    I remember going to see Goldeneye at the cinema with my dad when I was 7 years old. The film was rated 12 so I wasn't allowed to have a ticket. My dad bought us tickets for Babe the Sheep Pig instead, and then we just snuck in to see Goldeneye. I genuinely felt like I was Bond for a moment, going to see Bond.

      But that's what he means. "Dr No" is a good film, but it is because it sets up the elements of what makes a good Bond movie, but doesn't really experiment with the formula a lot, like films such as "The World is Not Enough" does

    • @grantmalone
      @grantmalone 3 года назад +10

      @@maniaccop3403 Huh? It's the first film. Literally every single thing in it is an experiment with the formula! It's incalculably more experimental that TWINE. Also it's full of iconic moments not just in the history of Bond films but in the history of cinema.

    • @sparky6086
      @sparky6086 3 года назад +3

      I believe, that "Dr No" should be cut a lot of slack, because the studio was just experimenting, with whether or not there was a signifigant audience for a James Bond film, so there wasn't much money or effort behind it. It was pretty much thought of as a "B" movie, as it was being made. After it was a hit, a little more money and effort was put into the next one, "From Russia with Love", so it was better, but they were still cautious with thier money and effort, just in case, "Dr No" was a fluke. Remember, in the early 1960's, many thought, that movies in general, were on their way out, because of the rising popularity of television, so it was a difficult time to attract investors. James Bond, as a franchise having proven itself with the first two movies, hit stride with "Goldfinger".
      Too bad, that Sean Connery lost interest and didn't do "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", then it would have been awesome. George Lazenby did okay and seemed to be catching on to acting, at times in that movie, so he may have grown into the role, if he continued, but of course, that was his only Bond film.

The story is fantastic and believable enough not to feel too over the top, the poker scenes are incredibly tense and the action scenes are so well shot, it still holds up brilliantly 15 years later. The little head tilts to classic James Bond tropes throughout the film like Bonds quip about not caring if the martini is shaken or stirred, Bond winning the keys to Aston Martin DB5 and finally the classic one liner, followed by the main score at the very end, served to satisfy older fans while breathing new life into the franchise, grounding it and delivering one of the greatest Bonds we’ve ever had.

    I will never understand the obsession with Skyfall. It has been a while since I have seen it, so maybe I need to give it another shake, but the only thing I remember agreeing on or really enjoying was the cinematography. I will sing it's praises there. The lighting and framing of scenes at the end in Scotland are really great. Otherwise, I just find it alright.
    I think after viewing my own opinion and revisiting the movies I think why Goldeneye is so high up is it is able to balance fun and seriousness. I think Skyfall is too dour and Bond should be fun or it is at it's best when it's fun. It does not need to devolve to silliness or camp which can be fun in it's own right, but Goldeneye works so well because it knows WHEN to be serious and when to enjoy itself. Also though other than the opening car scene music, which kind has grown on me, the music is great in Goldeneye, the end showdown theme between Alek and James gets me every time.

    What you said about Spectre and Quantum's continuity made me realize how well Fleming maintained continuity. Events in each story have a lasting effect on Bond but each adventure is still its own adventure. Even when dealing with SMERSH and SPECTRE each book's tale stands on their own.
    Sure the Craig continuity was just handled horribly but goes to show that the movies shouldn't focus on hardcore continuity, and if they want to do that they need to plan ahead. When I see the ending of CR I don't picture "Can't wait for Bond to continue hunting Quantum", I think "This adventure set up Bond for future stories".

    I love your videos, Calvin - I've no idea how many times I've watched this particular ranking video of yours. "The Spy Who Loved Me" is still at the top of my list and always has been. Part of it has to do with when I first saw the film (13 was probably THE best age for it) and a lot of it has to do with the production design and the music. Watching Ken Adam's magnificent Atlantis rise to the surface to the strains of that Mozart piano concerto was a revelation.

    My favorite Bond film is License to Kill, and that has not changed since it was released. It's funny. This very video, combined with the realisation that there's a Bond reviewer who not only shares my love for GoldenEye and my disdain for Spectre, but is also able to watch the first two Connery movies without nostalgia goggles, is what got my back into the Bond franchise. And now that I've spent the last months watching the entire series twice (first in chronilogical order, then in opposite order of my preliminary ranking), I'm thinking you're being too harsh on Dr. No and From Russia With Love. Maybe I'm getting old.

    • @necroplastful
      @necroplastful 5 лет назад +33

      Maybe but to be fair, the more I think about it, the more I fucking hate Spectre. I feel that Blofeld does not belong in modern Day bond and should remain a relic of the Cold War Bond films. Everything in Spectre seems so forced. In Quantum the shaky cam and the editing really fucked the action scenes quite a bit but in Spectre its the absolute opposite. The action scenes feel incredibly boring because they are way too polished, glossy and clean. I mean the italian car chase scene was incredibly boring... Nothing eventfull happens, I dont even remember anything of that scene. And there are way too many callbacks and what not. And I hate the fact that Craig has two of the absolute best bond movies and two of the worst. But coming back to it, Spectre is pretty darn bad. Yes the cinematography is impeccable but the stakes are not really all that thrilling when it almost completely negates the entire point of the previous three films. It felt really forced and neither Craig nor Waltz feels compelling. Waltz actually sucks ass in this film and we are talking about Christopher Waltz here... Blofeld should have been absolutely perfect for him but in the end it was pretty meh. I wasnt a fan of the whole "Welcome to my Underground Lair" feel as well. It feels soooooo fucking out of place and dated in 2015. Still is today, even more probably. I hope Bond 25 makes up for it cause honestly I seriously disliked Spectre and I actually in hindsight agree with the fact that its the worse on this list.

      He literally said he enjoyed all the train stuff. But the scenes on the Orient Express don't salvage the rest of the film, which , outside of some good performances that leave an impression, is ultimately a poorly-paced film that takes too long to get from one bit to the next. There's plenty of redeeming things about it, but ever since I watched it, I felt that same sort of disappointment that Calvin feels, where it's simply not as good a film as people make it out to be. I mean, let's not hide from the reality of it: It was *deliberately* designed to be more Hitchkockian, so much so that it's absolutely impossible not to notice it... but if I wanted to watch a Hitchkockian espionage thriller, then North by Northwest is objectively the better film in that regard by a large margin.
      FRwL's biggest problem is that Terence Young didn't do his own thing with it. Had he done so, I think FRwL could've turned out to be the film everyone likes to say it is. Still adore Matt Munro's theme, though.

    Part of what makes Skyfall so good is that the bad guy wins and it really hurt to see him win. That gut punch and the return to form at the end was spectacular.

    • @jon4715
      @jon4715 4 года назад +2

      That doesn't make it good. The villian is miserably awful, and his plot is among the most ridiculously convoluted in the series. The cinematography was spectacular, but that is all.

      That's not the reason why it's good. The reason it's good is because the movie was nicely scripted.

      @@TheGore1021 I loved the part of the script where Silva was climbing the ladder, but he also had a remote explosive planted under the underground train, and just as Bond was coming for him, Silva dropped a train that happened to be passing overhead right in front of Bond! Pretty amazing planning. Really gives the viewer a sense of wonder that few movies are able to accomplish, like: I wonder how any of this makes any sense in the world that this film has established.

    • @jon4715
      @jon4715 4 года назад

      @@user-yv4mm6bx3c I don't think so. Most Bond movies, and certainly most successful action movies, establish rules that the plot adheres to in order to create stakes. In Skyfall, things just happen as a matter of convenience without any establishment of possibility. What in Skyfall would lead us to believe that the tube train falling out of the ceiling at just that moment seems at all plausible? Nothing, and that lack of plausibility in Skyfall's established world is what really hurts the movie in hindsight or on closer inspection.

    My all-time favourite has not changed: “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” I saw this in New York City during the 1969 Christmas holidays, at the age of thirteen. George Lazenby not only was a refreshing change, breathing new life into the character, but remains my favourite Bond. Connery did a sleepwalk through two films, then returned looking like Lazenby’s father! (I’m happy he took that break.) But we went from ”OHMSS” to a succession of crap, not getting the Bond mojo back until “For Your Eyes Only.” Then, another run of mediocrity until “Licence To Kill.” Whatever career difficulties Lazenby endured, it may be a good thing that he didn’t stick around for what followed.

(Of course, having Peter Hunt as director was a great help!) Yes, better than Connery or Moore could do. He fit Ian Fleming’s conception of Bond better than anyone else.

      @@mercuryrising2424 I hope you’ll watch “Licence To Kill,” and then tell us what you think. It is different, showing a James Bond more human, more down-to-earth, who has to choose his loyalty to his best friend over his loyalty to M and the Secret Service. Timothy Dalton is at his best! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

      Yes, I think it's true. Moore was my first. Saw the helicopter scene from FYEE on TV at 10 years old, having no idea what it was. Was totally hooked and still think that intro is the most fun 5 minutes of Bond in film...unless you are Blofeld of course. 😉

    As far as Bond being against Melina getting revenge on Kristatoes in FYEO, Bond is a stone cold killer who shows no remorse when he kills and feels no pity (he wouldn't be good at his job if he did), he knew that Melina didn't have the mind set that he did and it would turn her into a person just like him if she avenged her parents (he was trying to save her from becoming an emotionless killer like himself). It's kind of similar to the dynamic between Bruce and Dick Grayson in Batman Forever.

    Daniel Craig will always be my favorite Bond, even the heavy flaws Quantum and Spectre suffer, I still think Craig puts on his best performance and it is amazing, the new personality he has brought to Bond made me love him instantly, Casino Royale will also always be my favorite in the series.
