Topeak Explorer Rack on Specialized Turbo Creo for Bikepacking and Bike Touring - MTX Bag Used

- I am in a poor connection area so I have to make this video short. I am cooking up some Miami rides for y'all.
PLEASE BE AWARE THE SEATPOST SIZE I ORDERED IS A 30.6
This is the Topeak Explorer rack (without a spring) mounted on the frame of a Turbo Creo SL, the bad being used is a Topeak MTX (the one that extends to the top and has panniers that fold on the sides)... the hardest part of the installation here is getting the dropper post disconnected - it is connected by a tension latch that must be taken out.
The process goes like this:
1. loosen seat clamp (so you can manipulate the seat post)
2. push the dropper cable toward the frame (this gives you more slack)
3. detach the dropper seat from the tension cable latch
4. pull the seat post out and install the new seat post mentioned in the video
5. reattach the seat to the dropper tension cable
6. lock the new seat post in the desired place
7. start mounting the rack (yes, directly to the frame, I used tape to protect direct contact points, you do not need the disc brake specific one - 2 screws attach to the rear-bottom triangle, and 2 screws attach to the seat post, the rest are used to hold the rack from swaying back and forth, they attach directly to the rack x 4 screws)
I can answer any installation questions in the comments below!

I use the same bag setup on my Creo. I use only 1 strap to the seat with success. Creos are awesome!!!
Wow, and it's stable from going side to side? thats dope!
Thanks for confirming this setup works! I wrote specialized after ordering my Creo SL and they told me a rear rack can only support 5lbs on this bike, which doesn't seem right. Have you had any issues or is this still working out great for you?
i had way more than 5 lb in it. I've ridden with prob 10-15lb in it with snacks, water, bikepacking stuff. the rack is rated for 50lb, and it's attached to the rear triangle by 2 screws
(the rear triangle piece is made of a metal alloy, not carbon fiber)
It's crazy to me that anyone would sell a drop-bar ebike without fenders and racks.
Totally agree, especially at that price
How do you put on the replacement seat post collar needed to install my topeak rack?.. im assuming u have to totally take out the seat post..but im concerned ill screw up the dropper mechanism?
remove the seat post, and then disconnect the dropper post from the seat post... then you can install the seat holder ring that has the rack attachment... the dropper mechanism is just a metal string with a latch, you just unlatch it... its connected by tension so you wont really mess it up if you unlatch it, you just relatch it once you install the seatpost ring
I've got exactly the same Creo (2020 Comp Carbon Evo). So far I used it only for gravel tours in the mountains around. But it also would be nice tours with my wife with some luggage/bags. I knew about htis solution but was afraid if the carbon frame supports this/is made for the extra "force" in the saddle tube. I would be less worried with the alloy frame, which is also cheaper if something happens. Have you asked your dealer or Specialized directly if they allow this solution for the Creo with the carbon frame?
I totally understand what you mean, I would never want to damage the frame either. I have not asked the dealer, tbh i'd like to know directly from specialized... but most if not all of the force is [downward] on the metal part of the frame - the rear triangle uses aluminum (you can check by tapping, and the rack attachment points in the back are part of that aluminum rear) and then rests that weight on the wheel, so no real weight is added [and stresses] the frame, respectively. I would never overload this bike with over 50lbs of cargo though - its good enough for a weekender/ couple days of cargo, but not touring for weeks/ months imo. With that being said - there was a professional who did tour with that being said type in "ruta chingaza bikepacking Instagram" and click on the revelate design page - this bike was used with light cargo by the bikepacking org crew; you can also see it in action on the video "lael rides alaska" on the radavist. that's where I got the idea to put this rack on.
@@nateums ok, thank you! I wrote my dealer, let's say what he says. I was mostly thinking in longer daytrips with my wife, where I don't wnat to carry a backpack all day long. Maybe also a few days trip with hotel/B&B (next year...) but no camping stuff. Don't expect much happening on my YT channel... ;-)
I have an answer from my bike shop here in Germany. They clearly say, it's not allowed, the seat tubes of the Creo are not designed for the extra load. This doesn't really convince me, because the special seat post clamp is from Specialized itself for the Diverge model. Which is lighter and without motor, so I doubt that the Diverge frame is stronger than the Creo frame. I guess the answer is just to calm down customers/to avoid any warranty issues later. But as I'm already near the weight limit, I would soon pass it with a rack and bags. I will wait 1-2 years more until the standard warranty ends, enough time to loose some weight. With 10-15kg less I would have less fear.
Update: I wrote my bike shop my "doubts" and they asked Specialized directly. They received green light for Creo&Rack with the Specialized clamp, so I will try it (with very little weight as long as I'm so fat...). I suited rack for the Creo for me would be a Tubus Airy... Do you think that will fit?
dumb to not put more mounts on an ebike!
I agree. This creo isn’t really made for touring though, but some set ups still allow touring with it
Does the rack comes with screws to mount it on?
Yes it does, screws into the frame and the seat clamp, and screws for the brackets that hold the rack
Thanks. How's the rack hold up going? Any stress on the frame yet?
@@pcchang87 no stress on the frame at all (you can load up to 50 lbs).. i put some tape around where the screws connect just to protect the paint
Thanks for the video. I went and got the same setup. I love it!
