The famous Flying Scotsman locomotive has two whistles - here they are in my hand at the National Railway Museum in York, UK while the locomotive is being overhauled.
Wow! A step-top! That's not very common in England, eh? The only chime whistles I've heard of are the A4 Crossby 3 chime flat-tops! I didn't know the Scotsman had a step-top! Those are more common here, in America, I know that for sure!
David Howard As a reply on ,,Yes that is fine by me. Let me know what you are doing!'', I want to make a big whistles and horns video. I'm sorry for I cannot tell you what it is about, I want to keep it a secret, ye know!
Chime whistles are SUPER common in the US, South America, Canada, China, Germany, Japan etc..
Thanks Petro. Good sound in that acoustic even from the "toy" whistle!
OI! THATS A SOUTH AFRICAN WHISTLE!!!! the SAS at the bottom stands for Suid Afrikaanse Spoorwee. the Afrikaans for South African Railways!
Imagine using these at a railroad crossing 😂😂 drivers will stop
Thanks - it is fun and I intend to put up some more videos!
2021 gang
I think chime whistles were much more common here in the 'States.
In America chime whistles are everywhere lol
Most locomotives in the states have chime whistles, I've seen up to 6 chimes on bigger locomotives.

/watch?v=ZQWKl6ozxXc Here's an example of two chimes. Tornado's and Sir Nigel Gresley's whistles are both A4 styles.
Good video. Thank You. Petro
Anyone know what happened to Flying Scotsman's American Equipment i.e the headlamp, cow catcher, and whistle?
I believe they are now in a private collection
I thought the chime whistle was from the US tour
I think the South African Chime? (It looks the same to RH&DR Black Prince) sounds better than the standard LNER whistle.
They would of had what’s known as bell whistles *laughs in stanier* stanier:”we use hooters”
thanks Good info on UK whistles USA ones are different as the locos only use one tone & that can be different on every line too
