We used to preemptively spay and neuter all our piggies until our financial situation and sheer number of rescue pigs we had made us switch to reactionary spays and neuters. I definitely preferred when we were able to have your approach and spay before they ever had any issues. we will definitely return to that method as soon as the number of animals we have lowers a bit in the future. We never had any complications on any of our piggies and a flank spay really let them bounce back so quickly. Love seeing you take the initiative and ensure they get the best care they can.

I just see so many pigs with ovarian cysts etc on social media. Seems so common and is such a painful thing for them.

I had my girls spayed after they developed cystic ovary disease. I didn't know that disease was a thing until my first piggie had it. It's an 80%chance that females will get this. I would have rather spayed them at an earlier age. I now have Boars so no problems with that of course. Glad your girls are recovering. ❤🐹

Seems so common sadly! Wish it were seen as important to spay them as rabbits. I get rabbits are more common to spay and neuter as they act out towards humans with their grouchy hormone behaviours, where pigs do not.

I have had some of my piggies spayed in the past because of ovarian cysts .
The one problem with it was one of my piggies was not welcome back into the herd. I tried to integrate her many times but it wouldn't work. Its wort doing as ovarian cysts are painful for them.

Do you think guinea pig rescues should spay / neuter the guinea pigs before they adopt them out? Especially if they are young and healthy?

In a perfect world where they had lots of funding, it would be great to do. I can see why it can't always been done unless the piggy has an issue though for rescues and shelters.

I was looking in to spaying but my vet didn’t recommend it unless needed
But it’s also so very expensive
My vet is very experienced and a bit on a drip side … 2 to 3 thousands per spay
I can’t afford it to be honest

That is a wild price. Never heard of that for a spay.

That is so much! It is about $400-$500 total here for a flank spay. I just checked the last bill we got for having one of our piggies spayed and with a physical exam and x-rays which revealed the need to spay, it was still under $600. I would recommend shopping around and seeing if there are any vets within an hour or two that have a more sane price estimate.

@@equestrianrosie yes, I have to because just to do an XRay and blood work is about $600, and a new thing is a radiologist fee of $100 that is mandatory and radiologist isn’t even in a office at the time of an XRay
Last time he called me a week later just to confirm vets reading
I have a problem driving on highway so if I need to go further away I need to ask my husband or my daughter which is not always possible
But I will still check around maybe some less expensive clinic around
