It is mandatory in South Korea for all men, with a few exceptions, to serve in the military for at least 18 months. It even includes those who are not able bodied. Suga has a shoulder injury from before they debuted in 2013 that he just had surgery on in 2020. The surgery relieved the pain that he's been suffering for over 7 years, but it couldn't completely heal his shoulder. He still has to serve, in an office position, and he actually has to serve 21 months instead of 18. It's because of the neighboring North Korea. It's communist and the two halves of Korea have been at each other's throats for years. There was a lot of talk about exempting the members of BTS because of how much influence they have, but I think that the boys always planned to serve. It's been mandatory since the 50s, so everyone in their parent's generation and some in their grandparents generation has served. JK did a showcase where he performed the songs from the album this past Monday. On Wednesday, it was announced that he has started the enlistment process. He won't be back until June of 2025. ARMY is very sad to see the last four members enlist, especially all together, but the sooner they leave then the sooner they can come back. Oh, and no, JK can't speak very much English. He said recently that he's been studying English but he hasn't learned enough to have a conversation in English. He just studied the lyrics of the songs and worked really hard on his pronunciation.
I think a lot of us that listen to Kpop, got hooked because of the very thing you were talking about. All the songs start sounding the same, a lot of the meaning that you used to find in songs disappears and it’s just following the trends trying to make some money, but the western artists passion for the music has gotten lost. Not in every case, but in a lot of cases. If you think hip hop songs mostly sound like that now days, I highly recommend you listen to Agust D (another member of BTS’s) album D Day. Or watch his music videos for Daechwita, Haegeum, Amygdala, and Snooze. Also RM (the leader of BTS) Still Life and Wildflower. Also, J-Hope (the final rapper in BTS) On The Street, and More. Don’t forget to turn on your closed captions for English subtitles. All those songs are part Korean part English but they have deep and meaningful lyrics that if you don’t understand then the song is only half as good as it could be. Some of those songs also have explanation videos that break down the Korean word play and cultural references that would normally go over non Korean’s heads. My favorite explanation video channel is Bookish Theories, but DKDK TV has some excellent explanations as well.
I0m obsessed with this album, I just love Jungkook's vocals so much and I love the groovy vibes of the whole album in general
