- Climbing its way through the Mercantour National Park, at 24km in length the Col de la Bonette really is an ascent that needs absolute respect right from the start. Pacing, pacing, pacing should be circulating in your head like a broken record throughout, especially as the steepest gradients up to 15% come in the final kilometre.
Flashback to the summer of 2013 and the Bonette gave me many a sleepless night as I prepared for ‘Les Alpes’ a non-stop journey from Évian-les-Bains to Nice across the Alps. The fact that this monster rises up to 2,802 metres above sea level and claims to be the highest road pass in Europe is one thing, but I was going to hit it with 11 mountains and over 450km in the legs so on that occasion the word ‘daunting’ didn’t quite do justice to how my mind and stomach were feeling at the time. As I made it to the summit I could feel an overwhelming sense of fulfillment surge through my whole body, the pain disappeared and despite everything I felt more alive than ever. That’s the true power of the Bonette and the reason why I love this climb so much.
I hope this video helps you explore your own limits and adds to your mountain memories now and in the future.
Start: Jausiers
Length: 24km
Summit: 2,802m
Elevation gain: 1,589m
Average gradient: 6.6%
Max gradient: 15%

Another great video. Col de la Bonette. One of my favourite mountain. Climbed it two years ago along with the col d'Angel and the col'Izoard. Great place to cycle.
Stunning
Rode this on Saturday, great to stick to a rhythm as you say. There was a cafe just before the forested section and one near the fort, which may just be open in summer. We also rode Izoard and Agnel the next day. Great climbs, thanks for the videos.
Seriously luv these vidz from Mike: I'm gonna get to these places one day! Thanks !!! ;)
Thanks Lee! You're in for a treat when you do ride these peaks!! Good luck. Mike
Great Video
Thanks guys!

Who’s here in 2024 for TdF Stage 19?
These videos are GREAT but they could be GREATER if they were longer. Fantastic job....when's the 15 min. Extended version?
Hi Rob, it's a tricky balancing act to be honest. I'd like to make much longer videos but such is the modern world everyone is time crunched so we wanted to bring them to life in bite size episodes to hopefully appeal to a busy lifestyle. We take all feedback on board so let's see what happens down the road. Thanks for your good comments of support. Mike
Thanks for the video! Rode up to the cime during 2013 Haute Route Alps. No wonder it was so tough at the top - 15%!
Incredible memories. My Avatar is at the top.
Ahh dreaming again of tackling another great climb..Mike my list is getting longer.. :)
Great work again Col Collective.. Thank you
Bonne explication , l'effet de manque d'air a partir de 2000m. plus difficile a décrire . Merci A+ .... 11:27, le jeudi 8 septembre 2022 "CHECK" .
I really love this video. Way too short though.
I did this ride in 2008, 2010 and august 2015. The coming slope percentage and remaining kilometers are given every kilometer. There is a natural resting spot almost exactly midway. The restaurant-bar-cafe "halte 2000". You can order a double coffee and refill your bottles. This is my routine.
Watching your videos and this one ... what a motivation to go back better prepared next year. Thank you.
+Philippe Sarrazin Thanks so much for your appreciation Philippe. Hope to see you out on the road someday! Ride safe, Mike
Great images. Did it in September 1999. Sun at the bottom and really cold and foggy at the Cime de la Bonnette. Was there for one week on vacation and did several other passes in that region that year. Col de Vars, Col de Larche, Col d'Allos, Col de la Cayolle, Col d'Angel and the Col d'Izoard. Also did my third climbing of Alpe d'Huez.
This climb. It has broken many pros all while giving them breath taking views. Great camera work showing the Bonette's beauty. I love all of your videos on the famous climbs in cycling. I also hate you because it makes me want to ride them so much but I'm over in the US..... One day. One day I will travel there and ride these climbs!
Hi Brian, I like our love-hate relationship! ;-) If we can help make your trip happen we're always happy to help advise. Stay safe and thanks for your support. Mike
Cotty is a legend! Another masterpiece by the coll Colective
Another epic video... filming..editing...everything. Please teach me a thing or 2 about Adobe Premiere for my RUclips channel -- LOL . Mike, it must be so fun getting to watch playback of this footage of yourself climbing and experiencing these epic mountains. As a fellow vegan, I'd love to go riding with you if you are ever in So Cal... there is a "big" climb here in our local mountains up to Mount Baldy (around 1500m of elevation gain), I think you'd dig it!
Thanks Drew! Would love to bring some of your mountains to life one day!!
Cycling is an art and watching this one painted one of the most beautiful pictures...awesome work by the Col Collective team.... Keep amazing us with these videos... I will surly be ticking all these mountains off my biking list one day...Cheers!!!
Thank you Rahul. We hope our videos help you make that tick list even shorter this year. Ride safe and enjoy!
I am actually struggling for superlatives. Camera work, music, and Mike's excellent commentary. Wow! Take a bow, Sir.
great video :) thank you for this
How come there is always so little traffic in your videos. Are you starting really early in the morning? (Great inspirational video again by the way!)
Magnificent video! A shout out from Thailand :)
Thank you for your support! :-)
Beautifully shot, scripted and organized. A wonderful inspiration for all of us!
Thank you Wayne!
Folks, if you want to get a real insight to the Bonette, I would recommend reading "Higher Calling" by Max Leonard. A superb book, that really whets the appetite for a visit.
Incredible issn't it? Looks like you had a better view than me at the top, which was just cloud!
Another awesome video...that climb looks brutal. Does the altitude not effect you when the climb is that high? I'm yet to experience being above 1000m.
Hi Andrew, glad to hear you're enjoying our videos! Yes, when you get into the higher mountains +2000m elevation that's when you really feel the altitude difference. The great thing is there's no rush, take your time, enjoy the views and savour the moment. Ride safe. Mike
Awesome thanks Mike! I'll be in France this summer and don't intend being off my bike, epic trip! Cheers!
Wonderful all!. Thanks for making us travel by bike
Ricardo Rosales You are very welcome Ricardo!

I've done it on 21.09.2023 on a MTB. I've really enjoy it. The weather was perfect, great views, light traffic. No wind, used just the cycling t-shirt.
Super cool!!!!!
Thanks Mike, as ever a beautifully shot video of what looks like an awesome climb!

lautoka63 Thank you! :-)
Another wonderful video. Love them all.
Climbed this 2 weeks ago. Thunder and rain! But it is amazing. Huge favourite in every sense.
Whooooaaaa! Bonette is an achievement in itself, with thunder and rain you’ve earned pure hero status! Very well done 👏🏼
one of the best youtube channel great work
what a spectacular road to ride
Whats the music used in this video?
Sweet climb!
Also, what wheelset are you using there?
Glad you enjoyed it, the Bonette is an absolute beauty! I was riding on the CC40C wheelset from Mavic. All the best. Mike
Great, as always! :)
Oh Crap. Doing Ventoux from Nice in July. Now seen this, (got to do) I am going to be knackered.
Ha! Definitely needs adding to your trip! :-)
Mike Cotty Would say thanks but.... ridewithgps.com/routes/7072395 Also Izoard but had to hide from other riders. Great vids by the way. If you do next time and want a few fat, old blokes sweating behind you, join us.
I was planning on doing pico de veleta in the sierra nevada its 3384m. I thought this was the highest road in Europe. Which one should I be doing ?
Hi James, Pico de Veleta is higher at 3384m but it's a dead end. The Bonette claims to be the highest road pass. Which should you be doing? That's easy to answer.....both :-) Good luck!!
The Col Collective it would be good to see a rece video before I do Pico de Veleta.....hint hint !
Inspirational Mike...when are you going to tackle some of the great climbs in California and Hawaii
We've done a few from California.....Hawaii is still a dream. One day I hope!
Mike I guess you will just have to slum it in Europe until then...LoL...I know you appreciate what you've got
