his performance is.... I don't have a word that enough to describe his amazingness, so glad that he got the oscar for this but i'm sad knowing that he passed away just a year after... you will be remembered forever.
A well deserved Oscar for this performance, Walter Huston, a Canadian, was one of the finest American actors of the 1930s and '40s. Although little remembered today. Huston (John's father) was a compelling performer in straight drama (Dodsworth is a standout) as well as quirky comedic roles, in particular The Devil and Daniel Webster. If you ever see his name associated with a film, buy it, rent it, watch it. you'll be glad you did.
The old codger who says to Walter Houston. "What are you doing in here. a down and outer?" is actually Jack Holt, father of Tim Holt, the Curtain character.Jack Holt was a cowboy star; the Artist who originated Dick Tracy said he had modeled Tracy "On my favorite movie tough guy, Jack Holt."

John Steinbeck is another author like Travers (the author of the book) who gave great insight into business and economics in his writings. Check out Frank Norri. In Octopus he describes real abuses of monopolies by railroad companies in California. And though a socialist, Upton Sinclair is a good read on abuses in the labor market.
This is my favorite Western with Liberty Valance a close second. I wish Walter spent more time in Hollywood although he obviously learned a lot on Bway. Bogie & Huston are truly memorable in this fine film.
One of the all time classic films directed by John Huston. Great dialogue, great acting and a thoroughly gripping story. Walter Huston was simply marvellous as the eccentric, grizzled elderly gold prospector.
I recommend that that you see "Dodsworth" (1936). It's hard to believe Dodsworth and the old prospector are played by the same actor. I suppose that's why they call it acting.

This movie is the most perfect allegory of that famous quote by Henry Ford: “Money doesn't change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out, that's all.” A timeless and still very relevant masterpiece!
He absolutely stole the scene. Such an expressive face, he ran the scene with his eyes alone... unusual for a kid that young. My husband's cousin worked with him on Baretta.
"Gold ain't good for nothing but making jewelry and gold teeth." I like how the movie starts with a line about how worthless gold is.... and then what follows.
Great monologue, but the thing that sticks with me is the response to it, that gold doesn’t change people, just reveals, and by the end of the film that’s just what’s happened.

In questo film il mitico John Houston uno dei registi capostipidi della scuola dei film western americani sà dosare sapientemente il racconto non rendendolo monotematico come i suoi classici western ma alla base di esso c'è una vicenda umana molto toccante e drammatica che fotografa a pieno un determinato periodo della storia americana cioè quello della febbre e della corsa al oro avvenuto come fenomeno sociale e storico prima della cosiddetta febbre del petrolio cioè la corsa alla ricerca dell'oro nero il racconto parla di tre poveri disperati che volevano dare una svolta alla loro vita trasformando la propria povertà in ricchezza andando alla ricerca del oro e rischiando la loro vita per questo nel paese dei banditi cioè il Messico il film è perfetto sotto ogni punto di vista e mi meraviglio come non abbia potuto vincere una valanga di premi Oscar gli attori del film sono tutti eccezionali per la loro grande interpretazione Humprey Bogart " IMMENSO " ci sono stati molti grandissimi film americani nella storia di Hollywood passati inosservati ed ora capisco anche perchè gli americani non abbiano mai saputo apprezzare il cinema straniero ed italiano perchè molti dei loro capolavori sono rimasti senza riconoscimenti importanti al Accademia del cinema risultando solo uno sforzo uno spreco ed un impegno economico e di risorse enorme senza risultato sè non gli incassi da botteghino nei cinema e nei drive in.

Howard is giving the labor theory of value. The capitalist Adam Smith, and the Communist Karl Marx both adopted the labor theory of value. But there's more to it. There's a matter of what catches people's fancy. People write best selling novels, and get rich. But most books don't sell very many copies. The difference isn't determined by how much labor went into them. There is the difference between skilled, and unskilled labor. There is good, and bad management, and entreprenurial activity.
