Thanks for the tips I colour code all my documents, trees, files, etc. I have blue paternal grandfather, green paternal grandmother, red maternal grandfather and yellow maternal grandmother. I have a few names that appear on both sides of my tree and it helps at a glance. It would be great if we could use multiple colours. I could colour code for DNA matches and living people as well making things easier to see at a glance.
I was on the fence about starting to use Roots Magic, but this feature just sold me. Next, I'll want to chime in on the request for the color feature to permit multiple colors. And one last piece that I would request is for a place to annotate the meaning of each color I added. (I don't have any Browns in my family, but I might remember 'YELLow' as a favorite color for living folks.)
I'm glad I could help. Did you see my video about cleaning up place names ruclips.net/video/PGv9yUqWC_Q/видео.html You're going to love what you're able to do! I'm glad you liked the YELLow for living people.
It’s not colour coding but I use capitals for the first name of my direct ancestors. Makes it much easier to work out which sibling is the most important, or when following a line down when there are lots of people with the same names. My tree is quite large. I know the standard is to capitalise last names but I will often make the surnames in less important branches when I have two branches with the same last name.
That's not something I've heard of before. That's interesting. As for the standard of capitalizing surnames, some viewers have pointed out that this doesn't work with many names that are English based. The capitalization actually displays the name incorrectly. Yet, I still use capitals out of habit.
I like the color labeling or coordination things. This would help me stay organized and appealing to the eyes. I want to know how to get better at syncing ancestry, familysearch, myheritage and or Wikitree. An update video please. Thanks
Did you see this updated syncing video? ruclips.net/video/NXPTzj6WgqQ/видео.html There isn't a way to sync with MyHeritage unless you use their program. WikiTree also doesn't have a syncing program.
Great ideas. You have given me some great ideas. I now have a way to keep some people I think are the descendants of my 3rd great grandfather but I have not been able to prove their relationship. I am going to start using some of these ideas today. Love these videos about Roots Magic. Please do more. I like Bruce but sometimes he gets really deep and I am not that advanced. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Rebecca. So long as folks keep watching the RM videos and giving me new questions to answer, I'll keep making the videos. I love Bruce a ton, like a genealogy-brother. He's so involved with all of the intricacies of the program that I can see how sometimes he's too deep. I just try to make things approachable so that somewhere between Bruce and I (a RootsMagic Fan Girl), you'll figure out how to do what you need.
So I miss spoke in the chat on how I color code my DNA relatives. (Though you can do it that way as well). I make a group names DNA Lines. And I use the custom fact DNA relationship. In that fact I put in DNA match to XXX (kit initials), DNA Connection, or Common Ancestor. So when I make the group, or updated it, I will filter by data fields and use the field of DNA relationship exists. And the reason why I use a group is because I can always come back to it, even if I have used another color coding for another reason for a particular research question.
I use color coding for my family in Family Tree Maker and I love especially the fact that people can have several colors (up to 8 colors). This way I can easily see where two lines of ancestors overlap. Does look like RootsMagic has more colors and options for color coding (like coloring living people) than FTM though.
Oh my goodness! Coloring the PLACE could be invaluable as I'm trying to discover the parents of a 2nd great grandmother and after researching literally a thousand matches, one of the few things that seem consistent are places!! But with such a large tree/database, finding those people has become another headache. Gonna hafta try this!!
While I was working on a case of unknown great-grandparents, I put color symbols in the suffix box on Ancestry to track which Leeds chart column the person belonged to. Getting the symbols there was no problem, but getting them to stay there when I made edits was a problem. They kept disappearing unless I took a particular path to make edits (which I never remembered to do!). I've pretty much given up on using the colored symbols in the suffix box. I wish that Ancestry would offer a way to color code our trees. I have the Legacy software. I hope that it has color coding capabilities. I haven't had time to learn fully what Legacy can do for me. Thanks for another helpful video. Stay safe out there!
Pinwheel girl is right about adding colored images but that drives me nuts! The reason is then that picture becomes a picture hint to me on Ancestry. If Ancestry would disallow sharing of the 'placeholder graphics', then I would suggest what Pinwheel girl says. However, the reason we use genealogy software is because many of the online trees don't have the capabilities to analyze data the way the software can. While it would be nice to color code and so forth, I think that's where the MyTree Tags come into play. It's their solution to color coding, filtering, and so forth. ruclips.net/video/PyiDzA-beA8/видео.html
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics The MyTree tags are great, but you have to click on the person to see that you even have them tagged, and then click again see what the tags are. The symbols that I put into the suffix box show up in the tree view (at least in pedigree view) without me having to click on the person. It was very helpful to me on a very complicated case that I was helping with to be able to see which Leeds column head the person connected through. The "at a glance" is what I'm looking for. I don't think that the symbols that I use in the suffix box count as images, at least not the kind of images that are used in the picture section (like profile pictures). These are symbols that are copy/pasted into the suffix box. As I understand it, Ancestry ignores the suffix box, so it shouldn't be sharing these symbols as hints. If I am wrong, please let me know and I will remove them.
I would definitely need multiple colors because I have multiple relatives who have common ancestors (like, 7-12 or more generations back- the relatives with a common ancestor probably never knew they were distant cousins or whatnot when they were living!) I have 1 ancestor from the 1500's, 3 of whose children are direct ancestors- 1 through my father's line, 1 through my mother's line, and 1 through my uncle's by marriage line. Try to color code that, lol!
Having spoken to the RM programmers, it's in the works. It's just not out yet. However, make sure you submit your feature request to them so let them know what you're looking for.
How do I color code a group I created (i.e. Veterans). Once I add someone to the group, will they automatically get the color code? Everytime I add someone to the vet group, i assumed that they will be assigned that color but no. I am having to add the color everytime i add them to the group. Thanks in Advance
I would also like to be able to colour code by generation. I do it informally now when I have something like 4 generations of John Sutton’s married to an Ann or several related families in the same small town to work out why certain people crop up together. On the old paper files I could colour code the folders or use a highlighter but on the computer I’m forced to add the colour as a tab or use the colour as a middle name - which confuses search engines. It might also help to finally work out if the Ann Sutton who married Robert Sutton was his cousin, sister-in-law, niece or one of the second Sutton family in the town.
Based on DNA results, my family tree appears to collapse at some point. This feature may help to trace the possible collapse; multiple colors might be even more efficient. ❤️

Quite true.
I really wish they'd allow more than one colour. That would help so much. Thank you

Darn. Mobile genealogy just hasn't caught up to our lifestyle, aye?
YES would love to be able to multi colour code

You can do this by placing a color in the picture window or as a colored "frame" around a person picture already there.

Ooh. That would be a cool way to color a tree.
How big of a tree can Roots Magic accommodate? I have approximately 9600 ancestors dating back 600 years.

Yes. Multiple colors would be so helpful for your goals.

MS Excel can tri-shade diagonally and so on
Yes, but didn't I make this clear that the tutorial was about using RootsMagic?

Can you export Roots Magic not as a .GED file but as .csv?

I don't believe so in terms of the family tree. They do allow you to color-code your DNA matches. ruclips.net/video/nLKfRykQ-GI/видео.html
Multiple color coding would be better.
Agreed.
