World's Longest G Scale Train with (1) locomotive!

- This is the Longest G Scale Train on RUclips! This incredible 152 car train is being pulled by (1) single USA Trains Big Boy locomotive. On the third segment of this video, we swapped out the (1) USA Trains Big Boy for (6) Aristo-Craft Dash 9's. (2) Dash 9's probably could have pulled the train, but (6) locomotives looks much more impressive.
Every car in this train has had the plastic wheels changed out to metal rolling bearing wheels and axles. And the funky LGB couplers were changed out to body mounted Kadee couplers. These (2) items alone almost doubled the wieght of each car. Had we kept the plastic wheels and LGB couplers on each car, it would have been alot easier to pull the 152 cars. But it would have been a lot more unrealistic too!
Both the Big Boy and the Dash 9's are being powered by online batteries and they are being remote controled using AirWire. AirWire is the greatest remote controlled software out there. It does so many things!
We feel the Big Boy could have pulled more than the 152 cars you see here, but some of the couplers kept failing. The preasure of 406 pounds on the first 20 cars is tremendous! It took us (9) takes just to get these (3) video segments because of the coupler problems. If we could solve the coupler problem, I really think the Big Boy could be pulling close to 200 cars all by itself! So we will work on that for a future pull.
The Palo Verde and Southwestern RR really lends itself to pulling these long trains. We have extremely long straight-a-ways (there is (1) straight-a-way @ 297 feet and another one @ 274 feet), all of our curved track has 20' diameter curves or greater, and, all of our curved track is super elevated. So pulling long trains around the layout is very smooth.
We hope you enjoy this video that we made!
Thanks for watching!

"Hotbox detected. Axle 6-0-1."
Better start walking boys.....
lol
I feel sorry for the G scale car that got stopped at the railroad crossing.
+tryithere Yeah, that would be a case for back up and head for the nearest bridge or underpass instead if you can XD
tryithere did he die
ZeldaTheSwordsman or get one of the giant humans standing nearby to pick you up and put you on the otherside.
Ok, that truly made me "LOL". Thx for the humor!
that big boy is an absolute monster of a locomotive
You need to let some local gangs spray paint some of the cars
I like the way you think lol
X-42
If your calling them losers then tell us what are you doing with your life.
It's EMU 83 model trains are clearly for winners
okay so tell me its emu 83 being a winner at what.
Absolutely incredible... I would love to see and overhead view of the whole layout!
a g scale big boy? that might require a bit of saving!
$4500 dollars sheesh, not to mention the space required for the large turn radio. Can't even run it inside the house for fun because of the hallway turns.
Wish I Could See This Live!!!! I Love It
It's amazing that the straightening forces don't pull (stringlining) the wheels off the inner rail on the curve. The single locomotive must have good traction on its wheels - are the lined with rubber?
One of the greatest works of CRAFT and WORKMANSHIP I have ever seen. It really is art, beautiful work.
If this were a charity, I would now be writing a check to support the work so that more and more people could enjoy it!
I could watch that all day long.
A Big Boy is technically 2 engines with one cab. Mallets were designed so that only one crew needed to be paid, but criticism aside, I love your train, and I thank you so much for showing us.
Now I've seen some pretty shitty ways to blow $100 grand. THIS ain't one of them. Very cool indeed.
This must be on a huge property, aa great video indeed. Would love to hear about the total Layout.
During my early years with Santa Fe Railway in 1946 as an Engineer on the old Baldwin Steamers, the most I've put behind an old 2-10-10-2 Baldwin Steamer was 120 loaded coal cars thru Cajon Pass. In real life Steamers were never pushed that far, with Steamers it's not the horsepower, it's huge amount of torque Steamers rearly stall out, they just spin out and it takes a lot of sand to get them going again. I remember th old Big Boys. I love the layout, I enjoyed watching.
This is beyond belief! Just watching this video, my son is going crazy. He loves trains and little does he know (he's 2 and a half right now) that tomorrow he's getting a G-Scale train from Santa! I'm about to go upstairs and put it together around the tree. Anyway, this is an amazing video of an absolutely astounding train. I mean, the fact that you have 152 cars and accessories to make the train is one thing but you have the track for it too! Congratulations and Happy Holidays to everyone.
406lbs and didn't look to be struggling to move that weight at all. Pair of these could probably pull a car out of the snow! lol really awesome.
Truly a thing of beauty, Dennis. Thanks for posting it.
I’m amazed by the effort and skill it takes for projects like this, right down to the scenery. Well done.
i have to admit this is very awsome i have been in g scales for a while now and seing this has made me a firm believer in the g scale era
this layout is some serious money
The whole video is great but the Big Boy pulling this train unassisted is the greatest part in opinion. Well done friend
Big Boys were in fact designed to not have to use assistance, and trains of over 100 cars was the norm. I lived back east at the time, but I remember seeing a Y-6b 2-8-8-2 pulling a long train loaded with steel up a long grade, actually peeling off the top of the rails when the wheels slipped. But with sand, it made it with no other engines.
Thanks for posting this for all of us train buffs to enjoy. Incredibly layout!
What good is haveing a hobby and not enjoying it? Im also sure that the fun you must have is priceless, thats what its all about. Thanks for shareing and great video!
Love that UP/SP consist!
I love it and so fitting it would be a Big Boy since the original size ones were reported to be able to haul a mile long of cars at 55mph.
I love it so much. I can't believe how strong the Big Boy is, and that it could take off like that! I also like the engine swap. Greatest model train video ever, now I want to see this railroad even more.
Great inspiration for us outdoor enthusiast to run long trains on layouts that can handle it. We are attempting to run a 1 mile long Lionel train (three rail) on an outdoor layout this April and have had several "Run-Days" to prepare for it with much of the same issues you have indicate with your 1-Gauge. You indicated that that the metal wheels and rolling bearings added much weight... I believe the lower center of gravity with the heavy wheels helped your run. Good Show!
SOOOOO COOL! This video has rekindled my desire to have a model railway
Yes! Thanks. Beautiful setup you have by the way. As of right now I have to be content with my N scale.
A lot of work went in to that layout. It was fun watching your video. Thanks.
This is beyond stunning.
I won't sleep tonight, I'll be dreaming of cars, cars and more cars. Awesome!
Awesome job Dennis. Speed is very prototypical and the layout is great. Thanks for sharing.
You have a beautiful layout. And such trains are why the Big Boys were built.
Simply Awesome !
That's incredible
I live in Cheyenne Wyoming and I have visited the Big Boy that is being restored, twice now. It is really Big, not just big but REALLY Big.
You've done a fantastic job putting this together Dennis. Simply Awesome!. :)
The prototype Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy locomotives were designed to pull 3600 ton trains, unassisted, over the 1.14% grade of the Wahsatch Range between Ogden, Utah, and Green River, Wyoming, with substantial savings in expense. The specific tonnage for any given train varied from as low as 3,400 tons to as much as 4,000 tons (an average of 45 to 55 loads with 10 to 20 empties).
This video shows how powerful the big boy can be :)
Yes but I’ll stick to my flying Scotsman :)
Yes, video text said "slowly accelerating" but then you see the locomotive get speed instantly.
I wouldn't wanna be sitting at a grade crossing when that puppy comes along. I like how the Big Boy is #4014, though. A portent of things to come....
WOW BIG BOY IS A BEAST!!!!
+YUNG DUCK Indeed. That was the reason they were built - to be tremendous, powerful things that could haul the heaviest of heavy freights over a steep mountain route. And then haul butt in order to make good time.
This is unbelievable. Wow!!!!!!
Amazing, that train goes on forever it seems. I have a small collection of G scale equipment, and it takes lots of space to store it. I can't imagine storing away a train like this!
I'm so glad for him that this got recorded before he passed. Wish I had meet the man.
wow nice job,,did big boys pull trains like that years ago,,thanks for sharing
Wow, I really like this! This is a nice garden layout! Great work!
Didn't I read about this in the g scale magazine several years ago? It is beautiful. I worked for The Great Train Store in the Atlanta area. I determined that the passenger cars on the overhead track had traveled 13,300 miles up to that point. The wheel flanges were worn down to a razor sharp point.
Outstanding!
The UP Big Boy has been up and running for a couple of years. It does what it was designed to do. Long freight trains over steep grades at high speed. ALCO at its fines.
Pulling train cars...Like A Boss.
Spectacular!!
Lots of work, great job.
Very very impressive, given the size and cost of those G-scale beasts....it's just a whole other world from, say, HO, which has been my old gauge from the beginning.
If there is a garden in my future and enough money....this could get bad in a hurry :-)
Thank you for showing us this, really something.
That's impressive. Most impressive.
Quite impressive!
To have that much space and so many G size trains..Would clasify as a dream layout...
Dennis !!!! Great just great. Hope all is good out there !!!! and the pipe load train ???? Best Bill
I have to say I love your setup, with the painted walls and rock work and everything. Very nice!
+manicmarauder THANKS!
+dennissirrine I would like to know have you added any signals to your layout to make it realistic?
Just great!
I got only one word. SWEET!! Now thats got to be the cats ass of all the layouts I have ever seen. Well done!
Insane! U must be on the world records.
Brilliant.
Oh wow! This is soooo cool!
Very nice. A lot of hard work on that layout. 4014 is always an amazing engine. Would like to have seen those 6 diesels more closely and longer clips.
It looks very life-like!
That's one awesome layout!
Dennis, congrats on a great vid of some fantastic equipment AND a very nice layout.
Heck, just to get 152 cars in one place at one time is a huge accomplishment IMO, never mind having them pulled by one loco....even if it IS a Big Boy !!!
I am impressed, WOW!!!
Well done very impressive stuff . Big boy polled awesome.
Incredible!
I have no idea why this is so cool, but this is so cool.
I am speechless that was so amazing! WOW how on earth do you store everything? It must take a few hours to uncouple and move inside or where ever you store them. I am so impressed! Thank you that was some of the best entertainment I have had in a long time~
WOW! Now i want one too.
I'd be even more impressed if those cars were all fully loaded! lol
Still, mighty impressive.
Most impressive!
Fantastic railroad, great work and thanks for sharing!
Wow, thats one nice train!
AWESOME!!! I counted 1 engine, 151 cars and 1 caboose. Keep up the good work.
Awesome!!
No wonder it can pull 152 cars, they're all empties! LOL! Very cool!
dude, best train video ever! thumbs up for u
I love this video. Very impressive.
At 2.30 I was starting to think this was a looped video. It just goes on!
Wow thats crazy!
my six year old loves trains! He is so amazed by this!!!
Impressive. I didn't know a single G scale locomotive could pull that much weight. Dang.
man what a powerfull beast! i love it!
I would love to have a setup like this. This video was awesome!!!!!!
Big Boy does a great job!
Fantastic film. Loved every minute of it. Regards John
Awesome
Wow that's great
Intriguing ...... very nice display. I am certain that it takes a lot of space to negotiate this set up as well in the same these trains. Thank you for your prompt reply.
Hoe much voltage is engine drawing? Are powering track or are you battery?
Wow! Thanks for sharing! Did I see some reading, northern and blue mountain rr coal hoppers??
Considering if I recall the price of that loco somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000-$5,000 when released{and no longer available}. Not to mention the rolling stock can be anywhere from $60-$300 each. Add in the changes made and it does get expen$ive! So you're probably right, a 2nd mortgage may be needed for a train of that size! Definitely impressive pull.
hey dennissirrine great video by the way I love the big boy steam train that you featured in this video by the way thanks for uploading this video thanks
