I am really loving Kazuo Ishiguro so far. I read three of his books last year: Klara, Never Let and Go and The Buried Giant and I want to read them all. I was so confused why there were only 7 in your rankings until you mentioned The Unconsoled being one you are saving. Do you plan to read the short story collection Nocturnes? I actually really liked The Buried Giant but in a really weird sort of way, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like it. Luckily I buddy read it because I feel like I would have got less out of it without my buddy reader who had read a lot of Ishiguro.
All the cats! 💛🐈‍⬛ 🐈 💛 So glad they are looking after Kazuo. 💛

I am not a short story fan so I will stick to just novels. But I do wonder if my current ranking will change with rereads over time? Either way it will be nice to have this video to compare my thoughts. Especially on the ones I didn't feel I "got". Ah the buddy read of Buried Giant with an experienced Kazuo reader sounds like the way to go, I would've got so much out of that! You started on all his genre books! Probably a smart move! Hope you continue to enjoy his others! 😁💜

@@charlottemolloy I had no intention of doing it that way, just read Klara first and had always wanted to read NLMG so that was next. I intended to read The Remains of the Day after that but couldn’t pass up The Buried Giant buddy read. I love the way all three are worlds apart but still have themes in common.

    My ranking so far is:
    1. Never Let Me Go
    2. The Remains of the Day
    3. When We Were Orphans
    4. Nocturnes
    5. Klara and the Sun
I haven't read his other books, but it's definitely my future plan. The first two are interchangeable, my favourite is different every day.
I put Nocturnes on this list as well, even though it's a short story collection. It was okay, though pretty forgettable. Klara is the only book of his that I disliked so much that it put me off Ishiguro for the time being.
Love the beach and your channrl overall (new subscriber here)😊.

The Buried Giant was also my first Ishiguro. I didn’t dislike it as much as most people seem to. As a widow, the couple’s devotion really effected me and I sobbed at the end.

Haha what a perfect timing as I've just started reading a bit of An Artist of The Floatjng World tonight. It'll be my 7th read of him. I liked or loved all his other books (except for the short story collection which I enjoyed to a certain extent but didn't really like). I particularly love his smooth, beautiful but humble, creepy and menacing but comforting prose. My favorite is still The Remains of The Day though. I just wanna hug the butler for some reason haha.

@@charlottemolloy oh and have you read The Fortnight in September by R.C.Sherriff? Mr. Ishiguro recommended that book and I greatly enjoyed it. If you like Ishiguro's writing style, you def should read that book because the writing is wonderful. The prose is pretty similar to Ishiguro's, silky smooth, gorgeous but humble and comforting.

The Unconsoled is my number one by quite a distance! We differ a little on some of the others:
    #2 Artist
    #3 Never let me go
    #4 Klara
    #5 Remains
    #6 When we were orphans
    #7 Pale View
    #8 Buried Giant

You putting artist 2nd makes me feel again like I'm missing something that everyone else is seeing!
And I'm shocked orphans is near the bottom for you!

@@charlottemolloy I wonder whether the Artist issue might depend a little on what order you read Artist and Remains. I read Artist first, so Remains firstly felt like a repeat of the same storyline with an added improbable romance element! I enjoyed the slightly rougher Artist and for me the tone suited the situation of a house in post war Japan better than post war England

Yeah his writing style for me is a big plus for his work. The stories sometimes repeat the same theme or some are slower/less developed than others, but what they all share is writing that is enjoyable and interesting to read 😁

I only read two Ishiguro novels. Your #1 and your #7, and I too, loved "When We Were Orphans", but I didn't like "The Buried Giant" at all (I kind of liked the premise, but it was such a drag to read.
