Today we are looking at 3 dinosaur games that turned out to be HUGE scams, from the humble beginnings of Historia to one of the OG dinosaur gaming scams which was one of the biggest... Historia. Find out about these two and one more in this mini dive video into 3 dinosaur gaming scams, where one stole $50,000.

Hello - I am one of the ex-devs from Historia, the one who left before everything went wild. I wrote most of everything including the 200+ dinosaur sheet that would have been the evolution tree. I wrote and designed the Kickstarter and was the main face for the game to talk to others. I am ShotgunPunk - truly so.
I left way before he stole money due to going to college and being quite literally the verbal punching bag that kept Snazzy in check. He would have yelled and screamed at the other devs to work harder and go faster if I hadn't been there to temper him. He did so when I wasn't looking. He was the one that pushed this dinosaur game, demanded that we create the largest dino game ever. But I also take some fault in it - he stole from y'all. I should have seen that coming, I should have listened to the people telling me that he was a liar and a cheat and a groomer. I gave him the benefit of the doubt because we had been friends for 6 years by that point.
For that I am sorry. None of the developers got paid - not even me. He paid no one for the artwork, no one for the coding. Not even for the music. He made promise after promise and eventually ended up stealing everything.
Edit: Overexaggerated numbers only because I haven't looked at the sheet in 2 years
After thinking this over - If you, Velocci, want to see what was planned for Historia and how unrealistic it was... I am happy to just hand over the 2 weeks of work and research that me and the paleo guys did. Its that 200+ sheet of progress playables that flowed through each other. Snazz said, and I quote "I want a seamless progression and everyone's favorites"... So I had to make it as large as I did.

i was one of the animators for the depths and honestly it made me sick what colemen did to us and the supporters

The first one didn’t really look like a scam it just looked like a predator getting caught so the game got scrapped for obvious reasons and the rest of the team didn’t wanted Finnish a game that was made by that type of person
yeah i mentioned its the least scammy, although unpaid devs and the lead vanishing to me indicates some money was taken
It's always the trio of problems in these animal simulation games:
1-too many animals planned at once (a certain animal game is in the works, making maps and animal dlc before finishing the base game, I'm looking at you bad boy 🐯)
2-developers promising endless mechanics (the most common, they need to stand out, but it creates a problem)
3-Some fight between developers working on the game that results in several problems and abandonment (the classic and main problem)
And the ones that aren't problematic are just scams to take money from gullible people.
Problem number 1 is also caused by the player base of this genre, which gets disappointed and angry (too easily in my opinion) if the new game has a smaller roster at the start than in already existing games such as PoT and Isle (who have been around much longer and have been able to add content little by little). For example, Isles of Yore (which is still up by the way) was abandoned by players because of it had "too small roster" and too few players.
DLCs and selling additional products before a games released (not including an art book in a kickstarter campaign) is a huge red flag imo

I've never heard of this game but the concept of starting as a specific animal and 'evolving' into new ones is an idea I've had for a long time and now I'm really upset that there's a scam game that exists that was supposed to do exactly that.
EDIT: I feel the need to clarify that, while this is also something I want deeply, a Spore-style game where you choose exactly how you evolve and pick parts wasn't what I was talking about. There are people working on spiritual successors to Spore already. I was talking about a game where you ascend to different species when you hit certain goalposts, sort of like Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.

"The Depths" reminds me of the game "Preshistoric Marine Monsters".
Worked fine in the beginning, but sadly ends absolutely abondended
and unplayable.
The Game was bound on Online-Servers, and no Servers = No Gameplay.
Now we have a really expensive Title-Menu-Simulator!
No Updates, no Words from the Dev's, no glues what could be happened. 🤷♀
So I used to work under Max Wood (the lead dev). I was in charge with designing skins and other assets for Mesozoica. I didn’t know that the game was using tons of stolen assets, shady practices, and they constantly swapped out people. This was due to the Max Wood not paying their developers or artists.
*doesn't see Second Extinction on this list* welp, I'm glad I didn't back any of these ones at least lol

@@VelocciYT you did indeed, and it was a great one :) am just still extremely pissed about the whole thing, I actually really enjoyed the game and won't even be able to play single-player anymore. Ultimate scam.
Poor Robert Fabiani, his models ain't the best... but they keep getting used on scamms... 😢

From my experiences with max….no, or if he did just the bare minimum to seem legit.
to end this video more on a positive note, not all games that try and copy the success of the isle/POT/BOB end up being scams, with the best coming up (with a demo hopefully before the end of this year) being Primeval Horizon. from what i've gathered talking with some of the devs, they're very dedicated to their craft, and seem to be motivated to just make a game instead of making a profit (with lead dev JJ even saying that as long as he lives and breaths on this planet, the game will get finished [or something like that])

I actually was super hyped for this game...I really really hoped for Mesozoica and even tried to find glitches and bugs...I cried when I found out it was a scam...It truly made me rage. Luckily out of its ashes we have Prehistoric Kingdom, and it is GLORIOUS! It is everything I could of hoped for and more. It is the Planet Zoo of the Dinosaur World!
It makes me sad to see these absolutely cool games being hyped and just getting abandoned
Too bad about the depths. I would have loved a water based dino game. I wished more people on path of titans played aquatics.
I didn't really know about any of these. I was burned way back from the Stomping Lands. I learned my lesson then, and ever since I have been rather stingy with early access games. It's a shame that bad actors ruin the genre for a quick scam.
.... are we surprised? Creature survival is like the mmorpg open world genre. Everyone wants it but always turns too ambitious and scammy.

I don't know if Cenozoic Era is a scam game or not, but the dev is a weirdo and has done some straight up scammy stuff in the past. My gut feeling is that it's an asset-dump game that the dev doesn't care about, just to generate income for him.
I find these videos really interesting; the gaming space is not very healthy right now, and being aware of (and calling out junk like this when it happens) will hopefully force greedy devs to smarten up.

Cover the drama that was Mesozoica. And it dropped for $40 in the US if I remember right. Cause was there not an attempted suit against Max from the other devs?
This is just sad, it’s people like this that kill the hope for more awesome Dino games. We just don’t know if we can trust them to deliver.
A pity these things keep happening within the dinosaur indie dev community. I felt awful in hindsight that I had ever interviewed Max Wood on my podcast Prehistory A Traveler's Guide years ago before that scam was exposed. Makes me appreciate that Prehistoric Kingdom was successful and ethical.
This doesn’t surprise me, here lately a lot of games everyone wanted turned out to be used & not really a real game. That’s why I never put money into a game til their actually released & prove to be kept being updated & fleshed out legitimately.

Historia tryin to be like the isle with a predator incident. During legacy one of the devs was caught going after minors and wouldn't you know Dondi defended him because they were friends, up until he was hit with the court documents from the predators own sister which were public so he was forced to change his stance. It happens far too frequently in this genre.

I was one of the supporters for The Depths.
The main dev actively talked badly about me behind my back just because i said the spino's call animation looked weird.
Also the grooming minors allegation is always said against every person who ever decided to ever make a game ever. I never take it seriously. It's just violent and unnecessary witch hunting. It's almost always false accusation
He refused to address the allegations and then disappeared so I have a feeling this wasn't a witch hunt
Even people falsely accused will get scared... How does one prove themselves innocent if there's no way to prove you didn't do something?

No. I got banned from my favorite game because of a false accusation started by a sociopath who had been stalking my Discord for 8 years looking for messages to photoshop just because she felt like ruining my life!
@@ChickenGoogleSoup Again, didn't say it helps. Said people do it. People don't like to just let people get away with ruining their name, whether they can actually save themselves or not. Most of the time when I've seen people go silent, it was people who actually did the crime.

I’ve seen some of the Mesozoica models, and holy crap were they fugly as all hell.
Shrink-wrapping, pronated wrists, the works.
Those models made the models from the likes of JWE look accurate by comparison.
It's so funny to me that "the depths" never released. My parents were the people behind the game "prehistoric marine monsters". A game that, just like the depths, took place underwater. It gained popularity, my parents did everything themselves, and all of a sudden "the depths" came about. PMM (prehistoric marine monsters) lost almost all track, and my parents abandoned the project. They never earned a cent for their game. Everyone who got on their patreon got a free access key to the game. Even people who weren't on their patreon got keys, as "testers". So many people got outraged when the game got discontinued, but I understand why. The depths basically stole all my parents' customers lol

Yes, unfortunately for now its on hold as we faced some dev bottlenecks and equally didnt have the time while balancing our own lives. So for now its just a passion project that is stagnant, i hope to get it back on track one day

We need to give credit to Dondi cause he could just leave the game on legacy version and leave the isle die but he wanted to give us the idea that the had originally when creating the isle, Thats true passion even with the dramas in which he was involved.
Hell no! Dondi is a horrible person who defended a pedophile. Just because he made a nice game does not excuse that, he did not do this out of passion he did it for money
Holy Crap i remember Mesozoica, played some sort of free Demo of it and loved the Game, but then it completly fell off my raidar for some reason and i havent thought about it since. Never knew this is what happened to it Oo Im Glad i never put Money into this
