Needle Felted Hedgehog: Beginner Needle Felting Tutorial

- Learn how to needle felt a cute little hedgehog in about 10 minutes with this step by step tutorial. At the end there's a little bonus section that shows you how I make the green forest pad for the little hedgehogs. This is a great beginner project due to ease and minimal materials. You will need a felting foam, felting needle, a few grams of core wool, a little bit of grayish hedgehog color, teeny bit of brown for the ears, and a pinch of black for the eyes and nose.

Looks pretty simple. I'd like to have known, ahead of time (explanation at beginning of project) the purpose of the 'needling'.
I think that this is done to compress and remove any airspace out of the wool so it's a more defined shape - but not sure - wouldn't rolling the wool do the same thing? This is the first felting project I've watched. There is a lady in town that does really cool centerpieces for your livingroom or over a baby's crib, like a mobile. She does crows, eagles and her owls are splendid!
I think I'll need to watch more of these tutorials. There is a website that sells the kits online & pretty inexpensive in comparison to other hobbies..
One day I think I might try this & hope I don't get frustrated with end product. Maybe this will help with my residual anxiety from a concussion I received at work Aug 2019 & end up off work for almost 7 months ' a really tough time in my life. This might help. Thank you for your time in showing us your very cute hedgehog. Mine would be a girl hedgehog with a crown of multicolored 💐 flowers.
Hi Marnee, thank you for your lovely comment. Yes, you are absolutely correct- the felting needle is barbed and as you poke in and out, it tangles the fibers and compressed them into a smaller shape taking out the airspace. Yes, absolutely amazing felters that create incredible pieces of art!!!! I don't personally have that much patience~~~ hehehehehe. I do it more for instant gratification and stress relief.
I cover the simple cheap materials in my intro course. I love it for those reasons. When I had homeschoolers visiting, I used to have $5 mini kits with a little foam, wool, felting needle. The kids would have hours or fun!

@@WisteriaSuriRanch Ahhh, now that makes sense with the 'needle' - had no idea it was barbed because no one shows that on line, even with all the kits & I instructions/videos (only watched yours but looked at couple others just real quickly tho') I've seen on the internet.
@@marneeklintworth9300 It's quite a magical fun experience- of course, because it is barbed...poking it in your finger is a bit more painful and you learn really quickly where to keep your fingers so you don't poke yourself again! With this reason, you want the crimpier wool fibers that have wool structure which is easier to tangle. It's really a fascinating simple and enjoyable craft. I sure hope you give it a go! I will warn you- it is very very very addicting!!!! Have an amazing day!
I gave up felting as couldn't never do the egg shape
You can make a small sausage shape and then add more wool to one end. Then add some in between to smooth it out. You can also use your hands to squeeze the smaller end and poke at an angle towards the back. It does take some practice :) Remember to have fun with it :) My pig tutorial uses a sausage shape and is fun to make if you want to give that a try. thanks for watching! Have an awesome day!
How would you use plastic eyes
Hi again :) If the plastic eyes have the little stick behind the round part, poke your needle into the wool where you want the eye, put a tiny bit of craft glue on the stick part of the plastic eye and poke in :)
