I had the same one. If I recall, they were at Tiny Middle, and with my discount, they came to some paltry number like 20 bucks. At that price, it wasn't worth it not to have.
Mine died years ago, probably because I shredded too much stuff at once. I have the actual Fellowes shredder oil, as far as I know it's vegetable oil, specifically Canola. I burned through one bottle of the stuff and have a brand new one never opened. I just looked at it, still perfectly sealed, has a price tag of 10 bucks. I didn't pay no 10 bucks for it with my discount. They do sell lubricating sheets that you can shred also.
I was not able to open mine after it broke, I brought it to my dad, he was able to open it but it certainly wasn't easy. Found that the gears inside have stripped. And they are all plastic. So eventually they will crack and break, or strip if overfed.
I bought a Royal brand one after this, that one was better but not great. I tried to sell it at your garage sale years ago but nobody wanted it. I've tried to give it away but still nobody wants it.
I ended up buying another Fellowes, model B-121C, many years ago. It has small casters on the bottom that you have to install. Whilst installing them, a press fit, the plastic socket around where it inserts cracked and broke. I called them, they could not supply me with replacement parts and asked me to cut the cord off and discard it. They sent me a replacement unit. So I did just what they said, I left the cord intact and hot glued the caster in place. It's been fine since. That shredder far surpasses this one. I don't know if it has metal gears inside, but it uses an induction motor instead of a universal motor. Doesn't make those whining sounds when it runs, it just sort of hums along nicely. That one can take 12 sheets at a time if I recall, and paper moves through it way way faster. I have never, ever had a problem with that one. It's got a paper chaff "drawer" that comes out, so I don't have the take the top off, just slide it out of the machine and dump it.
I think I have the univeral motor from the original one in the garage somewhere. I found it a few weeks ago, still runs but it's pretty rusty and the bearings need oil. What I didn't like about the original was the basket. Looked nice, but the little holes in it actually are not a good thing. When the shredder shreds paper, you get those little pieces you see. What you don't see are the little fibers of the paper, on every single one of those little shreds, and that creates paper dust. Goes right out the holes in that basket.
Paper shredders always have a certain amount of time they can run, then have to wait until they cool down to run again, and they have overheat protection which it sounds like you've hit. The one I have now can go quite some time before overheating. So if it says 2 minutes on, remember that it's cumulative, that is to say, a typical piece of paper takes a few seconds to shred. Add all of those seconds over multiple shreds up, and after that amount of time, it should rest. I just keep going until the overheat protection kicks in. You'll hear it when it comes back live.
The basket from the old one lives on. I took my Dremel to the little metal tab inside the basket and cut it off and made it smooth, it now serves as a garbage can for the wif.
