- In my first entry to Dominic Bender's Tree Challenge, I make an ash shillelagh that works just fine as a walking stick AND a clobbering stick.

How to carve a toothpick from a baobab. Remarkable 🤩
Epic fight against horde of enraged melons … 😱
How long did it take to make? Thx

great video but we generally do not remove bark on the
Shillelagh and they`re made from Blackthorn that is why they`re very tough.
well do you want to walk round with half a tree
Is it possible to make a cudgel from other woods by fire hardening it first to make it more tougher
Generally blackthorn is heavy an touch. Keeping bark on it looks nicer when making a shillelagh
Where might we on the West Coast of the US find a wood similar to the Blackthorn?
You would enjoy it more if you invested in a draw knife and built yourself a shave horse.
You can find good draw knives at most flea markets cheap. Just refurbish them. A shave horse is a fun project and will bring you hours of enjoyment. You can find ideas and plans right here on RUclips.
Good video with a touch of humor, blackthorn is not an option here in the states so any heavy hardwood will do. Good job, I like it.
Roberts.... I was looking for information on walking sticks and stumbled across your demo. Outstanding!! Love your sense of humor and special effects. Nice you would include your unsuspecting kids too, LOL. Really nicely done. Thanks for sharing..... Ax
Thanks!
Very nice!
That turned out beautiful! Nice job. Now I think I'll try one 🤔😊
Just stumbled on this video. The wood looked pretty solid whatever it was and It would no doubt put a hurting on anybody that got hit with the business end of it. I bought a stick like that and keep it next to the front door as a last resort type of weapon.
What was the super glue used for?
That was crazy..crazy good.
Thank you!
Really enjoyed this video. I've made several of those. Liked yours a lot.
nice job Robert good luck in the challenge.
Thank you Opa!
To be nitpicky, a shillelagh is traditionally made of black thorn. Aside from that, quite nicely done.
Thank you! I wish I had the right materials, and time, but at least this one is unique.
Actually it's made from hawthorn , the only thing Irish is the music and I think the wood is birch😉
Actually faction fighter used oak, Hawthorne, and Blackthorn. It was based on availability. Blackthorn became popular because of it's rapid growth. As a Bata crafter myself any number of woods make excellent Shillelaghs. Do your research before spouting off your facts.
I'm all confused now I thought he said he didn't know what type of wood it was and now its made from 3 different types. Me silly Irish man. And I wasn't taking anything away from the man's work a very grand job
David O'Rourke All the 19th century shillelaghs I've seen are blackthorn. Was hawthorne used way back ago? I'm also wondering if different counties preferred different woods according to availability. Any info would be very welcome.
Nice work!
Thank you!
cool project for the challenge. A lot of work. I am impressed. Thanks for showing
Thank you!
I LIKE IT! Great job!
Thank you!
Bit of an old video to be commenting.......but, I found using a wire wheel on an angle grinder works best for getting the bark off on projects like this.
Will have to keep that in mind next time I need to strip bark. Good idea!
Looks great!!
Thank you!
You bet!! Btw I subscribed! I hope I can earn yours too.👌🏽
I thought I had previously, but I'm now subscribed. :)
Sweet! Thank you a ton man!
Nice job!!
Beautiful
Thank you!
Great project! Thanks for taking the time to make and film it. Subscribed.
As a matter of fact this is not a shillelagh but a bata stick, wich is basically a longer version of the shillelagh.
Nice but why didn't you started off with a thinner branch? And since you decided to use a thick branch why didn't you shaped it roughly using an hatchet? You really went down the hardest road lol.
This is so cool!
Thank you!
How about using a hatchet to remove lots of the Waste?
If you wont to try something try a coconut it will give you more feed back as a coconut is the same thickness as a human skull .Thanks for sharing .
Interesting idea, thanks!
Should try straighten the stick then go from there. Get a heating gun, then make a 3 sided box. Cut two holes holes in boards an use a car scissor jack an heat up where bends are an do 1/4 turn an then let wood cool before continuing to straighten
I like it!
Thanks!
DRAWKNIFE then spokeshave, anyway nice end result.Thinking of making myself one, thanks for the vid.
Gotta have a drawknife first, I had to buy the spokeshave just to see how I liked it.
@@ManhattanWoodProject -ferrier's rasp also works wonders for something like this. You basically want bowyers tools.
Great job, one suggestion, invest in a couple good draw knives :)
i just use Blackthorn, leave bark on and put lead in the handle but yours is a good effort.
Nice, I may have to try to put lead in if I make another one. Thanks!
Thats cool, good luck in the challenge
I Really need a Social Distanciening stick right now lol..watching this 2020 covid19 😅😷
It looks a lot like apple. Ash is mostly straight even the branches. imho
Think it's a little thick they are meant to be black thorn but they also use hawthorn and paint it black. They also say what's the best time to cut a stick from a tree? .... Answer " when you see it" if not it would be gone when you go back to cut it out lol.BTW I used to take a friend to show him the blackthorn tree he was a towny . We used to gather the slows from them "bit like a plumb" he made slow gin from it.
The black is from coating it in butter and baking it.
As an Irish man I can forgive the bollox at the end as the video was brilliant and your kids clearly had great crack playing 👍🏽
High praise, I was expecting to get my teeth kicked in by everyone Irish out there. :)
ManhattanWoodProject 😂 We aren’t that bad unless your messing with out fiddles and Guinness 😂👍🏽👍🏽
Beautiful, but we don't have a lot of hard wood in new Mexico
That's true, but you have Toas and all the hippies and mexicans and turquoise, so you should be good to go.
Nice stick but the black comes from the Black Thorn wood with the bark turning Black when it is cleaned and finished with shellac.
Angle grinder with a tiger disc on it , then just finish sand it and done.
A drawknife and rasp would have worked very well.
Looks like the Black Locust we have in the front yard.
Might be, who knows?
Put your sander in a vice, your work will go much faster and you will have better control of your subject [the wood].
Good idea!
The piece of wood you used was from a Cherry or Plum. Most likely Pin aka Bird Cherry. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_pensylvanica
Might be cherry, I'm still not sure where I got the branch.
10 minutes of my life I will Never get back.
Too bad I don't get that 10 minutes, I'd love to use it to get a little more sleep.
Sorry you can only call it a shillelagh if it’s made from blackthorn or Holly ☘️ other wise it’s just a stick.
It looks like black locest , good for fence post and fire wood , my spelling is off on that type of tree
Very nice shape
Thanks, I think it looks a lot nicer than if I had just spun it on a lathe.
The wood was not ash. Ash doesn't have rough bark like that. Also ash is a straight, not knarly like that piece of wood. More like elm bark but the wood finished up lighter colour than elm. Hmmm Iron wood? Whatever... looks good when you finished it. Happy whacking!
Might have been elm, I did cut down an elm tree in our old back yard a few years back.
Most likely its shag bark hickory.
All-right, hand over that shalayleh!
You can have it over my bloody dead body! :)
I'd like to make one of these out of Jarrah.
Try using the chisel bevel up
Also, it looks really good. Thanks for sharing
Nice
This isn't a shillelagh. He can call it whatever he likes. But, authentic shillelagh's are made in Shillelagh, County Wicklow, Ireland, and of Irish blackthorn.
Bitch you are a rat
That's like saying Champaign isn't Champaign unless it is made in Champaign.
You need to shorten the spoke shaves blade to do what u were trying to take bark off. Not so agresive.
I enjoyed your video very much and it looks like you've got a great Slater out of it.no offense but I would have liked it better if RUclips eat something other than food. I would I live in South Georgia we have Ash down here we have hickory we got dogwood. Well now I pay more attention to these crooked branches thanks
Chainsaw sound effect 👍😂
You must hate melons more than you hate dogs lol.
Possibly the worst shill vid on RUclips. However, your, “Honey when’s”, but did make me smile.
When is your next video? bzzzzzzzzzzzz !!
Not sure when the next video will be, I'm moving and will have a much smaller shop. I have a lot of pens I want to try turning, so I may transition to smaller projects to fit the new shop.
Hello. Bello, the lower part however, in my opinion, deserves a more ... "metallic" terminal
Turn your chisel over to control depth
First i like your shaley and i also liked what you said to yoyr wife. That was cool
It's a very hard wood when seasoned
omg that's some powersaw lol
It would of been easier to clamp the sander in the vise and press wood to sander
So you are using actually power tools , mmm
your Stamm
Yup, it was a lot easier and quicker than sanding by hand.
What you should have done is she really good and then bigot into the shape we're to be straight and then let it Harden and you'll stay like that for a long long time that's what you should have done because did you have equipment Rican hook it up to something then heat it up then then stick it in his clap thing it and then clamping where everything is kind of rats perfectly straight that's what you should have done your sheleighly whatever you want to call it it looks okay
Now you just have to weigh down the handle.
BOOM.. luvit
Well they used animal dung as well
L' intéret ????
Shillelaghs are Blackthorn.
Considering you used a power sander you fucked about a lot.
And defence against melon attack isn't a massive concern where I live. But try that shit in Brighouse and see what happens...
dbl thumbs up
Turn the chisel!!
need a draw knife
Yup, if I do something like this again I'll probably buy a draw knife.
beautiful job with what you had
I have a draw knife and it peels bark very well.
Draw knife? I'm thinking more along the lines of "chain saw". lol
Even an axe would have done the job!
👍🏻😎
Verrue simple
Definitely not ash. Possibly locust.
Might be, I still have no idea where I got that branch.
That would be cherry
Чем овощи -то виноваты ?
your stick matches your mind Crockett .😄
I so want to make one of these then go bash some watermelons!
Watermelons would be fun, but the thinner rind on a cantaloupe means more mess with less energy. :)
Great tip!
Well, a competent woodworker wasn't on this video. He also didn't have a clue about what a shillelagh is. A true shillelagh is only made from Blackthorn (this is why it's black!) not Ash. In Scotland and Ireland the shillelagh is taken seriously (did you know there's more than one type?). I would suggest this rank amateur avoid contact with the Scots and Irish until he learns what he's doing!
Wilderness outfitters
It would definitely go well with outfitters, but it was a heck of a lot of work just to make the one. Making dozens or hundreds, well, that might just make me start to hate them. :)
That's a Cane.
Almost looks like a birch wood.
Might be, I never did find out for sure. Definitely bashes fruit like an ash baseball bat though. :)
+ManhattanWoodProject
From its shape, the look of its bark, and how you've described it as being heavy and dense...it might be Whitethorn (also known as Hawthorn) which is a very common hedging plant in Ireland. I very much doubt its Ash, which grows pretty straight, and the bark of which is much smoother. Hurley sticks are made from ash for this very reason (straight grain that is, with a turn at the base of the tree)...plus its 'springiness'.
Incidentally, a lot of Irish folklore is attached to the Whitethorn, and where a lone one grows in the middle of a field it's rarely cut down or removed as they are known as 'fairy trees' which are the gateway between our world and the one where the 'little people' dwell. In fact a few short years back in County Clare, a major road construction project had to be altered due to a lone Whitethorn being in the middle of the planned route, and consequently the road had to be diverted, rather than disturb the tree. So, I hope you didn't cut down a Whitethorn, and draw trouble on yourself.
The bark sorta looks like birch, but his constant comment on its weight makes me think some member of prunus species. Cherry, plum, Hawthorn, etc.
Chizel the wood the other way.
Will do.
Hitting rocks, smart... it was a nice stick.....
Water is gross
Lower your grit
Man you ruined the video with a lame overplayed, overlong joke.
Ash is an O.K. wood for a walking stick but not a beater.
That wood they use for baseball bats isn't good to make a beater?
@@joeleek9976 Ash is sometimes used in baseball bats not specifically
for its strength but that it is a lighter hardwood.
I wouldn't use it as a beater as there are much better choices out there.
I have ash walking sticks and they are fine.
I have hawthorn walking sticks and
they are tough as hades itself.
@@dlighted8861 ash has an interlocking grain structure like hickory. This would make it disproportionately strong for it's density.
@@joeleek9976 this will go on forever.
I give in and say you are right simply to stop the blather.
So much for people to be allowed their opinions.
@@dlighted8861 my bad. I was thinking for bows. A sticks ability to bend isn't an indicator of it's impact resistance.
No.
Okay.
Why are you doing demonstration videos .seriously learn the trade before passing that off as a piece of traditional heritage your in no position to pass off as if your a local
I do my videos because I enjoy making and sharing how I made my projects, and hopefully inspiring others to make something too. I am absolutely not a master woodworker (or shillelagh maker, not sure which trade you reference), but most woodworkers on RUclips aren't masters and yet are still able to make great projects and videos that inspire thousands, even millions, of people to at least consider trying something outside their realm of expertise each day.
Also, I can't figure out where I try to pass my version of the shillelagh off as a piece of traditional heritage or pass off that I'm a local (from Ireland, I assume). New Mexico (in the U.S.) is quite far from Ireland, and I made the shillelagh because it was what the shape, size, and weight of the wood inspired me to make out of it.
Thanks for commenting!
I never herd you say that you were Irish, I never herd you say you were a master in wood craft. But what i did see was someone that loves working with timber, & as you said that you hope it inspired others to try something new.
The name of the walking stick comes from the village of that name in Co Wicklow. And any walking stick of that nature is given that name.
Nice job on making the walking stick. And this is coming from an Irish man.
Ps I would love to see the RUclips channel & work of the fella that was putting your work & channel down.
Well that says it all. 2 subscribers on his channel. And doesn't even know what a puffball mushroom is. And that the cloud of dust when hit are the spores coming out & they can end up in your lungs. I know that when I about 7 or 8.
Don't put someone's chanel down, just because you don't like it.
Why don't you make a walking stick if you think your so good!!
Thanks! Don't worry about the haters, they'd explode if they didn't have something to look down on. :)
