I made a last minute plan to go on an over-nighter, and decided on North York Moors. Staying in the quaint little seaside village of Robin Hood's Bay, just down the coast from Whitby.
No real agenda, just mooching about on my beloved VFR800!

I rode bikes for years but had to sell my last one 25 years ago. I started riding in 1974 and gave up the cause in the early 90's. I'd not really thought about biking again, but for some reason, not too long ago, You Tube recommended one of your videos. It was the first installment of your trip to the USA. I've been around the world, so the travel element intrigued me so I clicked the play button and I watched every episode of that wonderful trip which also brought everything back about the good things about riding.
The helmet cam in particular fascinated me as the view on the screen made me feel, in it's limited sense, I was sitting on the bike with the handlebars in my hands.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I put a deposit down on a new Honda last week, and tomorrow I'm off on my first bike ride for 25 years. It's a return to biking course, and to say I'm looking forward to it is an understatement.
I sincerely want to thank you for your videos that have been absolutely inspirational in my decision to return to the fold.
I can't wait to ride out to Grindleford café and enjoy a brew.

      @@RichyVida. Well, obviously I survived!
I'll try and keep it short. It was a 3 hour session paid for by Honda, and I started out on a 125. After initially nearly throwing myself over the handlebars when I used the brakes for the first time, we went out on the road.
I had an earpiece fitted so I could receive instructions and advice, which is good in itself but I found myself concentrating so much on the basics of riding I couldn't process all the information I was being given.
We went out into the country for a while then stopped to have a chat. The instructor said he was generally happy with my riding, it was composed, safe and in control, but I didn't feel that way at all. It was a very windy day, the bike was moving all over the place and I was far from comfortable, so we decided to head to the car park they use for some low speed maneuvers.
When we arrived there he put me on the CB650 and I immediately found it a much easier bike to ride. We spent about an hour and a half performing figures of 8, U-turns, slaloming around cones, etc, and I was fine. I never fealt I was about to lose the bike and never had to put a foot down. It was a pleasant feeling when trepidation was slowly replaced by enjoyment. Apparently, I passed MOD1 with ease!
I rode the 125 back to the training centre and everything started falling back into place as I was feeling much more in control. We then had a de-brief and I booked a full day advanced ride out with them on the 16th April. We'll be spending the day riding around north Wales, with me on the 650, and possibly stopping for lunch at the Ponderosa café.
So, all in all, a positive experience. I have no complaints at all about the training. Lee is an engaging individual and we had plenty of laughs but he was superb when explaining and showing me how to do things.
After having had a couple of days to mull things over, yes, I wasn't initially enjoying riding the bike. but then I have a reference point, which is being a reasonably competent rider. I'm still a way away from that, but I'm hoping my next ride out takes me a step closer to how I used to feel.
I'll see how it goes and give you an update in due course.

Cracking vid. As I'm not the first to comment on this you probably already know 1) Malton (place you fuelled up) what a disaster with the level crossing road markings ! they've changed the priority before and it's worse now ! 2) Building in the middle of nowt is RAF Fylingdales 3) Land on fire is heather burning which seems strange but its done for ecological reasons ! Looking forward to part 2 Thanks again

Richy the final picture on this one that you took just before you got into RHB overlooks a really good campsite called Hook House Farm. We have stayed there many times and overlooks the bay. At low tide you can walk along the waters edge to Boggle hole where the Youth Hostel is.
We love it there and always enjoy a trip to the town that shares our name....Whitby 😉 Nice one matey 👍

Aye we are quite used to burning the heather up North so I’d say with some confidence that’s what’s happening. Helps it regenerate and also creates breaks incase of wild fires, stops them spreading as rapidly. Brilliant weather again and great views. I like the new cam angles too. Cheers

....that puck is a good idea - I've left quite a few behind on grassy fields - one was even a nice old brass ashtray that I got off a stall at a Steam Rally...but it's in a field somewhere ! You did the right thing getting B & B as I cringe at the thought of what might happen when we get tired on a long journey and try to get there and back in a day.

Lovely video, I grew up in Bridlington but now live in western Canada. My Dad took us around the Moore’s as kids , then I got to walk around them when stationed in Catterick with the military. Nice to see the old roads around there. I could never live back in the UK again though. It’s been 25 years but in my opinion North Yorkshire is the nicest part of England.

Don't panic Richy, heather burning is a normal practice to regenerate the land - it's done on purpose in controlled sections.
Guessing this was filmed last Friday or Saturday? Me and my touring buddies went to Lincoln Friday, then down to sportsbikeshop Saturday, and back up through the Wolds, over the bridge to Beverley - York - Harrogate - Skipton and home to Lancaster. It was like summer.
Thanks for the video...I was hoping one of you guys would put something up tonight and you delivered!

Nice to see you riding around my neck of the woods, the invitation I sent you earlier this year is still open if you wish. For your info, sections of the moor are burnt off deliberately this time of the year on a three year cycle to prevent huge moor fires that can occur during the summer. Also the pyramid shaped building you saw is RAF Fylingdales, It is a radar base, part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. You are blessed that you didn't sent up your drone or take photos near it as there would have been a strong possibility of being questioned by armed MP's, lol. Some lovely photos and camera work as we have come to expect from you ,well done matey.

Love It. Did a similar thing a couple of years ago, just my bike and me, also on a VFR (1200 Crosstourer). Using Bikers Britain book, up the east coast, some of the same roads you used , i remember the railway crossing. Turned inland at Whitby for a nightstop at a pub in Hawes. Then south and through the peak district. Brilliant couple of days. Love riding with mates but going solo is completely different, felt so relaxing. Must do it again.

Good vid I love biking in Yorkshire and the north east, it is one of the things I miss from moving down south, you sold me on the puck, and I am excited to change my current bike out later this year probably for a (don’t laugh)😀 2012-2017 Goldwing. I would go back to a vfr, but two uping touring know I found my current bike the bmw rt 2011 isn’t for my passenger comfortable long distance and space for kit limited when paked for two(it is doable though). and being a bmw it needs a special grade engine oil that so far I can only source of bmw. But it has been a good bike. But when I had the VFR800 that was my fav and do regret getting rid of her. But I don’t feal the vfr would be good two uping on long tours. But I may invest in the future into a vfr as a weekend bike. Love you’re vids especially the tour vids grate to help see and plan future tours and has opened my eyes to other places I may of over looked. Keep up the hard work..

I have been to Aidensfield about 5 years ago, that is not the real name of the village, luckily the owner of the campsite told us the real name of the place so we could go take a look around, had a little look around the garage.

I got a tip on a fb wall a while back to tie a bit of string on the foot stand saucer so you can pull it up when your sitting on the bike, same idea as your reel one. Not as good as yours, but it works.

    • @thunderfoot4329
      @thunderfoot4329 5 лет назад +1

These are the real deal tho after all. The Rolls Royce of pucks lets say! The string idea is part of my inspiration and like Henry Royce said " Take something that exists and make it better",
But more importantly the string wont get tangled in anything in your pocket or worse come out of your pocket and get tangled in your bike somewhere. Ride Safe..

I think I need to do more last minute, flight of fancy rides this year. I've been meaning to have a blast to Llandudno as a day tripper. It doesn't seem too bad a day trip from Notts. Just a waiting for a weekend with no plans and no signs of rain. 🖒

That's Y it's called Gods Own Country ! Glad U liked my home "The Bay" is where Robin Hood lived Oh Yeah ! When U reached Helmsley turn left (where woman pulled out on U) B1257 is the Infamous Helmsley TT to Stokesley road condition poor nowadays but is what it is (actually runs from Malton U were on part of it) Great to see & hear U say WOW ! Hole of Horcum on A169 Pickering to Whitby is where to use the drone. One word of warning Plod cameras R normally massive on all these roads "watch your POINTS Stay Lucky" Glad U appreciated us (funny remark about "land on fire" & funny building in distance Fylingdale Early Warning Station used to B "Golf Balls" google it). Never use the drone near there will NEVER CU AGAIN SERIOUSLY!!!!!

Dude, heading “back home” up to my sisters in Huddersfield next week from “darn sarf” for the weekend. Hoping to head back down on Sunday through the Derbyshire Dales. Never been through that part of the world as normally travel up and down the A1 when visiting family. As im passing through whats the best route from Huddersfield, where would be a good place for a brew and butty stop with great roads. Im told the cat n fiddle is too much of a faff nowadays with all the speed restrictions.
