My name is Mohamed Osman and I'm a Somali. I have watched many lectures about Somalia from Somalis and non Somalis alike. I have never seen someone that so accurately close nor so articulate in Somali politics than Mr. or Prof. Menkhaus. Well-done Sir. You almost nailed it except that you were there for nation building. I don't buy that and you now it.
    Thank you,
    Mohamed Abshir (Dhalac.)

This lecture is focused on the sad reality in our country but we'll overcome regardless of how many non-state armed actors there is.

This is an excellent lecture. I am a life-time journalist, a South Sudanese, who was a refugee in Congo (DRC), Tanzania, Zambia, Ireland and UK. I travelled to Somalia as an aid journalist for the first time in 1982 to Mogadishu and to Hargeisa. I spent quite a lot of time in early 1990s in and out of Mogadishu and Baidoa. My experiences in Somalia and many of the African countries mentioned in the lecture, are recorded in my book "Burden of Nationality - Memoirs of an African Aidworker Journalist 1970-1990s By Jacob J. Akol, available on Amazon Kindle. Ken Menkhaus is truly an expert in these situations. I wished more of my South Sudanese leaders listen to him and of course take steps to avoid total Somalia.

Jacob Akol if you have been a journalist that long and you don’t know how the West deceives and destroy nations from within while hiding their hands you truly failed in life! Now pay attention and research how the West plots and destroys nations from within and without and write a book about it!

There is no difference between the North and the South, Tribalism also exists in the North, Two of the reasons why Northern Somalia (Somaliland/Puntland ) is safe is because
1-Terrorist are not interested in the North because most of the wealth, Resources,Farming land, Etc.. are in the South
2- There is no recognition thus there is nothing to fight over but if the international community decides to recognize those regions it will trigger a war among northern clans and that will create the same situation we have in Southern Somalia.
I'm from northern Somalia and i believe that Somalia is recovering just a few days ago a man loved by all Somalis took the office (Farmaajo) Somalis are wakening up we are on the right path to rebuild this nation

Eight years after Professor Ken Menkhaus's research, Somalia has made significant strides toward recovery. While the challenges of state-building remain, particularly in the security sector, the situation has improved. The commodification of security sector work that Menkhaus highlighted is still an issue, but government forces and international partners have worked hard to stabilize large parts of the country. Somalia is now considered 70% safe, with notable economic recovery efforts underway. The resilience of the Somali people, coupled with ongoing international support, continues to strengthen both security and development. However, the road to full stability is still ahead and I would like to discuss with you about Somalia and state building after wars, and it would be great honor for me to participate your lectures.

Somaliland should have been recognised. It has clearly dissolved its Union a long time and ago. Instead it’s diaspora are not able to get a return on the loss to theirs and their families. They were badly in need of infrastructure and water management. More so the Somalia who has at least two rivers and all that money previously poured into it. Why ignore a strategic water way. Maybe for the lucrative criminal activity such as piracy and plunging of their seas from fish. Somaliland has been robbed and continues to be robbed. It’s obvious the disputed area didn’t have oil nor does puntland which were both explored to no avail. Keeping Somaliland in limbo is solely so that it can continue to be plundered from its resources. Keeping Somalis in poverty so UN and AU can make money as well EU to keep it weak. We are owed 20 years of lack of investment and barriers to entry.

I think it will be good idea to give Ethiopia some ports in Somalia in exchange for not building dams on these vital rivers. Without exaggeration, he explained you're topic in a logical way. He said " The Northern regions of Somalia was ignored financially in 1970s and 80s by the Government of Siyad and the economy of the country was in the south, after the civil war the northern regions did not had land disputes as the south, that's why it's safer than the south today".

We have been fighting each other since Cain killed Abel in a place called Geriyaat, that is where the Somali word geeryoodey comes from. Our DNA is EB1B1 M25, we East Africans and our Berber Brothers carry the highest percentage of this Gene. Everyone who Have this DNA is just ready to concur and devide. Hitler Had this DNA So as Majority of Eastern Balkan regions State's who are Also fighting each other Like East Africans. We East Africans Gave birth to Majority of Humanity around the Globe, but few Corupt nations lied to Us and said we are Arabs, as we know now Arabs and their Brothers Semitic jews DNA is J1, except our Hamitic Eastern Ashkenazi jews who share Same Gene EB1B1. Hitler was Ashkenazi Jew, that's why he shares Same DNA with Somalis, and Ethiopian people, As he is decended from Greeks, who also Are EB1B1 Hamitic family. I am proud of my Hamitic Cushitic Genome, but hate how any chance of peace for any nations carrying this Gene to agree on anything for a long terms is Slim to None. Hopefully the mass Exodus and intermarriage with other Genomes will calm the hell us down, and start building a better tomorrow for our future Hamitic Race.

Waryaa Heedheh The western world are behind the most problems in Somali. They started their plan according to the Berlin conference when they meet to discuss Africans future. dividing the African continent between European colonial powers in the second half of the 19th century. The division began and that is what characterizes Africa's political map even today, after the last unexplored regions were mapped and the value of the continent's natural riches made clear to Europeans. they have many methods that they hide but the truth always comes out

I think the solution here is that , it would be batter for all Somali if we become like the European Union , we unati but Somaliland , puntland, and rest of Somalia can each have there own authority over there land but they can have free trade and free flow of people , in that way we can have the core Somali traditional way , but the economy is self govern.

I believe that Somalia should be divided into Somaliland (Isaaq) Puntland (Majerteen) and the territories of Hawiye should be govern by Hawiye and make a regional government like Somaliland and Puntland.Amisom should withdraw and Hawiye should do the fighting against alshabab without AMISOM or other nations involved.Al shabab will be defeated as they will not have any reason to fight Hawiye and it will become more dangerous for them as people will turn against them. Now they say yes these invaders are killing our people and we should fight them.

Professor Ken Menkhaus is an accomplished academic and political commentator. I commend for his in-depth analysis of the Ex-Italian Colony Somalia which he specialises in. Unforunately, the Professor from the outset seems to be not very knowledgeable with regards to Ex British Protectorate Somaliland. From his very brief comments regarding Somaliland he comes out as someone who has a very limited understanding of the history of Somaliland both recent and historic. For instance, he dismisses the enormous efforts that the Somaliland people both armed groups and civilians to disarm the people and create a working functioning state from the ashes of the civilwar.
Can I make it clear, in 1991 the largest and the most established with the most armour and fire power of all the armed opposition groups to the Siyad Barre regime was the Somali National Movement (SNM) which operated from 1981 til 1991 as the most effect fighting force anywhere in Africa. Siyad Barre as the Professor rightly asserted commanded the biggest armed forces in Africa in the 1980s. Siyad Barre like any other dictator (such that of recent deposed Libyan Dictator) surrounded himself with his family members whose role were to terrorise and kill in order to prolong his regime. Similarly, Siyad deployed the majority of his fighting forces to the north in order to destroy and eliminate the treats posed by the SNM and to anyone that supported them. Siyad Barre ordered his close family member and son in law General Morgan for the task.
The USC and other opposition groups that took arms in 1990s did not face a lot of resistance before they stormed the President Palace. Perhaps this was one of the reasons why so many foreigners were not prepared when that occurred. In the eyes of the Somali people, this was not unexpected. Since Siyad Barre placed the majority of his army in the North and the surprise offensive in the South caught his army by surprise. This was the reason why Siyad Barre had to recall his Son in Law and other senior army officers from the north. But it was too late.
My point is, the people of the South specialy the Hawiye did not have enough time to create an identify. Their surprise offensive which won them Mogadishu was very quick. And when Siyad Barre was ousted, they turned the gun on each other. The north however, the 10 year of bitter war with Siyad Barre created a sense of identity and unity which helped them to start peace and negotiations with other clans. That was not the case in the South.

+Somaliland United As you admitted this it in-depth analysis of the non-state actors in Somalia (South Somalia). Your dissatisfaction seems his lack of interest in your little secessionist campaign. Here, the academic was focusing only on the non-state actors (spoilers) in the south of the country and namely in the capital. As for Somaliland, I think he even exaggerated the state of peace and democracy in there. I am from the north, namely in Togdher region and we all know the so-called democracy in there is just a mere show for the foreign donors. What you have is pure tribal madness that is not even ready to look beyond their narrow tribal mindset. As someone from the north, I would like to see an inclusive system that welcomes all sides of the northern people.

This guy had said nothing about the historical difference between Somaliland and Somalia, this two countries have been under two different colonial powers for at least 76 years completely different styles of governing and I don't know why he's whitewashing Somaliland under this new federal system created by the Western nations within the last 10 years. International money is the problem in Somalia get out and let somalia handle their affairs , Western governments created it Al-Shabab that's why he does not want to go into a detail, just the way Isis was created by the United States government and some Middle Eastern nations that's undeniable.
