i think this gives the mavs the option to mix match the back court between Luka/Ky, Ky/Klay, and Luka/Klay while one sits and gets rest, and then having all three on the floor for some spells as well when you have a lead and are trying to extend the lead.
This idea that the defense is going to fall off a cliff because Klay replaces DJJ in the starting lineup is way overblown. We weren't calling DJJ an all-world defender when he was starting next to Grant Willams & D Live for the first 2/3's of the season. I loved DJJ, but thought he played way above his head this past season, which is easy to do when Luka is serving you on offense and all you need to worry about is playing D. It wasn't till after Mavs traded for PJ & Gaff, AND Luka & Kyrie stepping up, that we saw the defense become what it was. I thought PJ showed he could be an amazing POA defender. Klay will always be on the court next to PJ/Naji/Grimes & D-Live/Gafford/Maxi, so all he really needs to be is not a liability. Which he is actually a good defender. Klay Thompson Redemption Tour is on the way, and I can't wait to see what the "Luka bump" is going to do for someone who is a 20ppg & 40% 3-pt shooter.
“I admittedly did not watch Luka & the Mavs until literally the last series of the year but the defense in Dallas is trash & Luka is a cone” Liked her until that part. Wish I could be that confident while having no clue what I’m talking about.
I hope the Mavs can get the new players to feel the love and get into the flow quickly like what happened with PJ and Gafford, I think they can, and it is going to be very cool to watch them develop.
Is his injuries really of concern at this point? 2 years removed and nothing! I think him being 34 is more of a reason that his defense has slowed a bit, although I think he will surprise people with a change of scenery!
The problem all these people have saying Klay is washed or he’s lost a step is it takes 2 full years to recover from an Achilles perfect example is KD. His last 30 games of the season he found his groove again and the numbers back it up. For example first 30 games 17ppg on 42.5% FG and 38% from 3 on 8.5 attempts per game. His last 30 games 19.5ppg on 46% FG and 41% from 3 on 9.5 attempts.
IIRC, Dallas tends to sub in at around the 6-8 min mark, and it's usually Luka that subs out first. So honestly, the whole "best perimeter defenders aren't starting" is kinda overblown. I can see Klay's role being either: 1: He starts but is the first to sub out and gets 10-15 minutes per game at the beginning of the first and third quarters. 2: He comes off the bench as a 6th man, getting 25- 30 mins that way. I personally think he would be best in that 6th man role, as that would allow Dallas to play either Grimes or Marshall in that "starter" role. Also, bear in mind that neither Luka, Klay nor Kyrie are going to play every game. So there are going to be plenty of games where Grimes and Marshall start simply due to Luka/Kyrie/Klay not playing. So I think having Grimes and Marshall on the bench isn't going to be as big of an issue in the regular season. Now, the playoffs are a different issue. That being said, we saw both Luka and Kyrie really crank up the defensive intensity in this last playoff run. So if Dallas can get that Luka and Kyrie again, I think we would be fine.
Klay starts and finishes games in playoffs and regular season as long as he is healthy. What i think people overlook is our defense is rotations and effort base. Even when we had the personal with DJJ-PJ-Lively it was like that. You ask Klay to be average on defense, we already have amazing rim protection and PJ that can cover for. Not to mention LuKai duo is very smart defenders. Kidd can make them buy in in playoffs, if goal is 1-3 seed they can buy in in regular season aswell. Not expecting %100 effort ofc, enough to be 1-3 seed. Plus you dont ask Klay to run through screens and chase guys and contest that, we are mobile team and modern defense. The minutes he’ll play as a primary defender are 5-8 max. I think he can handle that.
Warriors got 2 2nds...the mavs likely did NOT get rid of their THJ exception (and likely just used the expiring bertans exception for the 3M salary difference)....either this or they did use the THJ exception but then created a new 13.5M one for trading away Green....this is HUGE and means the mavs still have room for one more trade, likely combining maxi and the exception for someone worth 24M-27M
i dont think they can trade for a player thats "worth" 20 mill(what i mean is we can have a player on a 20 mill contract but the contract isn´t a good one), we only have kleber and a first, we certaintly could get a kleber replacement, or a poa defender. Would be interesting to see if we can trade PJ with kleber to get a starter that is a good poa defender(to replace djj), but that probably wont happen now, if it happens it´s gonna be in the middle of the season, too much of a risk to take now since we have to see how the trades that were made play out in practice
By the Mavs making it to the Finals. The healthy tight knit family atmosphere where they genuinely care and hang out with each other. Luka being Top 2 in the league. Wide open spot up 3’s. No state tax. Kyrie Irving, Etc…
Tell Gaff and Dlive to practice more threes, then we can play 5-out offense, which create more space for Luka and Kyrie to attack. Though I am really worried about our perimeter defense if Klay starts.
3 great pick ups. Certainly a upgrade over THJ, Green and DJ. But we didnt address our #1 need. Go get LM from Jazz. Even if we have to move Hardy, PJ & OMax. Would love to get him for: Maxi, Hardy, Powell & Naji.
I think the key for the Mavs defense will be quick subs. Let them all start but three minutes in pull Kyrie for a defender and get him ready to play with the second unit. As long as Kyrie starts and plays most the 4th he'll be fine with that.
The mavs are the perfect spot for klay. This is the team where everyone counts us out. We were just in the finals and people are saying we won’t even be in the WCF next year because of how “bad we were in the finals”. Nobody believed in ANY PLAYER ON THE MAVS. Luka, Kai, DJJ, Pj, Gafford. NOBODY believed in ANY of those pic ups, the same wa many don’t believe in klay. I think he will fit. If he ca replicate last season on the mavs the THATS enough. Solid defense and knoc down 3
The Mavs needed a 3 pt shooter. The Mavs have interior defense now, so Klay will be fine on D. Down the stretch, the Mavs can sub for offense and defense. But hopefully, the Mavs will have some more clutch wide open 3s go in (and Luka’s assists will go up too).
Klay will play the four late in games. Luka at the three, Kyrie the two and Grimes on the point. Lively will of course play the five but we will mix in Marshall, OMax and Washington to play over the top on larger point forwards.
Wrong lol Washington will be in the closing lineup. He's a fixture at the 4. Lively at the 5. Klay will be at the 3. Irving at the 2. And Luka the 1. On defense it will still be the funnel style.
PJ off the court late in games is a bad move. I agree that Klay should be guarding bigger players, but if Grimes is closing games, then something is wrong. Luka and KY simply have to improve or give more effort defensively. But our closing 5 should be Luka Kyrie Klay PJ Lively/Gafford With the occasional Grimes/Exum/Maxi/Marshall appearance late, depending on the matchup.
So far it feels like the Mavs have had the best off-season of any team. The Sixers and Lakers definitely improved as well... The Knicks did great getting Bridges, but damn that was a hefty cost... Also glad to see the Nuggets losing KCP.
Fascinating how everything she said about what was wrong with Klay's game in his bad year describes THJ to a teeth. On the one hand, this means Klay has to be his absolute worst for him to have little to no impact on the Mavs like THJ had in the last 1/3 of the season and playoffs (except for game 2 vs. OKC) -- which is highly unlikely to happen; on the other hand, finally getting rid of the worst shot selector, 0 IQ, unidimensional defensive hole guy, and hearing his ghost can show up from time to time in Klay's bad nights is spooky.
Klay is going to be a great addition to the Mavs. However if he presses/forces a lot like he did last season trying to prove something, Mavs fans will have a long year.
Q? If both Klay and Kyrie wears no. 11 and represent 11 in their respective signature Anta sneakers, I guess Klay10 new model to release nxt will change design and number there already? How about use no.10, so it matches the latest model, and also it is available, previously used by THJ. Klay10 with 10 on his jersey too, could be cool!

Klay shoots most of his threes off of movement and picks. The Mavericks offense has an opportunity now to add more complexity that will take a lot of pressure off of Luka. They need to add a five out type of offense and get away from Luka constantly doing the bully ball drives into the lane. Luka takes so much contact with constantly driving into the lane that causes him to get beat up and worn out. Playing defense is mostly a matter of effort so if Luka, Kyrie, and Klay can score with less effort they can put more effort in their defense. The Mavericks need to take a long-term view of how to keep Luka healthy. The loss to the Celtics revealed that the Mavericks need to make their offense more flexible and add a lot more three-point shooting.
Real Ws fans aren’t freaking out. Best highlight for over a decade+ was beating the Mavs as the 8 seed. Warriors are not a title contender, but that’s ok. It’s been a good run.
ROFLMAO. Klay can barely shoot since he tore his ACL and Achilles and Kyrie literally CHOKED in the finals. Mavs will lose to OKC or Denver in the playoffs next season. Brika needs to lose that fat beer gut and learn how to play both ends of the court in order to truly play with the best in the future.
they better rack up the offense in the 1st quarter cause their starting line up defense degrades a lil bit. lets hope 2nd line up with grimes and other 3ND would hold opponents offense while starters are resting. cause if not its gonna be hard to maintain scoring without defense
I disagree with some of the Klay Thompson analysis. The reason why it became Klay taking bad shots was mostly because the offense was clearly trying to phase him out. They stopped running the same amount of plays for him and stopped trying to get him touches. He shot less shots last year on almost same percentages so a lot of those missed shots were just simply from him forcing it because they knew they were going to let him go. GSW knew he was betting on himself and they didn’t want him to win. If klay averaged 20 on 40% from 3 they can’t justify not paying him. They wanted him to be bench player simply so they could justify themselves or convince him to take less. When they moved him to the bench who exactly stepped up? The team didn’t get better.
Good fit and he done what’s for him…they always say never let your guys get to free agency…GSW valued Paul George more than Klay but he didn’t choose them either…go MAVS
Honestly this version of the Mavs is prob best if Klay would be a nasty 6th man of the year. We can start the games nasty on D then he can come in and light it up. Either way, let’s go!!
As it relates to this trade……if you don’t see the sucker in the room, it’s you. Charlotte gets Josh Green ostensibly for free Golden state gets two 2nd round picks for a player they did not want. Dallas received an aging star who’s best basketball is clearly behind him

“I admittedly did not watch Luka & the Mavs until literally the last series of the year but the defense in Dallas is trash & Luka is a cone”
Liked her until that part. Wish I could be that confident while having no clue what I’m talking about.
Bro Nick telling the Racoon Squad story is so sweet 😭😭😭
Mychal Thompson on an interview said “I was hoping and praying he’d finish his career with the Lakers”
We will never beat the NBA Dad hate
Here is to Klay Thompson joining the Mavericks!!!! Here to making more threes!!!!
Exactly! The warriors needed prime klay, the mavs need THIS KLAY. If he actually came off the bench he could def be a 6th moy
I hope the Mavs can get the new players to feel the love and get into the flow quickly like what happened with PJ and Gafford, I think they can, and it is going to be very cool to watch them develop.
He may not be the same defender as he used to be, but offensively he moves well without the ball and shoots the lights out of all of it.
I really didn't want the Mavs to give up Josh G, but I'm not sure what role he would have had, had he stayed.
Ey Nick, there is some chemistry there. You should call her more often, not just for podcasting. She seems a really interesting woman
I can see Klay's role being either:
1: He starts but is the first to sub out and gets 10-15 minutes per game at the beginning of the first and third quarters.
The taxes come into play when you compare the money from the lakers to the mavs current offers, not the warriors past offers
Let’s get doe doe back 😈
Im telling you now, guys, Klay purposely missed those crucial shots to spite the Dubs
Will klay be ok not starting or will he get good enough on defense to be in atarting five
How did we get Klay for barely anything?
By the Mavs making it to the Finals. The healthy tight knit family atmosphere where they genuinely care and hang out with each other. Luka being Top 2 in the league. Wide open spot up 3’s. No state tax. Kyrie Irving, Etc…
The warriors had very little leverage
@@Thelostandprofoundpodcast buddy said top 2. why do we gotta cap? he's the best in the league. he beat the team that beat jokic.
@@dolukiri I was just being humble. He should have won MVP
Solid defense and knoc down 3
He just can’t have another 0-10 in an important game though.
Anything
The Mavs needed a 3 pt shooter. The Mavs have interior defense now, so Klay will be fine on D. Down the stretch, the Mavs can sub for offense and defense. But hopefully, the Mavs will have some more clutch wide open 3s go in (and Luka’s assists will go up too).
Luka Magik, Kyrie the Magnificant and Game 6 Klay 😮😂❤
But our closing 5 should be
Luka
Kyrie
Klay
PJ
Lively/Gafford
With the occasional Grimes/Exum/Maxi/Marshall appearance late, depending on the matchup.
Love the idea. Unfotunately, either luka or kyrie can be the only 1's in this team.
@@KevsJanhe talks defensively
Grimes?? Doubt it
Nick the Rizzler
One of the best podcasts. Maybe the two of you do an occasional offseason podcast on “neutral” topics.
Interesting to see what happens when a player goes from a team that prioritizes off ball screens and body movement to a team that spams pick and rolls
With this current roster bar injury, mavs is a 60+ win team next season, and mvp for luka
if you told me 4 years ago the mavs would have kyrie and klay Thompson i would have thought you were crazy
Do you think Kidd will bench PJ and start Naji ? If so how will PJ feel
So far it feels like the Mavs have had the best off-season of any team. The Sixers and Lakers definitely improved as well... The Knicks did great getting Bridges, but damn that was a hefty cost... Also glad to see the Nuggets losing KCP.
Mavs and Thunder with two best offseasons. Typical considering they have great GMs. And how did Lakers improve? lol
Okc has gotten better as well...
Getting Bronny and another rookie does not improve the lakers more than Dallas improved. Now OKC is stacked.
@@reececisneros1622 I'm assuming they land Demar Derozen as has been reported.
Y'all are right, I should've said OKC before the Lakers, but assuming they land Demar, the Lakers will also have done well.
Could we sign Dennis Smith jr and Lonnie Walker
Brooooo shes good at her job
how unrealistic is a forward rotation with klay/pj/grimes/naji taking turns starting based on the matchup?
Thought Dana was on when I saw the thumbnail
Does Kylen still do the Warriors Locked On show with Cyrus Sausage? Ask her if Klay is bringing the boat to TX
Kylen 😘

What, Racc Squad?
The Splash Mavericks.
You can’t pay somebody for what they have done you got to pay them for what they can do
How do the Mavericks prevent over use of Klay?
I think defense with Klay is going to be fine.
We were running Luka, Kyrie, THJ lineups... can it be worse than that?
Will Klay be starting or Marshall will start?
Klay will start no doubt.
they better rack up the offense in the 1st quarter cause their starting line up defense degrades a lil bit. lets hope 2nd line up with grimes and other 3ND would hold opponents offense while starters are resting. cause if not its gonna be hard to maintain scoring without defense
Klay, I’m sure he decided on the Mavs for that reason. If he gets hurt, I expect Grimes to start. He has already started before and did a solid job.
The team didn’t get better.
the fact that all she watched was the finals is unironically why people hate warriors fans. it’s like the entire fan base doesn’t know ball lmao
Luka, Kyrie & 35 yr-old Klay in the starting lineup. There's no perimeter defense there. That's a BIG problem.
Charlotte gets Josh Green ostensibly for free
Golden state gets two 2nd round picks for a player they did not want.
Dallas received an aging star who’s best basketball is clearly behind him

Oh damn what jersey number with Klay wear? Will Ky change again?
Mavs should look into signing Jordan Nwora.
Is Klay the Warriors version Brunson
I think klay off the bench based on matchups. Still playing around 30 mpg is the way to go.
