My old man used to finish them by soaking them in linseed oil and shoving them up the chimney to cure the soot from the fireplace would bond with the linseed oil and give them a beautiful deep glossy black finish.
Very nice Mike, it looks exactly like the ones the American tourists think we all carry here. Love that rasp too.
Cheers mate, glad you liked it, yeah i don't use that rasp much, but is decent really.
Using that curtain rod end was a brilliant idea. Never seen anything like that saw rasp, looks like a really useful tool.
Thanks Timbo, glad you liked it mate, i very lucky i have a great big box of scrap stuff i save just for ferrules, and stuff like that!
I recently got into making walking sticks and I found a nice piece of oak I thought looked like it could be a shilelagh. I went to RUclips to get a bit of direction and this is the first video that came up. I got a good laugh when you said it was your first time as well, it came out great and I'm hoping mine does too
I'm glad you found my video mate and that it helped, i hope your stick turns out great and just how you want it!
Looks great, think I'll try my hand at one.
Cheers mate , you did it , wonderful. Enjoy your lovley shilkegh☘️…
Thanks mate, glad you liked it, will do more if i can get the wood.
@@WeaponCollector push you the thump’s… hope you get the wood and make more 👌☘️
A band saw makes short work of taking off the branch stubs, and a 4-in-hand rasp for smoothing. No blackthorn here, but I've made many apple, pear, and elm walking sticks.
Looks great. One of my favorites projects that you’ve done. Like you said, not complicated but that’s how it was back in the day.
Thanks mate, glad you liked it, that means a lot, i was really happy with how this came out, and do really like making any of the "stick" builds, always fun and makes a useful and forever legal item!
Great work Mike that looks excellent mate.
Thanks Stu, i'm really happy with it, want to make more now, i quite enjoy doing any stick projects to be honest, glad you liked it mate.
one of the most beautiful shilelaghs I have ever seen...👍👍
Thank you, that means a lot, glad you liked it
nice shed you have there .. A knobkerrie, also spelled knopkierie (Afrikaans), is a form of wooden club, used mainly in Southern and Eastern Africa. and this as you say is a Shillelagh.. which is similar.
Cheers Neil, and cheers for the info.
Excellent example of how to do it simply thank you have subscribed 👍🏴
That’s a nice fighting stick there.
Cool! the best video I have seen so far on making a Shillelagh.
I've only got 3 words for you ; I like it !!
Thanks Sheldon, glad you liked it!
I love making walking sticks in my spare time my dad taught me how and they are so much better than what I can buy and its more fun and that sheileghlegh is really cool
Thanks, Its great making them isn't it Izzy, i really like making walking sticks too, glad you liked mine, i have a plans for a new one soon!
I look forward to the new sheileghlegh
Do you know of anyone that supplies seasoned, unfinished Blackthorn sticks in the US or Canada? I was under the impression the Blackthorn bush only grew in Ireland, is that correct?
@Zulutime I don't but you
I have a cheap Blackthorn walking stick, plain but very sturdy. About 39 inches long, weight 11 oz. Its perfect for stray dog that want to bite you. However, the stick you made is at a higher level. Bravo
Excellent example of how to do it simply have subscribed 👍🏴
Looks nice! I'll have to try this.
Looks great! I have made a couple of similar walking sticks (unfortunately I don't have any blackthorn) doing all the limb removal, head shaping, etc. with my pocket knife. Fun projects!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it, it always great making you own sticks isn't it.
Turned out nice Mike for first time have ago. Well done
It turned out very well. Interesting video.👍🤝
You've done a really nice job on that, it looks lovely. Plus it has the added advantage of stopping you-know-who and the other one going on about them in every stream lol.
Thanks Zed, glad you liked it, i am really happy with how it came out,
(haha, Yes as soon as i saw Jim getting so more Blackthorn in that video i thought "Ah, i may finally be able to stop people asking me to make one if Jim has some spare!") Jim's a good bloke, was very decent of him to send me a nice seasoned bit like that.
@@WeaponCollector how do we use it combo
@@ajithsidhu7183 lol
@@WeaponCollector why
@@WeaponCollector i feel its hard to use compare to normal stick
your a very skilled artist Mike
Thank you Bob, glad you liked it mate.
Tung oil with a dark stain coloring would be nice for the main body and a clear laquer would be nice for the top.
More knob polishing than a copy of Playboy. Great work Mike, try it out on the milkman.
haha, Glad you .liked it mate, So many innuendos i was struggling to say some things on this video, lol
Great video 👍
Very inspirational!
I wonder if a little braded brass wire work might really dress it up just a little?
thanks - ill try leather dye :) good stick ill have a go .
Great video
We done mate do a test on it for strength good old Irish stick made in the UK take care
Glad you liked it Tony, cheers mate, once my stomach is full recovered i'll do so test mate!
Have you ever tried a Japanese style pull saw? Highly recommended.
I bought a nice walking stick in this style not long ago. I did put a rubber food on it.
I can also recommend an electric power file. Works nicely on wood and aluminum.
Well done Mike.
Glad you liked it mate, No never tried a Japanese style pull saw, but have seen them and they look decent, will have to get on one day.
Very nicely made, it came out really amazing. Maybe one day I will make one. It is a shame that you could not test it because I am sure it is a killer 👍
Thanks John, glad you like it mate, yes you should defo make one of any kind of stick weapons really, they are all good.
Magnifique travail 🙏🇮🇪🇫🇷🇺🇸
That's sweet
Thumbs up from me, good job
Thanks mate, glad you liked it.
Nice.
Cheers mate, nice to see you on, i saw your video and reply to a comment about being busy later, will come over and comment in a bit.
I've always loved war clubs
Thanks mate, glad you liked it.
Thank you for this great video you have inspired to me to make my own shillelagh. I have a Couple of questions if you have time is any dye or paint gonna be OK or does it have to be leather dye? Also you are using varnish only on the knob correct?
Also did you sand the whole shaft too before painting? Or just the knob?
i reckon any paint or dyes will work mate, and yes i only varnish the knob and i sanded it all, just the shaft was less, the head had lots more work, the shaft less work (sounds like i;'m describing a dirty video now, lol)
@@WeaponCollector LOL thank you for the reply brother.
Sik mate!
You should have drilled a hole in the head and put some led weight in it and the end you cut off use to plug the hole back up it would have been a real fighting shillelagh
A little knowledge is dangerous
hi bud could you upload a better quality video of the 80s bsa lightning carbine? would mega appreciate it!
Will do mate, give me a week or two and i'll have it uploaded"!
Your shillelagh turned out great Mike.
I think a Shillelagh definitely has more value I you make it yourself.
I'd like to try & make my own but I have no idea where I'd get blackthorn from.
I have the same problem. I live in New England, in the USA, where there isn't any blackthorn. I'm going to make my shillelagh out of Eastern ironwood. It's probably the best wood I can find over here.
@@Inv1cto I think Iron wood would actually be a great wood to use, it's hard enough & it looks great once it's been worked.
If you make one, you should definitely do a video.
@@eugenevictortooms4174 I plan to, but curing the wood will take a while...
I just ventured a shillelagh of sorts. I live in the southern USA and sweet gum it a tough wood with a very crooked grain. The grain is practically impossible
to split and is resistant to breakage, so that was my choice. My problem was it was more of a walking stick because it had no knob for a handle. So I had a piece
of grapevine about 3 inches in diameter and used a 4 inch piece of that. I drilled a hole in it to match the sweet gum, epoxied it on, and shaped it into a proper knob. Painted it super dark brown/black. Turned out good and functional.
I would say Ireland most likely is where you get blackthorne from
I have a Shillelagh that's well over 100 years old. It was my great-grandfather's. I was covered in thorns. Why did you file off your thorns?
they were just small stubs, seems it would be better to hold the shaft without them if you needed to strike with the ball end.
Did you steam the stick straight before it seasoned or after
No mate, i left it exactly like it was
Cool video A well bro
Thanks Ryan
Cheers bro
Nice one 👍
Thanks Richard
What kind of file is that at 2:53
I think it called a Saw Rasp or Shinto Saw Rasp.
what is that rasp called, looks the business!
Perhaps you mean the Shinto saw rasp?
That is really nice looks like it would give a good whack
Thanks Singh, glad you liked it mate
Well that's almost a knobkirrie. Just had to be more round to be a full knobkirrie. Otherwise nicely done.
Thanks El. glad you liked it.
one in 1000 piece of blk thorn that is. lucky, they usually grow like frankenstein.
I was very lucky with that bit of blackthorn. i was given it by a friend too.
is that a chinese rasp?
Yes, it is mate, or maybe japanese.
ACAB huh? 😒
sorry if that offends, its an old tattoo i had as a drunk teenager that i do not agree with but cant afford to do anything about it
@@WeaponCollector maybe it's a bit aggressive and unpleasant, but as a perfect honest and law abiding citizen I've seen in multiple occasions how that acronym tells the truth...
maybe a "M" as "most" will be better instead of the "A" of "all", but let's say that it's a "poetic licence"... ;-)
These things arnt difficult to do 🤣..... Don't tell Francis McCaffrey that ffs
I know what you mean
Finding the wood is hard and cutting it .
@@FrancisMcCaffrey5 if you getting up driving your car miles cutting blackthorn humping it back to the car driving home unloading repeating the next day making sticks treating them getting orders out I understand there is a lot involved it's full on ....... But if you take 20mins to look at Mike stinnet snake walking sticks you will see the skill level the artwork..... It makes blackthorn stick making look a very basic craft that said if you require a sturdy naturally good looking walking stick stick then blackthorn is hard to beat and macafree crafts is where you should buy.. from what I see......... No offence intended I thought this guys comments mite rattle your feathers 😂
A shillelagh is straight.. you didn't straighten it..
i'm not an expert, i've made one, but i have also seen hundreds of shillelagh's that weren't straight.
Many of the souvenir shillelaghs are shaped much worse. Maybe for a seasoned shillelagh maker, they would’ve cut it shorter and it would’ve turned it into a cudgel, where it would’ve been straight enough to your liking. But it looks great nonetheless.
