- Led by Thomas LeDet (TCU), and Harris Sebastian (UH), the Mighty Jack Yates Lions complete an epic underdog comeback against Winston Churchill High and their highly heralded quarterback Cody Carlson (BU) from San Antonio, who later became the backup quarterback for Warren Moon and the Houston Oilers. With this UIL semi-finals victory in Rice Stadium, the 1981 Yates Lions became the first all black high school football team since integration to advance to the Texas UIL 5A high school football finals, representing the city of Houston and its historic Third Ward community.
Was 42 years ago today. Craziest game i ever saw. Churchill jumped on them quick. Yates came back then took the lead and then the Charges came back to tie . Then Yates scored late after a 4th and long. Watching warm ups before the game I thought Yates would kill them. Churchill had offensive lineman 165 lbs to 190 lbs and Yates D line had boys 255 and 265 with 225 LBs. On Defense Churchill had a couple of 225 pound D lineman but Yates O line was 225 to 255 larger than most college teams at the time. Churchill safeties looked 5' 6" and Yates WRs were 6' 1" and fast. QB Cody Carlson wasnt able to throw the ball that much due to the constant pressure but they scored running the ball against the bigger faster Lions defense. Best HS game ever.
Oh My, Jesus! I have wanted to see this game my whole life. I was still in Jr. High & wasn't even at Yates yet when this happened. Thank you for uploading. Thomas Ledet.🥇
Huge crowd that night upwards of 40,000.
wow this is great
Smash mouth football. Running dives into the line of scrimmage. Got to get back to this type of football at some point.
I think Yates threw five ints against Lake Highlands the following week. LH coach said he couldn't understand why Yates didn't just run it. They couldn't have stopped them.
Churchill's QB is future Baylor Bear and Houston Oilers Cody Carlson.
Which is why it says so in the description above.
@@bradtaylor4765you mean the post put up 22 months after mine? Thanks for being so on the ball.
@@bradtaylor4765 i didnt see it either, churchill had a kid named Lammers who went on to A & M
Yates should have been state champs in '81-'83 got it '85 and '92
Losing Oscar Smallwood to injury for that state game in 92 was what lost it for Yates that year.
@@Papa1472008solid team in 84. 10-2 with both losses to Madison.
