  • Taxis play an important role in rural Alaska where many people don't drive and weather conditions are extreme. In Bethel, Alaska, there are A LOT of cabs - with 66 cars serving a population of just over 6,000.
Naim Shabani is the manager of Kusko Cab, the largest cab company serving this unique bush Alaska city. #bethel #alaska

Speaking as a displaced alaskan, I have had the opinion for some years now that anytime something exists in the lower 48 and gets popular, it often exists first or even better in AK. Like telehealth is pretty new down here, but in AK CHAP has been around for longer than telehealth was a concept. Who needs a dozen apps when you've got Kusko Cab?

i wish someone did a documentary on the bootlegging that used to be involved with cabbing. im not saying this sarcastically, but im serious. back when i lived there with my mom in the mid 2000s it used to be so common that you can just ask ANY bethel cabdriver where to score a jug. that would of been a good, heart breaking, cold reality of how bad it used to be with bootlegging in bethel. im sure its still bad now, but back then im sure it was worse before the liquor stores

I had jobs in Bethel when I was in high school as a dispatcher in the 1970's.You don't reach your destination til the cab has picked up other customers along the way. Road and town population has doubled

Not sure how I came across this..but I live in a small town in northeast Pennsylvania. Our entire county population, year-round, is about 14k. We are less than 2 hours from New York City..if you drive. We have no public transportation, and ONE TAXI that’s somehow banned any competition through our local Govt-no Uber or Lyft. Our 1 taxi runs ONLY 9am-4:30 pm Mon-Sat. A few weeks ago I was unable to get a ride from neighbors and ended up paying $32 for a round trip to our post office, less than 1/2 mile total. (I’m legally blind). My daughters plan on moving me at some point this fall.

On average, what would a driver make per day?
My family and I are thinking of moving to Alaska and my wife is a taxi driver.

Alaska is slated to have billions pumped into it to develop the entire state, roads and bridges connecting it all. Enjoy while it lasts; )

I doubt if anybody will want to take a road trip from Anchorage to Bethel! No, they need to keep it airplane only to get there and the town a cesspool of trash and dirt to keep its bush character and charm!

Old timer No that’s 100% not true at all. In fact it couldn’t be further from reality. I have been to Alaska , lived there briefly. You can’t access 95% of the state except by air, boat . Heck like 80% plus of the entire states population live in Anchorage. It’s a very high percentage , i don’t remember the number exactly.

Jon Stewart I haven’t been to Bethel , all I was told is stay far away lol. I do know it’s a major hub for a lot of villages in , and out.

expanding the Alaska road system to Nome, Kotzebue, Wales, etc and with underground tunnels between the diomede Islands to Siberia would be good. Even a road to King Salmon or kodiak Island would be good. just look at the channel between England and France.
