    Let's not kid ourselves: Starling Games probably already had several expansions to this lined up when they came up with the original concept for Farshore. They are milking the Everdell cow until it drops dead.

      This such an important oversight in so many DT reviews. Especially since many of their games are given to them, it feels like a disservice to the viewer.

    It would’ve been cool if they went more of the Smallworld Underworld route. Very similar but all cards are different and maybe even some cards combinable with Everdell.
    As it is, the game seems cool. I’ll probably get it at some point just because I am a huge Everdell fan and would like to have everything in the world but I’m not in a rush to pick it up.

    My son (who is out of country for a year, so will have to wait to play this with him), happened to find a new friend that has quite a a few board games… and brought out this one for them to play. My son REALLY likes it and wants us to get it/keep an eye out for it. (We do have Everdell and 2 expansions). Maybe the price will go down after another year, cause that is pricey! Well I really love the everdell world! So even though it’s basically the same with some minor changes, I decided to get it. And I think this will definitely be easier to teach to new players, than the original. If they enjoy this, and develop strategies on their own, it will make it so much easier to upgrade their experience to the original. It’s also thematically similar to real life, as new comers come to Everdell they first probably come to farshore and as they get to know the lay of the land, they move onto the the great city of Everdell below the great evertree.

    I've seen this being advertised lately and had just assumed it was a completely new design set in the world of Everdell like the new Expeditions is to Scythe. I did not expect them to take Everdell in the 'Ticket to Ride' or 'Welcome To...' direction with a line of games using the same design but with a few small tweaks here and there.
    This looks good but it also looks like an Everdell 2E, a total replacement for the base game at retail. If they're going to continue printing Everdell alongside Farshore, I'm not sure how to feel about this. Is it simply a streamlined version intended for new players to buy over Everdell as Zee mentioned? Or are they hoping people who spent hundreds on Everdell with expansions will now spend even more to get back to a more playable base experience like Camilla mentioned, because the huge collection is too much work to sort through and play? It's crazy now that even individual games promote a cycle of acquisition followed by culling!

    • @revimfadli4666
      @revimfadli4666 11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, if anything, it might be better for an "Everdell with some tweaks" game to have a more flexible "free critter" mechanic(like the one in Newleaf, where it applies to a category rather than specific critters) from the get-go
      Edit: apparently the anchor does that. Now I'm interested

    My biggest gripe with everdell was having to dig through the deck looking for specific cards (often amounting merely to an exercise in frustration). The anchors mechanism seems to fix this, so I'm very much looking forward to trying out farshore. Thanks for the review.

  • @LeeKenshin7
    @LeeKenshin7 11 месяцев назад +4

    As one who owns the Complete Big Box edition, this was also a huge disappointment and miss for me. I will be implementing the stacked meadow rule (I also separate the critter and building cards and deal them into two separate rows in the meadow and allow players to draw from either stacks) though. The anchor mechanism is found in New Leaf, my second favorite expansion, with the golden leaf tokens. Farshore is a good starting point for those new to the Everdell universe though. I can see Starling Games milking this with expansions, instead of branching out in the universe, until it becomes another big box 😂 I'm actually glad I can pass on this one and play what I have without the FOMO.

  • @JohnWbechtel2

    This is basically Everdell with aspects of Bellfaire (card type -- rather than card name -- goals) and Newleaf (the limited ability to play matching type cards for free). All are welcome changes, but there is pretty much no reason to get this if you already have the OG. Just house rule the card stacking in the meadow and you're golden.

    • @Frankie-the-Tankie
      @Frankie-the-Tankie 11 месяцев назад

      Don't forget about the "explore / map tokens" and the weather cards that change the conditions from Spinecrest. The game feels like Everdell - The Greatest Hits which is good for people who just want one box but not for anyone already invested in the OG game.

      Maybe give everyone 1 or 2 round doors at the start of the game to be used the same way as the new anchors, and they'd cover up the spot on the building card as usual so that even if that building's matching critter showed up later on, they couldn't play it for free because they already got a freebie with that building.

    I’m actually okay with “simplified” versions of heavier games. I have both Funfair and Unfair, and typically use Funfair as a way to ease folks into Unfair (eventually) - I have different gaming groups all at different levels, so having options of complexity is nice.
    But Farshore seems way too identical to Everdell to warrant adding it to my collection. I feel as though Everdell is already pretty simple, I don’t see how Farshore could simplify that or standout from it enough to have both.

    I read a design diary about this game and they are not planning on expansions for this game from what they said.
    They did say that there is a plan for three more standalone games that represent different points of a compass. The next game they mentioned is said to have very different mechanics and be a little heavier in complexity. Whether that’s a good thing or not, only time will tell.

    Everdell but more forgiving and with more direction for new players. On one hand that’s probably a better deal because I’ve introduced Everdell to multiple people and that first game is very tough for them. So this game definitely fixes that in a lot of ways. I will say though usually by the end of that first game it clicks for people and they see how rewarding it is to build that tableau when at first it seemed impossible. That challenge and build up really makes the game sing in my opinion. This is a huge pass for me, but can see people coming into the system for the first time loving it.

      I have a friend who has played Everdell 3 times now, and still doesn’t really know what to do. Heck it took him 7 games just to understand dominion, and now he’s much better at dominion. This will be a big help for him. Remember every tree grows up at their own pace. This game will assist the slower trees. I’m sure everyone crosses paths with a slower tree, so what do you do? Do you never play Everdell with them again Simply because they still can’t grasp the game enough to strategize after 3 games? Or do play several more games that might end up frustrating both of you, because it ends up too complex for them to strategize for themselves? Or better yet do you get a more streamlined version and see if that’s easier for them and then move them on to the deep end of Everdell once they have learned to swim well in the smaller pool of farshore? That’s what this is for. To introduce Everdell to less experienced players.

    I got Everdell, played it a few times, and sold it. I feel like this new edition fixes some things I had problems with, most notably, feeling "stuck" if you couldn't fish out the cards you need for goals etc. Also the tree was just laughably impractical. Also, once I realized how many expansions there were going to be, I felt I didn't like the game enough to justify getting invested. I DID preorder this reimplementation because I feel it will be a better experience. And yes, it was too expensive but it has lots of cool pieces.

      Are the components higher quality, though? The base Everdell components were quite good and they had a couple component gripes for Farshore in this review.

    Too expensive for essentially an Everdell clone, I can't give extra credit for rinse repeat. How is that price justified? It's not accessible as a game if the price is so high that it's way too much for its target market. Remember $75 is DISCOUNTED price. I'd drop a mark for that.

      I thought that DiceTower used to be in the camp of we don't talk about the price vs components, that seems to no longer be the case.....I'm not (yet) convinced that the price of a boardgame should change it's "score".

      @@klawless It's a retail product, the price always matters.

      @@PRC533 I do agree that the price matters just not to the score of a game. Specifically Ol'mate from The Broken Meeple's suggestion the high price tag deserved it to be docked a point. I guess the difference is my personal scoring of a game is based solely on the play of the game (how much enjoyment/fun was had). The value (or lack) of the product only has a loose bond to each other.

    is this a sponsored review? because it surely looks like one. This game is just another Everdell, so I don`t get why these high scores

    I just don’t get the Everdell love. I found it very mediocre, with the components doing a lot of the heavy lifting
