    This is a car from an era when premium and luxury meant quality and durability, not electronic gizmos. Today's Mercedes cars have hundreds of features that owners mostly never use and make them a huge headache to own. A family friend bought a brand new one last year and it's already been multiple times in the shop with the check engine light on. They're money pits now.
    Back then, in the 80s and 90s, Mercedes, Volvo, BMW and other brands built tanks. Cars built to last, to take you anywhere in comfort and safety. Now, the reliability of most car brands has gone to crap. Even Honda has engine failures these days. Sad times for cars.

      Protector...My first MB was a 93 300E and it was the most dependable of the 4 that I owned, until it hit around 2003 and 120k miles. Electronics began to be an issue --- headlights, cruise, A/C, pw, all began to fail. Worst was the 03 E500...Problems from almost day 1. Fortunately, they were repaired/replaced under warranty (all 4 struts (!), radio, fuel tank, center console trim and rear ash tray doors --- over $15k in warranty work in the first 3 years)! Unloaded it after warranty period ended.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 5 лет назад +2

      @@ISUringman1974 I owned a 1987 300E that I bought used with 105k miles. The materials and build quality was truly impressive. I had similar experience with reliability. The transmission started slipping badly around 108k miles. Everything electrically controlled started failing. Dead radio. Half the buttons in the interior quit working. Cruise control module died. I sold it to a neighbor a few months later. I was very disappointed with the reliability. I switched to an old Volvos and never looked back. Materials quality was definitely lower, but holy cow they were so much more comfortable and reliability made the MB look like a total turd in hindsight.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 5 лет назад +1

      Ironically, the electronic gizmos this era of MB had were failure prone. This era of MB usually starting having all sorts of problems once they turned the 100k mile mark. The engines and build quality were the great aspects. Everything else like electrical, transmission, were frankly crap. Transmission rebuilds and numerous electrical failures before 150k was the norm.

      @@palebeachbum I bought mine '89 with almost same mileage (178 tkm), now have about 450 tkm! Everything work perfectly except lambda sensor is need to be replaced, but I use LPG, no big problem. No electrical problems. Spark cables are replaced only once, and I swap totally functional transmission for newer one because of little noisy pump (at 260 tkm). Very reliable and durable car with still impressive ride if it is all in order. Think that maybe your 300E is not properly maintained. On our streets there is lots of W124 in use.
      Frequently drove company 740 GLE for almost year, but my friends is more pleased with 300E, although even more with old W108 280 SE!

    The 80-early 90s are the times Mercedes made their cars really worth the price. Durable and easy to maintain and repair. You did not respond, but this video tells me you and I are basically on the same page when it comes to the W126 Mercedes Benz. I currently own a 1991 560 SEL, which I bought with 27'000 miles for over 30k looking brand new, and still does. I know that was a lot of money, but they are my absolute favorite cars of all time, especially these American Versions with those big bumpers. I remember my dad behind the wheel of our brand new 1962 Plymouth Valiant wagon. I thought we were really in the 60's, the future! One bullet proof automobile. Nobody wanted a "foreign car".

    I've always loved the S-Class Mercedes from that era. They're classy, dependable, sturdy and safe. It's probably why I like the Chrysler 300, I have a couple of them and I rebuild them, the 2005 and up remind me of the S-Class. I think I'll find a 500 SEL to slip in there and restore for myself!

    this is so true years ago(late 80's) we went to Greece on Holiday and all the taxi drivers drove were Mercedes diesel's. We found a driver that spoke good English and he explained that they were so solid that they were just getting broken in at 200k! made complete sense. When I worked in the car business, this could no longer be said about Mercedes! most of the owners I spoke with couldn't wait to get rid of their cars! expensive oil changes and quirky problems that even the dealers often couldn't fix! I worked on a Toyota lot for 5 plus years and most of these owners were trying to get into a Toyota with low cost of ownership.

    My uncle and aunt had one before. One of their kids and uncle both agree getting rid of it somewhere along the line was a dumb decision. They just got a Nissan leaf used and can barely get around on a charge. Since I've talked about importing older cars to sell, my uncle thinks of getting into it now as well since good cars are turning 30 years old now and can easily be registered without having to pay a huge fee due to the age. I'd like to see him actually get into it as well and perhaps buy a mercedes like this that they had before.

    My Dad owned a W126 300 SD Turbodiesel and a 560SEL. Built as tanks, super-reliable and each had 500,000 miles when he sold them. They were trouble-free the entire time he owned them and not a single recall. I drove them, as I had just gotten my driver license then, nothing drove like these cars at the time. They were so advanced and even by today's standards. Unfortunately M-B has lost its way and makes unreliable junk today.

      @@dariodjakovic1600 335000 now. 40mpgs, almost 400lb/tq and the 800 miles fuel stops. I’m convinced it’s the best sedan ever made, that is affordable. Expensive parts suck but it’s all worth it 👍🏼

    It's quite simple: Mercedes took a dive halfway through 1992 with "Modellpflege 2" (aka "MOPF 2"). So the rule of thumb is simple: You can buy every Mercedes built before summer '92 basically with your eyes closed. Well, check for rust of course.

    This 3.5 liter diesel was not known to be Mercedes best design. Many of them had connecting rod bending issues that required a short block replacement or a complete crate rebuilt motor. I had one of these in a 140 chasis car....$19,000 worth of warranty work done on that car
