Yea I've got a rev 1 tin top with rev 3 geometry, a st205 (5s bottom end, 520bhp, E153), supra disks, skyline calipers celica front end and fully custom bodywork. She's a frankenstein for sure and I wouldn't swap her for a ferrari tbh, but I did build her for me from a bare shell up so it's pretty personalised for me, I've got some pretty interesting SW20 projects coming up these next 2 years if anyone is interested......
I got a largely stock 1991 MR2 GT as a mini investment that I could enjoy in the meantime. Once I got it a nice service and back on the road, the prices then went insane. And yet, I don't think I could get rid of the only car to put such a huge smile on my face to drive.
Good review! I never thought about that. This car really was in a category of its own. I would've said it competed with the S13 240SX and Eclipse, but that's where the Celica stepped in. Fun fact about the 3SGTE engine. Toyota actually snapped this engine into the MKIV Supra to run in the JGTC series. That should tell you how well it compares to the 2JZ engine!
I do love the fact that they used the 3S-GT engine straight out of their successful rally cars. Hey the engine tech was right there, why not throw it in the Supra?
wanted one since i was a little kid. finally got one, a 93 turbo, somehow never wrecked, no engine. put a 3.5l v6 in it now.. amazing driving car.. even if its a little rust and been sitting for a decade. hope to bring it up to like new, but with the modern power. its a BLAST (best 2500 i ever spent)
@@autoobsessivegarage 2012 rav4 v6 with pistons from a 2015 highlander hybrid (i tossed them in since it was a free engine with a headgasket leak). all ran by a 2011 sienna modified ECU from FMW. bolted up to a turbo mr2 e153 5 speed. things a rocket. engine weighs less than the original 3sgte too
I put a j&s knock control system on my 93 and made the car run a lot quicker. It was tied in with an MSD 6A with Nology hot wires and a dual valve booster controller from MR2 performance products (out of business). Ran a garret t3/t4 turbo with an ACT clutch with the 6 puck copper metallic disk. Just upgraded the intercooler fan and a custom made dual feed fuel rail. Was able to pull 5sec range 0-60's and 13sec flat in the 1/4. The top end wasn't much more than 160mph due to the stock tranny. Forgot to mention I rebuilt the engine with arias forged aluminum pistons, total seal piston rings, custom ground cams., ARP studded the whole engine and used a TRD triple layer metal head gasket). Sadly lost the car to Bambi. To this day it has been my favorite car I ever owned.
Those are some tried and true mods. I love how much potential they had with just bolt one, but you took it even further. Thing must have been a blast to drive to hard.
With that engine you can easily make 1000 horsepower I have seen a video of somebody doing it. I'm 11 years old and I'm so obsessed with cars can't wait till I become 16
It's a shame that you have to buy the Toyota MR2 Turbo for that engine. I just wish that all the MR2 had that engine. Toyota MR2 from 1991 is way better then the Toyota Celica gt4 1994 do you agree with me #savethemanuals.
I got my SW20 when I was 35, I am 52 now and hope to still be driving her in another 17 years
Here’s to more than another 17 years!
Dang you are a real one! Good luck!!
hell yeah baby im 35 and i got my first MR2 at 35 as well!. You are a great model to follow.
Got one 20 years ago , had quite a few problems along the way but I still look at it and drive it and say wow that is one heck of a car
Sometimes it’s the issues we overcome that make a car that much more special. Glad you held on to it all this time and really glad you still enjoy it.
Definitely one of the best cars ever made. I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine it’s so much fun to drive.
Agreed, one of the most fun cars to drive at any price point.

You got in at a good time. Keep enjoying it as the prices are never going down on these.
Good review!

wanted one since i was a little kid. finally got one, a 93 turbo, somehow never wrecked, no engine. put a 3.5l v6 in it now.. amazing driving car.. even if its a little rust and been sitting for a decade. hope to bring it up to like new, but with the modern power. its a BLAST (best 2500 i ever spent)
That sounds epic! What 3.5 engine? The one in an IS350?

hopefully get it on a dyno this year and see what the 12.5:1 does. typical numbers with the 2gr are around 280-300 wheel. im hoping for 310-320
This sounds completely epic!
Finally a good review that goes into depth about the car and what to expect!!
Super dope my man!!
Appreciate that!

Still drive m'y 91T daily.
Heck yeah…did you keep it stock?
@@autoobsessivegarage yes, as much as possible
MR2 stands for Minimal Room for 2!
You have cracked the code!
I’ve been doing my research on this car and this vid helped me out to decide wether or not to make this my to buy car
Hope you score an awesome example!
I saw most of the vid and it seems like a pretty reliable car and the price range isn’t to baf
Bad *
the white one looks like a barbie car
Haha fair enough.
the area looks nice.
Shot this review on short notice at some remote farmland. Worked out pretty sweet but I still favor the canyons I usually film in.
Front license plate is tied down with zip ties 😆 🤣
I'd much rather see this fix versus a half-assed and rushed turbo engine swap into an N/A car. Waaaay scarier and more common than you think.
With that engine you can easily make 1000 horsepower I have seen a video of somebody doing it. I'm 11 years old and I'm so obsessed with cars can't wait till I become 16
Agreed, that engine has some serious tuning potential.

@wendyandgeoffpattison2610 you are right even though the engine can make 1000 horsepower it's not reliable for the street
Do a video on lexus sc300
If I could track down a manual version for a decent price, I’d be all about it!
@@autoobsessivegarage nice I have 1 but not for sale .you can see it on my RUclips channel turbo&gears it a nardo gray 1
Mine was STOLEN 😠😠😠😠
That sucks! I'm sorry to hear that...there's something about car thieves that makes them extra horrible.
You weebs can talk all the shit you want about koki taillights, or whatever. The taillights we got in the States look WAY better.
It’s like farts, everyone likes their own flavor.
Either way you cut it, the car still looks fantastic.
