has its established pipeline as you noted, BG3 is out, and OneDND has basically flopped; the company is probably steering in a new direction. The background and history of the next CEO will likewise be a big indicator of where they want to take the company going forward.
A lot of the direction for Magic specifically is definitely a continuation of Chris Cocks' decisions though (FIRE, booster fun, Universe Beyond all products under his run as CEO for better or worse), and I can only pray that losing Hasbro shareholders over 3 billion dollars on the EOne disaster is enough to have the board of directors on his ass too.

My husband has a high school friend who is a CEO and that CEO absolutely thinks that he is the be all and end all of the company and it wouldn't survive without him at the helm. I do think the quality of the product produced by us workers saves their butt most of the time. But CEOs think very highly of what they do.

broadly speaking, the executive management are in charge of the long term development of their companies. they are enacting policies that affect production in generally the five year window. Cynthia was definitely someone who made decisions that led to the crazy amount of MTG releases in the last few years

a CEO works for the shareholders, he administrate the company to ensure the profit percentage the shareholders want/need. So he is needed to read the markets and trends to ensure the company grows. He is the one who aproves new projects (like Baldur's Gate 3) measuring how much will they win and in what span of time, but they are not about creating or proposing stuff. The President does propose new stuff he develops with his team (he looks for oportunities inside their company structure and product) and supervise that the money they get from the company for new projects gets used in the time and form proposed when they got their approval..... The problem here is that Hasbro and WotC make products with different models, but Hasbro keeps trying to make Wizards works like other "games" in the volume oriented form, not in the quality one

It doesn't matter what sort of company WotC says it is, because it is owned by Hasbro and Hasbro has long since stopped being a game/toy company and become a Line Go Up company. It is in the business of making Line Go Up, and anything it does in the interim is just a matter of momentary strategy

#PLEASENTKENOBIFORCEO !!! Those three points are absolutely spot on! Never cared for the UN sets, but was not only unnecessary to make them black bordered, but also confusing. WH40K was such a banger, and they missed a big chance to milk the right cow there, with a universe that for flavour and aesthetic has proven to be one of the best for a crossover with MtG. And the reserve list: why can´t it be just about the art? I respect that collectors-investor want to maintain the value of those old prints, but why that has to come to the cost of gatekeeping cards as whole? MtG is now over 30 years old, always changing, just like the world around. WotC please, listen to the people, to your player base.

Y'know i think i read somewhere that Chris C0cx takes part in a dnd campaign... Wether or not it has to do with a genuine interest in the game, or for "relatability" to the consumer of the fine product is debatable- but I'm sure we can imagine how his play session and passion looks. I mention this because kenobi said that even if it is an entusiast and player of WotC product, it may be a surface level public image (check me out im a cool gamer just like you! and love that MtG!©) that they want to be perceived as.
Regardless. I think that there will be some possible changes with this news, but it wont be as earth-shattering or immediate as we'd want. I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

One of many problems have left. We are at a point that the entire leadership needs to be replaced into hasbro. The failings of hasbro have affected WoTC by changing the way to earn money and the metrics they wanted which has become hostile to most of the customers. I would say I am done buying until they fix shit....BUT I haven't purchased shit for a while and don't need see anything changing unless they crash and burn.

Memes aside, I agree with the bleak outlook - CEOs are overpaid and overhyped. Stephanie Sterling has put me on the path of calling for the removal of the executive class.
They're all earning so much money that they can retire without a bonus, give half of their yearly salary to charity, and live comfortably (if not in minor luxury) for decades and still be millionaires at the end of it.
    Thats fucked.
