There were once over 400 lime kiln's in Northumberland.
The Tosson Lime Kiln was originally designed for Lord Armstrong of Cragside in 1888 by local architect George Reavell from Alnwick. It has been restored fairly recently by Northumberland National Park Authority.
Limestone would have been transported from quarries and coal from local pits to be burned together at a high temperature. The resultant quicklime was used for agricultural improvement and to make mortar. The lime kiln was in operation up to the start of the Second World War when it was thought the glow from the kiln would attract enemy aircraft so was shut down.
Tosson is now the best preserved lime kiln in the national park, and a small car park and picnic area is provided for visitors. From here you can enjoy beautiful views of the Cheviot Hills.
Tosson Tower remains are also a short way away so i may visit on a future outing.

Hiya Suki 😃👋 yes beautiful colours in the distance on the hills, the sun creates amazing scenery 🏞️ Shame that kiln isn’t still working I’d be there for free heating 🤣 We have had a lot of rain, the ground can’t cope when it’s already saturated so it floods. Thank you for popping in 🤗 have a great weekend too and Happy Christmas 🎅🎄🤗👍🏻🎁🥰

Helloooo how are ya? Interesting things aren’t they these kilns… it’s really only because huge industrial sites took over what they were doing that they closed, it turned into an industry on a huge scale. Glad you enjoyed this one and the info always gives a better insight about what you’re watching. Have a great Christmas and take care 🧑‍🎄🎄🤗❤️

Greetings from Canada Ray! 🍁 Hope all is well with you. Another informative video on this bit of innovation. Amazing how deep that kiln is. As always, the surrounding countryside is stunning, as are the Cheviot Hills. They almost don’t look real, like they’re painted on. I especially loved the music you chose for this one. In case I don’t talk to you before the holidays, hope you and Alf have a pleasant, cozy Xmas and may 2024 bring only good things your way. Thank you so much for the gift of these beautiful videos that you bring us throughout the year. 🙏🇨🇦🇬🇧🎅🏻🎄🌟❄️☃️🍺🍻🥂🎉🎊🐈‍⬛🤗👋❤
