I HATE SATIN FABRIC!! | Sewing A Lined Halloween Inspired Cape

  • So for today's Halloween themed episode of sewing machine adventures, I thought I'd try my hand at sewing a line Halloween inspired cape with a fabric I've yet to sew with and that being satin! Now I know I've made a cape before, but I think that was before I got my hands on my sewing machine, so I definitely wanted this Halloween inspired cape to be a bit better made. And although I did struggle at the beginning, and the middle....and the end, I feel like I managed to slightly rescue this Halloween cape! I think the satin lining of the cape was very luxurious, even though it was a right pain to sew! But yeah I don't think it came out too bad! But let me know what your thoughts are on my Halloween inspired cape, and whether we should start to bring back cape wearing as a regular item of clothing, I think it needs to be done!!

Especially with a big pussy cat bow like yours! I know satin is a bit fiddly to sew, but the glamorous finish makes it all worth it!

Until you really know what you're doing, use a pattern to cut your material. It really does help! I know patterns are a PITA, but it will save you a lot of grief in the long run. As for capes: When I was going to college I was dirt poor. Lived in government assisted housing, ate mac-n-cheese and hot dogs for most meals. DIRT poor. Come winter time I didnt on a coat - but I did own a fleece cloak someone had made for me. Nice, heavy weight fleece. It was like wearing a blanket! I got a LOT of weird looks but I didn't care. It was warm and very versitile! 35 years later and I still have that cloak in the closet :D

There’s a reason satin is only 1 letter different than satan. They’re both very alluring and also quite evil.
And we definitely need to bring capes back! Very stylish 🎩
    Great video 🥰

You know, it's nice to see someone else who isn't already incredible at sewing (esp as someone else who stubbornly likes to figure things out for themself)! It may not be perfectly constructed, but it certainly looks great!

My favourite cape ever was the infamous one Madonna wore on a Brit awards years ago that nearly ended up decapitating her during a live performance- I don’t think I’ve ever been so enthralled with a performance as I was when she got pulled backwards down those stairs. Anyway, your cape my love is now my favourite cape. You win cape wars. ❤

Oh that was hilarious! Obviously not for Madonna! 😆😆

Oh Ant, when you said how disappointed you were with yourself over the cape you made, I just wanted to give you a hug. I just felt badly for you. Bias tape is good for trimming a raw edge but it needs to be wider than the one you had for your cape, but your idea was as sound as a pound hun. Also, I have to agree with you Ant, that that eyeball material for the cape was way nicer once it was lined. It looked pretty darn good in my opinion. The cape when it was finished in that wide ribbon looked really very good Ant, considering how much you said went wrong with it. I think it was a win! You will look gorgeous on Halloween!

i love how your cape turned out!!! i know you were disappointed with the stitching showing, but from far away its not noticeable and most people probably aren't gonna look that close. i think the ribbon looks really cute on it too 💜

Hey ant. Don't forget batteries next time you're at the shops. And get yourself a "pinking sheers" it's a zig zag scissors that you use on the edges. It cuts on different bias to keep the fabric from fraying 😊. Always inside out lol. Always make a pattern works so much better than winging it

Hey Ant, thanks for the satin-draped Halloween edition of sewing Machine Adventures!! I think you were being too hard on yourself, but it's all a good learning experience I think we definitely need more capes in the world - especially if you need to cover up a crampy arm!! 🤣🤣

I’ve never had an issue with satin or silk. Just take it slow and not race the machine. I’ve several capes here. Love them. Mine are velvet with satin lining and hoods. Use them every solstice. I learned to sew on an old treadle machine. Still have one. Plus a few electric machines. I’ve way too much stuff!

I'm not sure if what you made is actually a cape. I own 4 of them and you have to be able to swing them in the air. .they just flow. Good try though. ❤❤❤❤
