I was at university in York in the 90's and loved the place. Lived off Huntington Road for a couple of years - almost every week a house was broken into, but thankfully we were not affected. In my final year we lived off Haxby Road, (Scaife Street) in a small, three story terrace, which had not been decorated or had much work since the 70s. We were the first tenants not to have a break in in over 10 years!
There were areas and pubs the university told us to avoid at all costs. Walking along Eldon Terrace was known as 'running the gauntlet'. We had a charity sports social one evening where women's teams dressed as men and we dressed in drag. I was chased along Eldon Terrace in a mini skirt and heels. I laughed about it when I got to the bar, but later heard that a couple of lads were seriously beaten up by a group of youths on the road.

I have walked past those 3 blocks of council flats in Clifton North loads of times, and I had no idea that was a ‘bad’ area, they are at the end of a really lovely tree lined road of really nice big houses, There is a reason houses around there cost 350k, because its not really that bad. So often we can focus our concentration with the criminals and neglect the victims.
During my many years visiting York I have seen declining health physical and mental of some particular residence of Sirocco Court off Montrose Avenue.
These same residents have little Hope of escape as its almost impossible to move, again lack of empathy and listening from York city council.
( BEFORE I START THIS IS IN NO WAY ABOUT THE PEACEFUL HASHES SMOKER, GOD BE WITH YOU AND PEACE BE WITH YOU )
Particularly over the past year, inside this year 2023 some residence have had to put up with threats ie..fear of walking out to communal entrance to go about their day, hanging out window threats to residence and near neighbours, fighting shouting drunken and heavy drug extreme violent behaviour, Heroin addicts and prostitutes all coming into flats at all hours even have the drunks and druggys in middle of the moring in the dead of night climbing up the walls using people's bedroom windows to help the climb into the druggy flat, constant slamming of doors, the sleep deprivation is a big concern the depression that these good people have to suffer and the isolation and sheer fear it causes I'm worried it will tip somebody over the edge. It doest stop there, they have to live with all this in very cramped damp conditions the floors beneath them caving into the earth underneath which was build over a fever hospital over very soft damp earth still infectious to this day, the whole block slowly sinking and falling apart inside, its dickensian conditions in 2023 is the reality.
If theirs any council official and police reading PLEASE PLEASE DO SOMETHING BEFORE THESE PEOPLE TIP SOMEBODY OVER THE EDGE.
You don't need to dig deep just visit ask the residence of Sirocco Court before its too late.
Indeed some of these cowards will know who I am and that's great I will help fight your corner, again if theirs any council official with any ounce of empathy or police please contact me.
On a last note, if you was police or council and you are good enough to visit please don't think because you don't see anything all is great for one its winter its mainly indoors , your see different in better weather its all over the block inside and out giving little peace to the good.
Plus these degenerates do know what a police car looks like outside.

Compared to other cities in the UK, York has absolutely no problems. It hasn't. It's really safe. I've worked in Doncaster, Hull, London and pit villages. Saying York is rough is like saying riding in a roller is bumpy and uncomortable. York is very safe. Thats why its so expensive to live there. Theres no excess housing to put people in, all social housing is full with working people. I grew up in Foxwood when it was apparently a lot worse than it was today. The area you showed as Foxwood was different area. York is a mint and very safe to live.

Aggressive youths grow up then move away so I wouldn’t let that put me off. In fact where I moved to years ago when I walked down this alleyway and kids were setting fire to garages they would regularly shout abuse as I walked past and I would say it’s lucky for you you’re under 16 so I can’t knock you into the middle of next week. They have all moved away and it’s reasonably quiet now. The garages are still a mess though.

I find youths more annoying than aggressive or destructive adults to be honest, for the reason that you can’t confront them without it escalating though their family, they have more time on their hands, and the police have very limited powers. But you’re right, they do move on eventually.
