  • History of Ice Cream
Hello friends, today's video is going to talk a little about the history of ice cream.
The first account of the origin of ice cream dates back to more than 3 thousand years ago, in the East. The Chinese used to prepare a paste of rice milk mixed with snow, something similar to today's shaved ice cream.
In the more recent past, around 1900 years ago, in the Roman Empire, Emperor Nero sent his slaves to the mountains to fetch snow, which was used to freeze honey, fruit juices and pulp.
But it was Alexander the Great of Macedon who is best known as the introducer of ice cream to Europe. It is believed that the leader would have brought from the East a mixture of fruit salad soaked in honey, which was kept in clay pots buried in the ground and kept cold with the winter snow.
In the 14th century, when the famous Venetian explorer Marco Polo returned from his trip to the East, he brought back a recipe for making ice cream that was very similar to the current one.
In the 17th century, when the monarch Francis I was on campaign in Italy, he decided to take his son, the Duke of Orleans, a bride, the Italian noblewoman Catherine de Medici. She is credited with introducing ice cream to France. In that same country, in 1660, Procopio Coltelli opened, in Paris, the first ice cream parlor in the world.
The granddaughter of Catherine de Médicis married Charles I of England in 1630 and, according to her grandmother's tradition, also introduced ice cream among the English. British colonists then brought ice cream to the United States.
In 1851, the United States experienced one of the most important moments in the history of ice cream: milkman Jacob Fussel opened the first large-scale ice cream factory in Baltimore. Then it was copied by others in Washington, Boston and New York.
In 1879, also in the United States, the “Ice Cream Soda” was invented, which would later become known in Brazil as Vaca Preta.
The appearance of the cone has two versions: one that would have appeared in 1896, in Italy, and another that it would have been invented in 1904 in the United States. The popsicle appeared in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century.
Arrival of ice cream in Brazil.
The first Brazilian ice cream parlor was opened in 1835, when an American ship docked in Rio de Janeiro with 270 tons of ice. Two merchants bought the shipment and started selling fruit ice cream. At the time, there was no way to preserve frozen ice cream, so it had to be consumed right after preparation. Ice cream parlors announced the right time to drink it.
Another curiosity that occurred in Brazil is that ice cream came to be considered the forerunner of the women's liberation movement. That's because, to taste it, women had to practice one of their first acts of rebellion against the current social structure, invading bars and pastry shops, places occupied until then almost exclusively by men.
Evolving in small steps, this delicacy began to be distributed on an industrial scale in the country in 1941, when U S Harkson do Brasil was founded in Rio de Janeiro, in the rented warehouses of the bankrupt Gato Preto ice cream factory. Its first product launched, already under the Kibon seal, was Eskibon.
