I looked up bands that used a lot of Mellotron and these guys came up. I became a massive fan from the first listen. Memories was actually the first song I listened to. This masterpiece was shortly after. I love Earth and Fire! Cool reaction video.
I have seen them playing this song live so many many times !! It was unbelievable good, as well as the title song "Song of the marching children", They were among the best Dutch bands absolutely !!

I was 4 years old when the song came out. But I did not hear it for the first time when I was 12 years old, and I can still remember every note of the song.
What?! That was crazy good and thoroughly captivating. The vocals and melatron are great but the drummer elevates the song even higher. Your viewership is constantly feeding terrific recs and are a big part of why I love this channel.
Wow, thanks for having attention for this band! Got the singles Memories and mabey twomorrow mabey tonight from my parents these days. Together with Focus and Golden Earring my favourite Dutch bands.
This was my favorite group in the 70,s , beautiful progrock !! In that time there were a lot of progrock groups active in Holland ,and internationally !!
Man, hearing this again is giving me goose bumps all over. This band was an important part of my musical education. Such a good choice. Thanks for this thorough review. I wonder how you prepare this. Well done! Thank you!. Check out ‘Memories’ if you like more guitar.
I haven't listened to these guys in 15 years. I bought this album because I was told the lead singer sounded exactly like Annie Haslam. I still don't agree but, still she has a powerful voice and their music is well worth a listen. If you like this, you will like pretty much everything from their prog collection. Enjoy the journey.
Love earth and fire, love jerneys voice everyone in the group very talented, love storm and thunder never tire of listening their music. Jerneys voice touches your soul.
Aah, this was one I recommended many moons ago. And I love it that you liked it so much. And as I said in my original post: they were really trailblazers in progressive rock since this was released in 1971 (!!).

She suffers severe parkinson nowadays. Great songs from this band..... Memories Maybe tomorrow maybe tonight Fanfare Love of Life The last seagull To the world of the future......and many more!
Wow, prog from my own country.. Definately listen to “memories” and “maybe tomorrow” , you will love the mellotron, guitarwork and pounding drums. This reaction made me very happy ans a great trip down memory lane 😊
It was a hit in 1971. Jerney Kaagman's magnificent voice is utterly beguiling. And she had the looks to match! After this album they made two more 'proggy' discs, Atlantis and To the World of the Future. Gradually they slipped into poppy and danceable fare - not bad at all, but not in the same league. Six months after this they had a number one hit with 'Memories'.
Amazing you tried this one out. Already 50 years (!) old of a band that was not well known outside the Netherlands. I'm also amazed that you like the song so much! Thanks!
These lyrics describe a PERFECT picture of a Dutch hot summer day leading up to a thunderstorm late in the afternoon. And this band , E&F, was 1 of the very best bands to ever come from the Netherlands. They have made many more very good songs very much worth listening to. Jerney did not only have a gorgious voice (nudge-nudge, wink-wink)
Hey Justin.😀 I'm very happy and thrilled you got to review this song. I've been the one droning away over here to get anyone to hear it. I stumbled upon this group about a year ago and knew they needed to be heard. So glad you enjoyed it. If you dare to try them again, a couple of songs from 1969 may be of interest. They are "Wild and Exciting" and "Seasons". Not as proggy as this song but both quite good tracks. Jerney's singing certainly gets "under your skin", doesn't it. If you can, they were on Beat Club playing this song so you can see them in action.
A buddy of mine on the Trainwreck is a total Earth And Fire fanatic. He sent me all of their music on two data discs. I gave them all a fair play, but in the end I only kept one song, "Twilight Dreamer". I really like that song. The only other song that I found interesting was "Ruby Is The One". However, I do LOVE her voice. I just wish the music appealed to me more. It's cool that you liked it so much. Discovering new music that moves you is wonderful. There was a German prog rock band in the early '70s called Frumpy that you might find interesting. Inga Rumpf, the vocalist, has a powerful, raspy voice, but there have been too many Janis Joplin comparisons.
Thanks for this JP. I've been encouraged to dig out my copy of Earth & Fire's 1st album on the strength of your review. They were never that big in Britain, but were played a lot on the offshore ('pirate') radio station, Radio Nordzee International - who were supplied with essentials (inc. records!) from The Netherlands, so used to play a lot of Dutch bands. My favourite E.& F. song is 'Seasons'.
Perfect!!!! And I had forgotten about that group......I'm serous......i remember them...and a friend at the time playing them for me.....we thought the same as you...Perfect!!!! Of course...I even forgot about The Classic IV singing the song, "Spooky." Lol hahahaha....And that song was spooky......hahahaha............................

This is why I love your channel. At least half of everything you react to I’ve never heard, not that I’m some Prog expert, just the opposite truth be told. This band is phenomenal and yes the lead singer for sure gives us Annie Haslam vibes but is distinctive in her own right. Wow. A masterpiece of the Koerts Brothers in Dutch music history. At audition, Jerney Kaagman was actually rejected as singer because she lacked vocal qualities. The same reason why they parted with her towards the end of Earth and Fire. Listen also to their album 'Atlantis'.
Such an amazing record, I think I like it better now, after all these years... I love the way you are appreciating it and even pointing that out!! Must say I love the melatron too!!
Can’t believe I’ve never heard them or of them before. Jerney reminds me of Annie Haslam the way she goes after notes. I’ll have to listen to more. This was fantastic.

Earth and Fire was a great Dutch progband. They changed their sound several times, their debut Earth and Fire (which also was released with a Roger Dean cover) was more akin to the sound of Jefferson Airplane. The Song of the Matching Children 1971 and Atlantis 1973 was Symphonic prog influenced by Genesis, whilst their later albums would go in a more disco/pop direction. Why are there so few reactions to this group? In my opinion, this is high-quality progressive rock of the early 70s! Talented group from the Netherlands
As a Dutch of course this is close to home due to the band and the description of the summer weather over here. Hot, humid at times at least. Days starting somewhat damp and may be even cool. Fast rising temperature and the atmosphere just cannot contain all that energy and it just explodes in the evening with a lightning and who knows a tornado too...Unknown to in fact many many Dutch tornadoes are pretty common over here. Midges are much much smaller than mosquitos and can be very irritating. They love humid weather.
I totally forgot about these guys. I look forward to hearing more. The singer is nice also. I’m often disappointed by prog singers. Many are amazing musicians, but then the singer kills it. However, she’s got the voice! I would love to have heard her and Greg Lake sing together!
I'm very surprised to see this band on your channel, I thought they were only known in the low countries. They had a couple of hits, like "Memories", "Weekend", and "Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight". Their early music was clearly inspired by Jefferson Airplane, but later their style was more diverse ("Weekend" has some Caribbean elements).
@JP. Great that this song gets a recommendation from you and that it touches you. But really, you should be reviewing the ENTIRE ALBUM, because it's a concept album. Besides, the music is so damn well put together. Especially the B-side with the song "Song of the Marching Children" is worth a review alone. I would also like to draw your attention to the (concept) album 'Atlantis'. This album also tells a story.
Interesting. Didn't think of Annie Haslam at first, untill you said it. Now I can't unhear it. But also, kind of reminds me of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES soundtrack by Air, that French, Pink Floydish sound...

I'd recommend a playthrough of either of their first two albums, or give Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight or Memories a spin. Jerney's voice on Memories is simply amazing!
Artistically the first 5 years were their best. A set of very good rocksingles and some prog-rock albums like this one which contains their magnum opus, the prog-rock song..song of the marching children..
