  • On the outskirts of a picturesque French village, there lived a quiet humble man named Marcel. Originally from nearby Switzerland, Marcel had masked a small fortune after he inherited his family’s successful plaster business, which was actually located in China. Marcel was a hard working businessman who constantly travelled back and forth between France and China, growing the plaster company even more and in turn, had pretty much become a millionaire. But Marcel was getting older and often yearned to be home with his wife Petra and their children.
Aside from his blossoming career, Marcel was passionate about two things- his family, and the restoration of historical buildings. As a husband and father of three, Marcel had always been dedicated to providing for his loved ones. However, as he grew older, he longed for a change of pace and a wanted to buy a cheap fixer-chupper of sorts, where he could work on the home in his downtime and truly enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
So, at the tender age of 50, he decided to fulfill his lifelong dream of moving out of the city and into the peaceful countryside of France… but he wanted to find an old historical villa that needed desperate renovations, so that he could help restore the home to its former glory.
One day, while exploring the French countryside looking for one of these fixer uppers, Marcel stumbled across an old 17th century mansion perched upon a hill just on the outskirts of a small, peaceful village. Marcel went on to rebuild the once vacant home and create a true masterpiece from the villa’s bare bones and into his dream estate. With all of his acquired skills that he had learned from working in the plaster business, coupled with his complete knowledge of historical restoration work, his new home was finally completed and he started the next chapter in his life.
He learned to embrace the slower pace of life, savoring every moment and cherishing the simple joys that surrounded him and his family. As the seasons changed and the years passed, Marcel watched his children grow up, flourish, and eventually move out to start their own lives. He reveled in the bonding and times that they all shared together, grateful for the opportunity to raise them in such a peaceful and idyllic setting.
Marcel and his wife Petra continued to live as “empty nesters” in the tranquil home until 2010, when Petra was diagnosed with cancer and died the following year. Unfortunately, Marcel, having a broken heart in addition to battling his own health problems was barely able to take care of himself. Losing his beloved wife proved to be too much for him as his physical health increasingly got worse and he became unable to walk and was confined to a wheelchair.
He now lived in complete isolation and loneliness now haunting him.
Surrounded by the walls he'd built for his family, they'd become a hellacious reminders of the love, the joy, and the life that was once here but is now gone with the passing of time.
And so, Marcel lived out his days in confinement, surrounded by the beauty of his adopted home.
As the sun set over the rolling hills, he reflected on his journey from Switzerland to China and then to France, grateful for the new chapter that he had begun and the memories that he had created along the way.
In 2013, Marcel died, alone in his house. Many speculate that he grieved himself to death.
Sadly, even though his children were to inherit the property, they've all been in a legal battle with each other for over a decade, unable to reach an agreement on how to divide the estate. They have been entangled in this lawsuit for several years and are not allowed to enter the villa until a settlement of some sorts is reached.
Meanwhile, the once marvelous masterpiece their father had created now sits completely abandoned and rotting away. Even Marcel’s beloved RV still sits in the villa’s front yard, slowly being swallowed by nature reclaiming its course. Despite the stately villa decaying more and more as each day passes, unbelievably it still holds all of Marcel’s belongings and many of his prized possessions from his various trips across the world.

Can you imagine how beautiful that was during its glory years. Imagine the servants going up and down the stairs. There would also be a need for full-time gardeners.

What’s to fight over… his children should be ashamed of themselves…. When their father passed away this once beautiful home should have been put on the market, sold then proceeds split evenly….god only knows it would have brought a higher price back then than now…. Shame on them. The carvings on the furniture are beautiful the marble fireplaces stunning. He worked all his life to give them a beautiful home and through them it’s decaying like this… 😢

That depends on whether a Will was written out in the first place ? Believe me I've been down this road when my father died. It's not as straightforward as you think when it comes to properties. Why so many are abandoned. And if the chap and wife I believe came from elsewhere and not native to this country. Then it's not a simple task to solve. Laws differ in cases like this around the world. Solicitor's, estate agents etc etc grab more from you than you'd expect in return. I had a lot of hassle when my father died you don't get time to grieve whatsoever 😔

The kids fighting over it to the point where nothing is happening there and it's rotting away along with all his belongings. As I will always say, modern people are sad and pathetic. I hope all his children get nothing (which it already seems that way!) People need to grow up.

What’s really sad was that he redid the place and made it beautiful and look at it now. Just a total waste.

There is nothing cheap about this estate. Not only are there property taxes, but it would cost millions just to restore it. It is also a health hazard due to mold and a plethora of insects. TAKE NOTE there may be asbestos on the roof and the walls. Further, the PAINT can be have lead in it. ALL of this means extreme health hazards. I can tell some of that wallpaper has lead in it. I would not go in there without a hazmat suit on. The hazards of lead and asbestos without doubt took its toll.

Pathetic to let that beautiful furniture get destroyed like that. If siblings are fighting sensible thing would have been to auction off the furniture & fixtures & split the money. Then let the house rot 🙄

What a beautiful mansion. I see why he wanted it. You said he got this at age 50, and fixed it up. That makes sense. I have men in my family around that same age, who suddenly wanted to build their own house, after living somewhere else their whole life. I think the human race does that. Beginning of middle age, there's a change for sure.

What a ridiculously gorgeous mansion. I would definitely take my time going through each room methodically taking in as much as possible. God knows how long it's got left to be appreciated with that horrible water damage.

14:27 That frame with the mirror is super nice the kind that costs a weeks wages. 21:05 that gold framed mirror was another expensive piece. That man and his wife had great taste in furniture and the mansion. It’s a shame his offspring are so petty and let it all be destroyed.
