  • In Preparation for making the foam core wing, we will need fiberglass wing tube sockets to house the aluminum wing tubes. This video shows how those fiberglass socket tubes are made.
    This is one of several videos (Parts) that cover the complete wing build process: Use this list for quick reference:
    1. Cutting the cores
    2. Drilling the wing tube sockets
    3. Installing the wing tube sockets and false rib
    4. Sheeting the cores
    5. Making the lightening holes
    6. Leading/Trailing edge installation
    7. Cutting the servo pockets
    8. Making and Installing the root and tip caps (part One)
    9. Making and Installing the root and tip caps (part Two)
    10. Making the Ailerons (Part One)
    11. Making the Ailerons (Part Two)
    12. Robart Style Hinge hole drilling and Installation
    13. Installing Robart Style Pin Hinges
    14. Making and Installing the Carbon Fiber Aileron Linkage
    So, we have a lot to cover. I hope you enjoy the journey and pick up some tips.

    Hi Mike. I want to say thanks. Last night I saw this video and attempted on a carbon tube instead of aluminum mandrel. But it came out perfect. I used 10 inches of plastic rolled on the tube and it gave me perfect shim gap. The tube slides perfectly with no rocking. Keep doing great tutorial videos.

    Awesome! I really appreciated the how to. If I may ask what is your cloth weight?

    • @mikencrcf6018
      @mikencrcf6018  3 года назад

      Generally, I swap off between 6 oz. and 4 oz. Both will work fine. Obviously, the 4oz will clean out a bit better and end up a few grams lighter. The 6 oz. will be a bit stiffer. So, there are trade-offs but honestly, the differences are very small. I've even used 2 oz. in a pinch with success although it was a lot more flexible. However, I'm not sure how significant that is since the tube is ultimately locked firmly inside the foam wing with epoxy.
      If you are ordering fiberglass cloth, we will be using .75 oz. cloth on the wings and tail feathers later. I have used 1.4 oz. on the wings as a comparison. the 1.4 oz. handles much easier but again its heavier. I use the 1.4 oz. on all of the flying wing planes since its so much tougher.

      @mikencrcf6018  3 года назад

      I use .75oz cloth on the wings and 4 oz or 6 oz on the wing tube sockets. I see very little difference between 4 and 6. I use whatever I have. You will wipe all the epoxy out that you can.

    can i use the backing sheet that we get from the covering films to separate the wing tube and the glass guide?

    • @mikencrcf6018
      @mikencrcf6018  3 года назад +1

      I'm not sure about that. I'm guessing you're using Ultracote or one of the coverings that uses that waxy backing? Try a quick test with some epoxy. If it sticks you'll know the answer.
      Wax paper is so cheap here that I've never had to worry about that.
      I will add however that I have seen issues with some of the cheaper wax paper. It still comes out comes but it takes a bit more persuasion.

    Great video. although I do have a couple questions. approx how much epoxy do you mix per tube and how many wraps of fiberglass are you using?

    • @mysticsmokers3014
      @mysticsmokers3014 Год назад

      I use the West Systems epoxy with the pump system. I use one pump per tube. I dont know the exact amount but it looks like about 1/3 of that little 2oz cup.
      Dont worry about using too much (other than wasting of course) since you will wipe off any excess. Its very important to remove all the excess you can get out. You can't remove too much. It will still be extremely strong.
      I generally make three wraps with the glass. Some thicker glass could get away with two wraps.
      Three is my sweet spot though. The epoxy is where the wgt is. So, get all of it off you can.

    • @cforcht
      @cforcht Год назад

      @@mysticsmokers3014 thanks for that. I do have the west systems epoxy. So that makes it really simple. Any idea on how many wraps of fiberglass? I have some .75 which is too light. I have some 3.7 which is what I planned to use. I also have some 5.7 carbon as well but thought that was a little overkill. I am scratch building a 50cc Ultimate bipe, thanks again

    • @mikencrcf6018
      @mikencrcf6018  Год назад

      As stated above, I use three wraps generally. Thicker glass can get away with two. There's realy no pressure on these parts so dont get to heavy.

      @@mikencrcf6018 thanks for the reply. I watched the vid more than once. there was mention of wraps of the wax paper. However, no mention of the wraps of glass. In addition there is no mention of any prep on the tube prior to layup. Might not be needed on 1" aluminum tubes. I found that using smaller tubes such as 18mm carbon fiber in my case. a few coats of car wax on the tube makes removal of the tube easier. But other than the questions I had still an excellent video on how to make wing tubes. Thanks for sharing

      @cforcht
      You're right, after reviewing, I didn't specifically state three wraps on the glass.
      In my defense, its essentially the same width as the wax paper so one could reasonably assume the same number of wraps.
      Like I frequently say, "it's not rocket science". This is a "no load" part that simply acts to guide and contain the wing tube.
      Using CF tubes can get a bit more difficult depending on the surface condition of the tube. More dimpled tubed can get tricky. The resin actually shrinks a bit as it cures making the wraps tighter. It can make removal more difficult.
      You're right, wax does help in those cases.
      A good smooth aluminum tube needs no preparation.
      The Gnat project is basically a flying tractor. A CF tube wouldn't make sense for my flying style. I've bent several aluminum tubes with little to no wing damage at all.

      Mike great build! I have used gallons of west systems the 105/and 207. Instead of paper towel maybe a cheap plastic putty knife with a half cut (the diameter of your finished size tube) in the end would make faster cleaner removal of the epoxy as you are only wanting to wet the glass and remove air from the fiberglass. Your the master and I the mortal but thought it might help. By the way thank you for your willingness to share your passion with the masses. I know how much time videos and text can take. And FYI the putty knife can be used over and over as the epoxy will not bind to it. Just let it dry hard flew the knife it will pop right off
